Prior to 1925:
Creation Science was the prevailing belief system before the rise of geology in the late 18th Century. The early European scientists, from Copernicus to Galileo to Newton believed (as did almost all Christians in their time) in a literal interpretation of the Bible's account of creation. Historians have made m any estimates for the date of creation , including 3761, 3928, 4004, and 4456 BCE. The most generally accepted date was by Bishop Ussher: 4004-OCT-22 BCE Belief in Usher's date continued among Christian scientists, until the early 18th century, when it became obvious to most researchers that geological processes were exceedingly slow, and must have been accomplished over incredibly long periods of time. A 6000 year old earth was not possible. As geologists promoted theories which indicated that the earth's age predated the Biblical creation story, opposition arose in many religious organizations. For example, Ellen G. White, an early prophet of the Seventh-day Adventists, reacted to the debate about the fossil record of past species by stating that they were deposited by the flood. Friction between science and theology increased when Darwin published The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) and The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex

The Evolution Controversy The issue: What restrictions does the First Amendment place on the ability of states and school boards to restrict the teaching of evolution or encourage the teaching of "creation science" in the public school classrooms? Introduction Conflict between science and religion began well before Charles Darwin published Origin of the Species . The most famous early controversy was the trial of Galileo in 1633 for publishing Dialogue , a book that supported the Copernicun theory that the earth revolved around the sun, rather thanas the Bible suggests the other way around.
The so-called "Scopes Monkey Trial" of 1925 , concerning enforcement of a Tennessee statute that prohibited teaching the theory of evolution in public school classrooms, was a fascinating courtroom drama featuring Clarence Darrow dueling with three-time presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan. However entertaining the trial in Dayton, Tennessee was, it did not resolve the question of whether the First Amendment permitted states to ban teaching of a theory that contradicted religious beliefs. Not until 1968 did the Supreme Court rule in Epperson vs. Arkansas

Here's how
the magazine Punch saw the evolution revolution. Can science conquer Kansas? UPDATED 21 FEB 2001: Evolution is back in Kansas, where the state board of education reversed a 1999 decision that made teaching evolution by natural selection optional. Charles Darwin may sleep better or evolve into a frog for all we know to hear that the board, by a 7-3 vote, essentially required the teaching of evolution, much to the despair of creationists but the delight of scientists. The vote reflected electoral repudiation of board members who opposed teaching of the theory, a bedrock of biology. Two other fundamental scientific theories, cosmology (the origin and fate of the universe), and plate tectonics (the movement of vast chunks of the Earth), were also restored to the classroom. POSTED 27 SEP 1999 On Aug. 11, the Kansas State Board of Education fired another salvo in the long battle between religion and science by removing evolution from the high school curriculum.
