RB Music Book
E lements of English Country Dance
By Hugh Stewart ( Hugh.Stewart@acm.org
The caveat
Firstly a caveat. Students are used to the concept of exams where they have to supply a `right' answer to a given question. Folk dances usually have several `right' answers depending on such things as what sort of music the band play, what sort of people are dancing the dance, your fancy at the time and what the phase of the moon is. My intention here is to provide assorted `right' answers, but if anyone dares to quote these notes at you and claim that you are doing it wrongly because you are doing something different, then agree politely with him (so he goes away happy), but otherwise ignore him.
Definitions from Elements of English Country Dance
You can buy your very own copy, complete with introductory material and pretty pictures
Allemande
Allemande is a Square Dance term for a turn, so Allemande left your corner translates into turn your corner with the left hand. The exact grip you use varies from place to place, and generally doesn't matter much. Square dancers hold each other's arms just above the wrist, Scottish usually hold hands (either with a shake-hand hold, or an elbow-lock), the English usually do the same as the Scots, or cup hold of each other's elbows.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our dance family who have been affected by this storm. I regret that we will be unable to hold the Southern National in Mobile, Oct 7-9, 2005. The host hotel and convention center have sustained damages, and we feel it would be best to cancel the event for this year. Our energy, our money, our help should go to our dear friends who are suffering incredible disruption of their lives. Please help me spread the word that this year's Southern National has been cancelled, and please join me in prayers for our friends. Sue Boyd

A typical Sunday evening event includes mostly contra dances (what's that?) , maybe some square dances or Anglo-American barn dances, and a few couple dances. The Tuesday English country dances ( what's that? ) feature dances in various formations, tempos, moods, etc., published as early as the 17th century.
