How can I support my child in math at home?
Help your child discover mathematics in everyday activities. Occurrences such as sporting events, grocery store visits, or stock market discussions provide an opportunity to apply mathematical concepts in a natural manner. When discussing mathematical concepts, stress the use of precise mathematical language. Encourage your child to communicate and explain their reasoning using mathematical language. Practice basic facts through games, drill, flash cards, multiplication charts, or with the computer. Stress organization in your child's academic schedule and work. Schedule time for homework. Make sure homework is in your child's binder and/or backpack when the work is completed. Help your child set personal goals. Help them identify areas where growth and improvement can occur, and assist him/her in creating strategic plans to meet the goals. Praise and recognize your child's achievements. Celebrate them like the big accomplishments they are.

I've Seen That Shape Before
Students learn the names and explore properties of solid geometric shapes. They identify these shapes in the real-world and in pictures found on web sites. In the pre-activities and the extensions, students use physical models of simple solid shapes.
I. OVERVIEW
Grade Level : Pre-K - 2
Estimated Time: Two 45-minute sessions for the Internet Activity, 45 minutes for each Pre-Activity and Extension.
Objectives:
  • To learn the names and explore the characteristics of simple solid shapes. To recognize 3-dimensional geometric shapes in the real world. To see that a real object may have a recognizable geometric shape even though it's not a perfect representation of that shape. To recognize shapes when they are combined with other shapes.

When I received the program I feared that my kids would balk at doing the same timed workbook page day after day. Was I surprised at how much they enjoyed the challenge of trying to beat their time from the day before. This program takes only 5 minutes a day to complete and has an easy self grading format that allows older children to grade their own work. This program allows the parent to see quickly and easily were the child is making continual mistakes. This easy, affordable and successful program is showing great results in our children. Buy yourself a stop watch and be prepared to see great results in your child's calculation scores. Review submitted: Janice Simpson Jsimpson@yahoo.com

What’s Smaller Than a Pygmy Shrew
Gloria Cobb – Franklin Elementary
Written by Robin Vidimos Long experience with a cross-curricular approach is one of the reasons that students at Franklin Elementary are successful in math. Literature helps their students make mathematical connections and extend their learning. Materials from “What’s Smaller Than a Pygmy Shrew” will complement their newly adopted Everyday Mathematics series (K-6) and use literature to excite and engage their students as they discover and explore many facets of mathematics. Listening Centers for Guided Reading Leslie Csikos – Runyon Elementary Written by Alice Kreinbring This grant will purchase two listening centers and three sets of books/cassettes to be used with the curriculum. The goal is to provide these listening centers to all third grade students. Students can use the centers to participate in Book Talks where the teacher selects books for the students to discuss. Students who would not be able to read the books at a given level can still participate in the discussion by being able to listen to the books on tape. Students can also use the centers to improve and reinforce reading skills by listening to a book before or after reading it independently to improve comprehension. Another objective of this grant will be to involve parents and community members in the learning process by having them crate tapes for the listening library.

You must receive written permission from your adviser to enroll in more than 16 credits during any semester that you enroll in remedial coursework. If you want to enroll in more than 18 credits during any semester that includes remedial coursework, you must receive written permission from the dean of your college. Factors that are considered in approving credit load include your ACT score, high school class rank, overall high school record, university GPA, and demands on your time such as coursework, extracurricular activities and employment. Entering freshmen who are placed into remedial mathematics must complete the remedial coursework before earning 30 credits toward graduation. If you are in this category and fail to complete the remedial work before earning 30 credits, you will be restricted to a maximum of 12 credits, including the remedial courses, until you meet the requirement.
