SPECIAL TASK FORCE TO TARGET COUNTERFEIT GOODS DURING 2005 ALL-STAR WEEK
ICE Continues Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Efforts at Major Sporting Events
During a press conference at Comerica Park, potential counterfeiters were put on notice that counterfeiting is a crime and will be enforced to the full extent of the law.
"ICE’s broad authorities and expertise in combating trade fraud, financial crimes, and smuggling makes ICE uniquely positioned to combat the global threat posed by counterfeiters," said Brian M. Moskowitz, Special Agent in Charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in Detroit. "Our enforcement efforts target a criminal industry that costs the U.S. economy nearly a quarter trillion dollars annually."
“This anti-counterfeiting Task Force has been assembled to accomplish one single mission; to protect the thousands of Major League Baseball fans who will participate in 2005 All-Star Week in Detroit," said Ethan Orlinsky, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Major League Baseball Properties. “Counterfeiting is a serious offense that is constantly monitored by the participating local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, and we will work together to ensure fans that every licensed product purchased during 2005 All-Star Week is of the high quality associated with the Major League Baseball brand.”
The Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force warned that undercover teams of investigators would be on the lookout for counterfeit merchandise at All-Star Week events at Comerica Park and the COBO Center as well as at manufacturing facilities, retail stores and sidewalk vendors in and around Detroit.

RFID Technology and EPC in Retail
Executive Summary
The ability to access information anytime, anywhere is vital in today's fast-paced world. More than ever, people need mobile information solutions to improve productivity and operate more efficiently. This technical brief discusses the impact of RFID on retailers, future innovations in retailing and recent developments in widespread deployments.
Introduction
RFID technology is used to tag, identify and track individual items, cases and pallets as they move from the manufacturing floor through the supply chain and into the hands of the buyer or consumer. As the objects move through the supply chain, wireless RFID readers can communicate with an RFID tag on the object, collect information about the object (such as a unique number) and match that number in a database to access a complete record about the object. This real-time technology provides unprecedented speed and accuracy in the supply chain.
EPC and RFID
Pallet with EPC tag Electronic product code (EPC™) is a new standard that is reviewed in the second section of this brief. EPC is well positioned to become the open standard for RFID technology and a key information tool in the retail supply chain. EPC-RFID has great potential to deliver bottom-line business benefits on a mass scale.

Cash, fake goods seized from business
July 28, 2005 BY AMBER HUNT MARTIN
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER That Vicks inhaler you bought from the corner drugstore last weekend? It might be a fake. Those Duracell batteries you just put in your smoke detector could be phony, too. So says the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, which alleges it uncovered thousands of dollars worth of counterfeit merchandise from batteries to Oakley sunglasses to baseball caps sporting trademarked team logos during a Wednesday raid of a business in Dearborn Heights. About $15,000 in cash also was seized from Private Collections, a T-shirt printing and hat-embroidering business. Authorities said the business sold the counterfeit products to area stores, which in turn sold them to customers. They said they don't know how many stores in the region were stocked with the sham items. "We definitely feel there's well in excess of $10,000 in products," said Sgt. Larry Crider. A man who Sheriff's Office officials said was in charge of the operation was arrested but wasn't identified. Authorities would only say that he lives in Dearborn Heights and is in his 30s. If charged and convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and possible federal charges, Crider said.

CLC/Bob Lowry (lowrygr@mail.auburn.edu) COUNTERFEITERS BEWARE: ENFORCEMENT TEAM TO PATROL GAME AUBURN Representatives from The Collegiate Licensing Company will be in search of counterfeit merchandise at the Auburn-Alabama football game on Saturday.
Both universities receive a percentage on each piece of officially licensed merchandise sold, but the sale of counterfeit merchandise costs Auburn University and the University of Alabama thousands of dollars in lost revenues each year. As the exclusive licensing representative for both universities, CLC is responsible for protecting and enforcing the universities' trademark rights.
As one of the most heated rivalries in the nation, the Auburn-Alabama game is a potential target for counterfeiters who want to produce and sell knock-off merchandise. CLC representatives have been present at the annual showdown for the past 10 years, a nd have worked closely with law enforcement officials statewide to combat the counterfeiting problem.
This year, CLC will work closely with Auburn law enforcement officials, along with representatives from AU, to patrol the marketplace before, during and after the game. All counterfeit merchandise is subject to seizure, and counterfeiters will be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, says Bruce Siegal, vice president and general counsel for CLC.

Detectives and investigators from Investigative Consultants, a private security consulting firm, confiscated counterfeit Rolex, Tag Heuer, Breitling and other brand watches. Capt. Customs destroys
    fake merchandise
    By Jaymes K. Song
Star-Bulletin U.S. Customs officials literally steamrolled over thousands of fake designer watches and other items near the International Marketplace in Waikiki today in hopes of discouraging vendors from selling counterfeit merchandise. The 3,000 phony watches, sunglasses and pieces of jewelry were seized from David and Cindy Giang's Kapahulu home in June 1996 following a two-year undercover operation. The items were ordered destroyed by the court. "We would consider them as a significant supplier," U.S. Customs Service Supervisory Special Agent Michael Cox said of the Giangs. After pleading guilty in May to trafficking counterfeit merchandise, David Giang was sentenced to 13 months in federal prison and fined $15,000. Cindy Giang was sentenced to eight months and $10,000. The destroyed fake merchandise included trademarks of Rolex, Boy London, Christian Dior, Chanel, Pierre Nicole, Tag Heuer, Geneva, Dunhill, Guess and even Disney's Mickey Mouse. Officials valued the items at about $200,000 to $250,000 wholesale. Wholesalers bought watches for about $50 each and sold them to individuals for at least double that amount, Cox said.

Eagan man charged with counterfeiting Oakley sunglasses
Posted: 7/28/03 by Erin Johnson Thisweek Newspapers An Eagan man has been charged with two counts of counterfeiting for allegedly selling counterfeit Oakley sunglasses over the Internet. Joseph Francis Werb, 25, allegedly sold thousands of replica sunglasses with Oakley markings along with counterfeit purses, clothing and watches between February of 2002 and May of 2003, according to the Dakota County Attorney’s Office. According to the complaint, the Eagan Police Department was contacted by a private investigator working on behalf of Oakley, Inc. about a possible illegal distribution of counterfeit Oakley sunglasses over the Internet. The complaint states that four cease and desist letters had been sent to a post office box listed on the Web site located at a St. Paul UPS store. The letters advised the Web site that it was violating the Trademark Act and demanded that it immediately cease and desist the sale of the knockoff glasses.

Chinese national sentenced to prison for dealing in counterfeit merchandise United States Attorney Michael Shelby announced today that Zheng Xiao Yi, a citizen of the Peoples Republic of China who owned and operated an import and wholesale business in the Harwin Drive area of Houston, has been sentenced to more than five (5) years in federal prison for trafficking in counterfeit goods. At a hearing held Feb. 14, 2005, Yi was sentenced to serve a total of 63 months in federal prison for trafficking in counterfeit merchandise illegally imported from his native China. Zheng also faces deportation upon his release from prison. Zheng, the owner of XYZ Trading Corp., located at 7018 Harwin Drive, Houston, Texas, was convicted in July 2004 following a jury trial of six counts of trafficking and attempting to traffic in merchandise imported from China carrying counterfeit trademarks. The counterfeit trademarks were identical with or substantially indistinguishable from genuine trademarks registered to The Gillette Company, Underwriters Laboratories Inc., Marvel Enterprises, Inc., and Nike Inc., including Duracell batteries and flashlights, Spider-Man figures, extension cords and power- strips and Nike slippers. The jury's verdicts were returned following a four day trial during which the United States proved that Zheng, a Harwin Drive importer and wholesaler, trafficked in counterfeit goods imported from China between August 2003 and November 2003.

IN SALE OF FAKE DESIGNER MERCHANDISE
Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon announced today that 14 people have been arrested and approximately $750,000 in merchandise seized as the result of an undercover investigation into the sale of counterfeit items purportedly made by top designers.
"As we begin the holiday shopping season," Dillon said, "these arrests should put consumers on alert: you don’t always get what you think you are paying for."
According to Dillon, "This investigation began in September of this year when a detective from the District Attorney’s Squad of the Nassau County Police Department was approached about purchasing some quality fake Louis Vuitton merchandise. The detective contacted Louis Vuitton, and was put in touch with Abacus Investigations and Security, an authorized representative of Louis Vuitton and most top designers. Upon learning that Abacus Security had received other complaints about stores in Nassau County selling counterfeit merchandise, we opened an investigation.
"Our investigators began visiting stores in Nassau County and purchasing counterfeit merchandise purportedly made by such top designers as Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Fendi. They also observed items purportedly made by Burberry, Hermes, Rolex, Gucci, and Cartier, which they also believed to be counterfeit. Eventually each such location was searched and the counterfeit merchandise seized.
