101. BOB WILLS WESTERN SWING
Wills created a new art form called western swing, and for over four decades influenced American popular music in general, and country and western music in particular.

BOB WILLS
(born March 6, 1905, Moss Springs Community,
Kosse, Texas; died May 13, 1975, Fort Worth, Texas) H e created a new art form called western swing and for over four decades influenced American popular music in general and country and western in particular. Reared in poverty among unlettered white and black musicians who expressed their deepest emotions in music, he learned to perform and compose from his heart and soul. Like those musicians, he was concerned more with musical feeling than with musical propriety. This folk environment contributed to Wills' uninhibited, free, experimental, and often radical approach to music that put him years ahead of his time. Just how far ahead he really was is evident in the fact that his music appealed to both the age of jazz and swing era and continues to be popular in these times of rock and country and western. Bob Wills began his career as a fiddler in 1915 and ended it at a recording session for United Artist fifty-eight years later, in 1973. He made his first record in 1929 and his last forty-four years later. His total output in that period was over five hundred and fifty recordings.

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 9 items Country-and-Western Music or Country Music , a style of United States popular music rooted in southern traditional music (derived mainly from the folk music of Britain and Ireland) and influenced by other popular music styles. In the 1920s the new recording industry used the label hillbilly for records aimed at southern, rural, white audiences. Regional musicians such as the Carter family (most active from 1927 to 1943) recorded old ballads and sentimental songs, using traditional southern-mountain vocal techniques and instrumentation; the more blues - and western-oriented Jimmie Rodgers introduced yodels. Radio helped diffuse the music, culminating in 1939, when the Grand Ole Opry show began to be broadcast nationally in the United States. In the 1930s two new substyles developed. Western swing blended elements of blues, jazz , and mainstream popular music and instrumentation (notably saxophones and drums) with the traditional fiddle-based string bands. The related honky-tonk style, using small electrified bands, flourished in rural Texas and Oklahoma taverns, while another regional variation

Read More: Terrorism Donald Rumsfeld as announced a, well, odd memorial , a tonedeaf commemoration, a tasteless tribute planned for the Pentagon the fourth anniversary of 9/11. Says the NY Daily News:
The Pentagon will hold a massive march and country music concert to mark the fourth anniversary of 9/11, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said in an unusual announcement tucked into an Iraq war briefing yesterday. The march will start at the Pentagon, where nearly 200 people died on 9/11, and end at the National Mall with a show by country star Clint Black. He lost me with the Clint Black concert. Pentagon memorial , even a country-western concert with some good, old American pride. official FAQ . The event has big and surprising sponsors, even the Washington Post:
Q: Who is supporting the Freedom Walk?
And it turns out this will be coming to a town near you, with or without Clint Black:
Q: Why is DoD organizing this event?
R: Since September 11, 2001, the Pentagon has provided citizens with opportunities to commemorate September 11 in meaningful ways. The America Supports You Freedom Walk is the fourth September 11 commemorative activity sponsored by the DoD. The goal for the 5th anniversary in 2006 is for each state to host a Freedom Walk in order to provide an opportunity for as many citizens as possible to reflect on the importance of freedom. DoD press release register to walk : Check out this video interview on About.com (where I also work) with the cast and crew of the Dukes of Hazard: The director says he was inspired to make the movie by 9/11 because what we need is a good, shit-kicking American movie.

Enginners include: Gene Thompson, Bill Putnam, Johnny Cue. Recorded in 1962-1963 at Capitol Studios, New York, New York; United Recording Studios, Hollywood, California; RPM International Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Todd Everett. Ray Charles had dabbled with country music at Atlantic, notably 'I'm Movin' On', but the move to ABC-Paramount prompted him to record a full album. His version of Don Gibson's 'I Can't Stop Loving You' was a transatlantic number 1 and not far behind his bittersweet performance of Eddy Arnold's 'You Don't Know Me'. Ray's own favourite was 'I Love You So Much It Hurts'. The album was so successful that he recorded a second volume and had hits with 'Take These Chains From My Heart' and 'Cryin' Time'. Although the album showed that black soul and white country could be merged, Ray Charles lost his momentum, tending to cruise along on the same theme and never again writing a song to equal 'What'd I Say'.

112. Metroactive Music | Country-Western Mortality
For all its sentiment and trappings of rural innocence, country music is evenmore efficient at killing its own than the most deathobsessed rock sub-genre.

King of Country Woe: In the midst of chaos and tragedy, Hank Williams still found time to write two of country music's greatest songs: "Your Cheating Heart" and "Kaw-Liga."
If there's a band in the hereafter, it'll be playing nothing but country and western tunesAmerica's deadliest musical genre By John Marr R Roosting at the pinnacle of the dead country music star Parthenon is Hank Williams. He was undisputedly the "King of Country Music," with a string of hits like "Love Sick Blues" and "Honky-Tonkin' " that command a passionate following today. But for all his success, the last month of his life was chaos. He was divorcing one wife, marrying another, and paying off a pregnant girlfriend. A host of ailments, exacerbated by heavy drinking, had turned him into a 29-year-old walking corpse. Despite his hits, his alcohol-induced unreliability as a performer had reduced him to playing high school gyms and small honky-tonks in the South and Midwest. Yet in the midst of this turmoil, he found time to record two of his greatest songs: "Your Cheating Heart" and "Kaw-Liga." The inevitable happened as he was being driven to a New Year's Night show in Canton, Ohio, in 1953. At a gas station in Oak Hill, W.Va., his driver noticed Hank looked worse than when he'd been carried into the car a few hours earlier. Although no one was surprised, the exact details are vague. Most likely, Hank had sedated himself to death with a mixture of alcohol and chloral hydrate (a quack alcoholism treatment) topped off with a last-minute morphine injection for his spinal pain.

The territory is phosphate-rich and believed to have offshore oil deposits. Most of it has been under Moroccan control since 1976. OVERVIEW
FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA Western Sahara fell under Spanish rule in 1884, becoming a Spanish province in 1934. Nationalism emerged in the 1960s, as nomadic Saharans, or Saharawis, settled in the region. Polisario was set up on 10 May 1973 and established itself as the sole representative of the Saharan people. Some 100,000 refugees still live in Polisario's camps in Algeria. Madrid Agreement In October 1975 the International Court of Justice rejected territorial claims by Morocco and Mauritania. The court recognised the Saharawis' right to self-determination and Spain agreed to organise a referendum. But in November 1975, Moroccan King Hassan II ordered a "Green March" of over 300,000 Moroccans into the territory. Spain backed down and negotiated a settlement with Morocco and Mauritania, known as the Madrid Agreement.
