However, the parental-child bond is considered one of the most guarded bonds under the law, and it may be very difficult and expensive to terminate parental rights through a court order. The court may need to determine that the absence biological parent is truly unknown, or unfit, and that it is in the best interest of the child to be adopted. Consent is by far the easiest and least expensive method to obtain the adoption. LEGAL ASSISTANCE: Clients eligible for services at the First District Legal Office may have all their court filings prepared by a legal assistance attorney if: 1) it is an uncontested stepparent adoption; 2) the adopting stepparent will file In Pro Per; and 3) the biological parent will consent to the adoption. The purpose of this site is to be a reference for working lawyers and students in the field of criminal law in New South Wales, Australia, about recent cases in the areas of criminal law and evidence, and to assist in public discussion and education about important issues which have practical importance for many people. The inspiration of the site was the fact that although criminal lawyers in Australia are pretty well served for primary materials (statutes and cases) there is very little by way of analysis on the Internet. Many of the Australian cases I have referred to can be found at Austlii. Although I have tried to keep this site as up to date as possible, obviously anyone using it should rely on their own enquiries. In other words, no-one involved with the site has legal liability for damages for any decisions you may decide to make based on material on this web site. The text of the Criminal Law Survival Kit is in two large documents, one on Crime and one on Evidence. At this stage I want to keep it that way to make searching easier. If you are having trouble searching either part, remember to make sure that the document has finished downloading onto your computer before you search. Hopefully most of the abbreviations should be obvious but the reference to 'PD' is the Public Defender's Recent Cases published in New South Wales Australia. In July 1998 in Rome, 120 Member States of the United Nations adopted a treaty to establish -
for the first time in the history of the world - a permanent international criminal court. This treaty entered into force on 1 July 2002, sixty days after sixty States have become parties to the Statute through ratification or accession. "The long-held dream of a permanent International Criminal Court is nearing reality," United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said recently. "Our hope is that, by punishing the guilty, the ICC will bring some comfort to the surviving victims and to the communities that have been targeted. More important, we hope it will deter future war criminals, and bring nearer the day when no ruler, no State, no junta and no army anywhere will be able to abuse human rights with impunity." This fact sheet addresses some of the common questions about the Court.
