The Genealogy Centre located on the first floor of the Alexander Library Building in Perth, Western Australia is a great starting point for genealogists. The strength of the collection is records relating to each of the Australian states, New Zealand and Britain. For countries and regions for which the collection is not strong, up-to-date addresses are provided to assist genealogists. Services
The Genealogy Centre is accessible during normal library opening hours . Volunteers from the Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc. provide extra assistance to genealogical researchers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9.30am to 1.00pm. Overview of the Collection
The collection houses material in printed format, on microfilm, microfiche, CD-ROM and also provides access points for Internet sources. Key resources for Western Australian genelogical research are held in the Centre. More extensive resources relating to Western Australia are held in the Battye Library and the State Records Office The types of resources available for Australian genealogical researchers include indexes to births, deaths and marriages, newspapers, maps, records of cemeteries, census, convicts, courts, immigration, land allocation, probate and the military. The collection is also strong in New Zealand material with indexes to births, deaths and marriages, post office directories, and some electoral rolls. The Genealogy Centre holds 5,700 reels of Australian Joint Copying Project microfilm. These reels contain copies of records relating to Australia and the Pacific held within the Public Record Office of London.

The Hon. Peter Foss, Minister for the Arts, will launch LISWA's new Genealogy Centre on Tuesday 7 December, 1999 at the Alexander Library Building. The Genealogy Centre is designed as a focus point or 'first port of call', and will attract anyone with an interest in genealogy and family history, including both beginners and professional researchers. It will operate as a partnership between the Library and Information Service of Western Australia (LISWA) and the Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc. (WAGS) to enable clients to access the extensive collections held in the Alexander Library Building, and to provide links to related external collections and services. The Genealogy Centre is accessible during LISWA's extensive opening hours, with additional assistance provided by volunteers from the Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc. (WAGS) each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9.30am - 1.00pm. The collections comprise a wide range of genealogical materials, with strengths in resources relating to Australia including indexes to births, deaths and marriages, records of cemeteries, convicts, courts, immigration, land allocation, probate and the military. Key resources relating to Western Australia are held in the Genealogy Centre with other significant collections located in the Battye Library and State Records Office.
