lothing during the reign of Elizabeth always reflected the social status of the wearer. There would be no doubt in ones mind about picking out the nobility in any given crowd. Clothing was a direct indication of wealth, much in the manner of imported suits in the present. The cost of clothing was related to the type of fabric and (in the days before synthetic dyes) the color. Purple dye was extracted by crushing thousands of tiny sea snails; similarly, crimson dye was obtained by crushing a certain type of beetle. Processed fabrics such as velvet or corduroy were costly, as were satins and other fine weaves. Cotton, although common in this day and age, was expensive and uncommon before the rise of the cotton gin. Harvested cotton was cleaned by hand, a lengthy and laborious process. Cotton was imported from India or the Americas with an associated high cost before taxation. Cotton was an expensive fabric up til the 1800s. Flax and wool were the more common fibres. Flax (a plant called flax) is made into linen, which while expensive now, wasn't when it was homespun. Wool yarn became wool fabric of all weights, including tweed which was woven wool fabric that had been beaten on one side while wet to form a wooly, wind-proof material.

Welcome to a hobby of mine , we all have them, some are more expensive than others and you really need a HUGE budget for this one! Costuming!! I have one room in our home dedicated to this hobby. I would say that costuming takes a great deal of knowledge of textiles, history, math, and engineering. Yes, that's right, math and engineering. If you do not know how to plot a curve or calculate the amount of square inches you will need for a pattern you will need to learn fast. You will purchase fabric by the yard but you will have to know how to lay out your pattern on it to be able to use the maximum amount of your yardage. Sure if you buy a commercial pattern it shows you how to lay it out and how much fabric at what width to purchase. But if you are like most costumers you will graduate to making your own patterns and with that comes the knowledge of how much fabric and trims you really need to buy. It will be second nature in no time to you and it is all math! So if you were bad at math in school it was because they did not use fabric and pattern making as an example to help you learn.

m Helmet Hello! Welcome to The Meditation Chamber!
I've set up this site to describe how I made my Vader costume. My suit has been a work in progress since 1978, and it is always undergoing modifications and upgrades.
My costume, shown below, is made mostly from ordinary houshold items and hard ware store finds.
Since I stand at a whopping 5'2", the Standard Don Post Studios mask works well with my proportions. I've scaled down all of the accessories to 75%. I'm literally a 3/4 scale version of my favorite Sith Lord!
In 2000, I got involved in the internet and discovered how many other people enjoy creating their own Vader costumes. I've provided links to some of my favorite sites and forums. Good luck in your quest to build a Darth Vader costume.

"I would try taking a scrap strand of sequins and washing them the same way you would the costume and see what happens." Z'alandra "I might even suggest attaching the strand [of sequins] to a scrap piece of the cloth your costume is made from, just to make sure the colors do not run on to one another! Who knows what might happen to a white satin with dark colored sequins." Jennifer "[Washing sequins in cold or any temperature water] MAY ruin them. You would certainly not put them in the washing machine! The reason is the dye on the plastic (that is what sequins are made from today)they used to be metal) may not be very stable. Of greater concern, frankly, is the backing fabric. If it is silk, or cotton, or rayon that was not preshrunk before the sequins were attached, you run the risk of shrinking that fabric and bringing on a real disaster. If you know how to do a burn test on the fibers, that would be one way to find out. Otherwise, try putting drops of water on an inside or unnoticeable spot. If you notice any shrinking of the backing fabric or a change in color in the sequins, stay away from it. You should be able to safely clean the outside of the sequins with a DAMP cloth." Kareema

  • Practice! When you get a new costume, practice in it at home before you ever wear it on stage the first time. Do the same sort of dance when you practice that you plan to do when you're on stage. In other words, if you'll be doing veil work on stage, include that in your practice. Find out how your costume pieces move, whether anything catches on them, whether you'll trip on the length of the skirt, whether it constricts your movements in any way before you're on stage in front of your audience!
