PHOTO ARCHIVE Ensemble Munojot 10TH ANNUAL CENTRAL ASIAN DANCE CAMP "Exploring Afro-Asiatic Connections" Monday, June 13 - June 17, 2005 Weekday Daytime classes 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Weekday Evening classes 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Sunday, June 19, 2005  11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Co-sponsored by the Uzbek Dance and Culture Society and World Arts Focus, with guest teachers People’s Artist of Uzbekistan Qizlarhon Dustmuhamedova and North African Dance Artist Amel Tafsout. Description Located at opposite ends of the Islamic World, Central Asia and North Africa possess rich and distinct cultures. Yet in spite of these differences, women's dances share some intriguing similarities. In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Central Asian Dance Camp, we will explore the historical, artistic and spiritual links between these two regions. Set at the heart of the Great Silk Road, Central Asia is crossed by an ancient network of caravan routes that linked China with the Mediterranean. The dances of the region reflect the rich legacy of many cultures, both indigenous and foreign. Through commerce and conquest, Iranian, Turkic, Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and Mongolian elements have entered dance styles of the region.

by Dawn Devine Brown and Barry Brown Costuming from the Hip is a comprehensive reference for anyone who works with Middle Eastern dance costumes. Dancers will like the costume design ideas, information on accessories, and plentiful hints for achieving the best fit from their costumes, whether they came from an existing collection, were purchased off the rack, or were custom-made by a designer. Costume makers will enjoy the dozens of included garment patterns, construction and fitting techniques, and instructions for flattering different body types. And historical re-enactors will like the extensive bibliography, costuming facts, and patterns for historical costumes with instructions for developing them to fit their own body. With over two hundred original illustrations, this 120-page book will step you though researching Middle Eastern designs for costumes, creating the pattern, constructing the garment, and accessorizing. Along with its bibliography for further study, the book contains a list of vendors that specialize in Middle Eastern dancewear. There is also a section on men's costumes which answers many of the questions raised by costume makers frustrated with the lack of information on this subject. The first edition of Costuming from the Hip sold out nationwide within weeks of its introduction and is no longer available. The new, revised edition is 50% longer and contains dozens of new illustrations and patterns.

    (06.15.05) Heartwarming note
Sempstress has had over 40,000 unique visitors so far this year (and served almost 215,000 pages). That's a lot of people! I remember back when I first started running this site, how excited I was to log 1,000 hits to my main page. *laugh* I also received my first PayPal donation. It was very sweet, and it made me so happy I almost cried. Thank you, S.
(06.14.05) Who's using all these pages?
I've started adding links on my pattern pages to the work of other costumers who have been kind enough to come forward and let me know they've used the patterns. If you've used any of my patterns, and you'd like to be linked in, please send me email. I'd love to see what you've done, and get a link up. It'll be peachy-keen! I'll also be adding in a gallery page to collect all those links, and feature costumers who said that while they didn't use any one pattern specifically, they used the site as a whole. I've also had to resort to begging. The other thing that's now on all of the pattern pages is a PayPal donation button. It takes both money and time to keep this site up, and add new stuff to it. I didn't get a chance to add anything to the site over the winter, because I was working so much just to be able to make my rent and bills. After a family emergency early in the spring, I had to leave my job to have time to deal with things. Right now, I'm basically relying on my sewing business to make ends meet, and I'm strapped. There's a very real danger that this site will be one of the things that I won't be able to do anymore. Please, if the information I've posted has helped you make your own costumes, or costumes for others, consider sending me a couple bucks. You can help keep this site online.
