Kansas City Scottish country Dancers website. Information on Lessons, Workshops, Balls and more!
http://www.kcscottishdancers.com/
an affiliate of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society
The Kansas City Scottish Country Dancers is an organization whose members share an interest in Scottish Country dance and music.
Country dance usually involves a "set" - a group of four to eight people - dancing a series of formations to the driving strains of reels, jigs, and strathspeys played on the fiddle, accordian, piano and/or bagpipes.
So long as there's a good rousing tune or two, good company, and an excuse to dance, there will always be Scots handy with their feet. But you don't have to be a Scot to find your foot tapping to the irresistible rhythms or to be captivated by a style of dance that is above all happy, lively, and sociable.
Join us! You certainly won't be left sitting on the sidelines. Come dance with the Kansas City Scottish Country Dancers!

What is English Country Dance?
English Country Dance is the dance form that was popular in England and America in the 1600's, 1700's and early 1800's. It is one of the dance forms from which modern contra and square dance are descended. If you've seen any of the recent Jane Austen movies then you've seen this sort of dance. We also do some early American dances from the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras. Follow this link for more information.
Who are the CIECD?
The Central Illinois English Country Dancers are a group of local dancers who do English Country and Early American dances. We are an affiliate of the Urbana Park District and we hold monthly dances at the Phillips Recreation Center at 505 W. Stoughton in Urbana (MAP) We also hold special dances twice a year, a Christmas Ball in December and a Playford Ball in June. In the summer we often have a pool party and dance in the water. Our dances are primarily social and recreational. All dances will be taught and we always have live music provided by our band

Welcome to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, San Francisco Branch.
Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS), based in Edinburgh, was founded in 1923 to preserve this joyful social dance tradition. Since then Scottish Country Dancing has spread all over the world. Unlike Highland dances, which are usually solo performances accompanied by bagpipes, Country dances are danced with partners in sets of two or more couples doing an exciting variety of formations. The music, performed live at parties and some classes, is provided by a fiddle and piano, or by a whole band. Dance tempos vary from lively jigs, hornpipes and reels, to the elegant, slower strathspeys. Interested in trying Scottish Country Dancing? Come by yourself or with a friend. No partners are needed to attend classes or parties, and you need not be Scottish to enjoy the fun. Sessions for new beginners start every September in most locations and at other times in some cities. The cost is generally $5 or less per class. Please check out class schedules , browse our bookstore , or look over our events . Join us!

  • Are you new to Traditional New England Country Dancing (or Contra Dancing)?
If you are, you'll have a wounderful time Country Dancing. Here on the edge of New England, we dance mostly contradances which are longwise sets as well as some squares and couple dances. All dances are taught, with easy dances early in the evening and progressing to harder ones later. The easiest way to learn is by getting out there and dance. Watching won't help. Don't worry about mistakes; we all make them - - - frequently. Experienced dancers simply recover from their mistakes with more grace. So relax, smile and enjoy the live music and just dance for the enjoyment of it. There is no need to skip, hop, or run. Just use an easy light walking gait. Most of the dance movements take 8 steps, a few 4 or 16 steps. The movements change when ever the music changes. Listen to the music and enjoy the dance. Before each dance session begins, the caller will walk you through the dance steps. Then the caller will lead the dance through a few more repetitions with the music. You will soon be dancing on your own - - - moving in concert with the other dancers to fantastically stimulating live old time music. You'll find choral dancing is exhilarating !

    Sue's Scottish Country Dance Page
I started Scottish Country Dancing in the fall of 1994 and immediately fell in love with it. Then I began having dances pop into my head and eventually I wrote them down. These are the dances I have written. Each dance has been danced at least once by my local group, the Silk and Thistle class of the RSCDS - Chicago Branch. Were it not for the Silk and Thistle dancers, these dances would not exist. They patiently try my dances, critique them, help tweak them when necessary, and help select music and an appropriate name. Especial favorites of the group are indicated with an "*". I plan to add dances to this list as I write them. Feel free to copy them and dance them anywhere anytime. I only request that you keep my name associated with them. I have split my dance page into several pages to make the pages shorter. Click on the year to go to the appropriate page, e.g. 2000. Dances not yet tried are listed in a red font. Feel free to contact me with questions, suggestions, or comments, or visit my home page . Thank you, and I hope you enjoy dancing these dances.
