Groups
A good source for costuming information is the SCA, Society of Creative Anachronism. The avowed purpose of the SCA is the study and recreation of the European Middle Ages, its crafts, sciences, arts, traditions, literature, etc. The SCA "period" is defined to be 600 AD to 1600 AD, concentrating on the Western European High Middle Ages. You can find SCA members in the newsgroup rec.org.sca. If you post there, be sure to mention your city and state so that those who respond can suggest local SCA groups and sources. I believe that SCA has several phamplets or publications specifically on costuming (aka "garb"). If you wish to contact the SCA national headquarters you can write to: The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. Office of the Registry P.O. Box 360743 Milpitas, CA 95036-0743 Be sure to check the list of sources and references in the regular alt.sewing and rec.crafts.textiles FAQ. A number are appropriate for costuming.

About Worldcon Programme Guests of Honour Exhibits ... Web Site
Masquerade - Chaos Costuming
What is chaos costume and why do you need to know about it?
Imagine a room with a vast pile of fabric in it, a pile so vast you could dive into it and bury yourself. Imagine that this room also contains a couple of sewing machines, glue guns, pins, needles, thread, sequins, wire, cardboard and stuff . A skilled costumer is on hand to advise, others are sitting around making things, there might be music playing or a tv showing previous masquerades or some movie with a strong costume element. Ok, well, what you’re seeing is a chaos costume room, a staple at British conventions. So, why are you seeing it? Because there’s going to be one at Interaction, the 2005 Worldcon. And why should you care? Because we appreciate the difficulty of transporting costumes over the Atlantic. Even if you could fit it into a suitcase and get it through customs, that’s so much less space to take home books and things you might want to buy on your travels. So, wouldn’t it be nice if all you had to take with you was the idea? (And perhaps just a few essential bits?) And then make the actual costume at the con? And be able to leave it there after, to be recycled?
