The Ongoing Legacy of Wendy Bishop Is In Our Stories: a Review of The Subject is Story: Essays for Writers and Readers, Edited by Wendy Bishop and Hans Ostrom
Will Hochman , Southern Connecticut State University To review The Subject is Story: Essays for Writers and Readers edited by Wendy Bishop and Hans Ostrom in this time and place, one must be a "Dupie Warrior" (Bob Marley was one) or a ghost fighter (as most of us are at one time or another). How much is gained and lost when one of our field’s key players writes and dies? What can any review of any book ever truly say about a writer’s spirit, and isn’t that what really matters now? I teach my students not to address sources by their first names unless they are personal friends. Wendy’s bibliography makes certain she will be a source in our field for a long time to come. This book (her penultimate publication during her lifetime) is a good trail marker for any teacher and writer to leave behind. Within the creative space that Wendy herself might encourage, The Subject is Story is a haunting message from our lost colleague asking us to consider ongoing crossover guidance from Ostrom and a cohort of compositionists who provide much of the necessary theoretical and practical insights that students and teachers need to tell their stories in their academic writing.

Many of the hallmarks resemble those of a strong graduate program, but the undergraduate hallmarks differ from the graduate hallmarks especially in regard to curriculum. For undergraduate writers, a good four-year curriculum requires more general studies of literature, the arts and sciences, and the fine arts; it also provides extracurricular experiences in writing, publishing, and literature. Whereas a Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing places equal emphasis on the practice of craft and on the study of literature, an undergraduate program places a stronger emphasis on the study of literature. To help institutions structure and focus their self-evaluations, long-range plans, or independent assessments of their programs, the AWP Board of Directors has established the following hallmarks.

Because there are many paths by which one may become a writer, the curricula varies from program to program. AWP encourages this variety and innovation while it sets general guidelines to help ensure a high quality of artistic literary training within these programs. Although the courses of study vary, AWP has noted the following shared characteristics among successful programs that nurture a culture of creativity, vitality, intellectual rigor, artistic discipline, and collegiality. These definitive hallmarks also form the basis for The AWP Guidelines for Creative Writing Programs.

Postgraduate Research Supervision in Creative Writing
The Ph.D. in Creative Writing offers students two areas in which to develop their expertise. On the one hand it is an opportunity to produce a substantial piece of creative work: a novel, or a collection of poetry, a play or screenplay. On the other, you are required to produce an accompanying thesis; and this should find a novel way of reflecting the themes explored in its creative aspect. It is therefore a hybrid work, requiring both literary skill and critical judgement; and a successful Ph.D. must be a carefully balanced production. A Creative Writing Ph.D. is distinguished from the purely literary thesis by its bias in favour of creativity. Both in proportion and in emphasis, the Ph.D. is weighted towards its creative component. Whether the proportions are 70:30 or 60:40 is for the individual student and supervisor to establish. This goes to the essential function of Creative Writing as a pedagogic discipline, which is to further the creativity of the student. Your Ph.D. will be a type of dialogue between two discourses. One, the creative, must be at liberty to pursue its own agendas and methodologies without circumscription. It is not obliged to 'answer' to literary theory, but it may well be profoundly shaped by it. The other, the academic, must be as responsible to its own disciplines, but it should also acknowledge the unique nature of its endeavour. That is, it must present itself in the forms of essays, interviews, and analysis, accompanied by proper footnotes, indices, and bibliographies. But, because you are critiquing some aspect of your own creative practice, the accompanying thesis must be as creative in its responses to that practice as possible. It can therefore have access to more personal forms of account, including the creative journal or the autobiographical essay, although these are to be as rigorously annotated as the other critical forms deployed.

The sociology of Creative Writing
By chance - though not choice - I read outlines of sociological theories: Marx, Talcott Parsons, Erving Goffman, Durkheim. I winced at the accompanying terminology: anomie dysfunction and (my anti-favourite) normative . However, I was particularly intrigued by Goffman’s observations in Asylums ; something about how people placed in an institution develop strategies for gaining privacy and distance by adopting behaviours in accordance with their surroundings. (I’m summarising a summary from a poor memory, so please forgive misrepresentation). Anyway, it provoked a return to my daydream of joining an academy-based creative writing group. A common wish among writers, it seems. What is this all about? Perhaps the wish for a community where none can exist. So how much has this to do, despite the protests about Creative Writing’s contribution to modern literature, with a loss of trust? Perhaps this daydream is my strategy. Related Postings
