Thewa the exquisite art of jewellery making from the land of royal colours- Rajasthan, conceived during Mughal dynasty around 350 years ago in a princely state of Rajputs, when art and splendour were a way of life. The art was started by a single family of Marwar, who shared the secret of its making amongst them, generation to generation, virtually unchanged. Beginning of this unique art is still a mystery. Thewa is a traditional art of fusing intricately worked thin sheet of 23K Gold(which comprises the design) with multicoloured glass. The glass is treated by a special process to have glittering effects, which in turn highlights the intricate gold work. The whole Thewa piece is hand crafted over a period of one month by skilled artisans. Thewa, an art that pulsates with life, caught seemingly in movement, in motifs used on jewellery, which shows the culture, heritage and tales of romance and valour of Rajasthan with nature and happiness depicting the art of the fine craftsmanship.

Crafts, Folk Art And Ethnic Culture
SASKATCHEWAN INDIAN MAY 1980 v10 n05 p23 Interest in crafts, folk art, and ethnic culture is on the increase, not only among the Indian people seeking their "roots'.', but among the other ethnic groups of Saskatchewan. A number of artists are crossing cultural barriers to evolve a new art form, while others stick to traditional practices. With the rediscovery of the "lost arts", a number of fine craftspeople have developed in the province. Their stories, along with photographs appear in a recent Saskatchewan Government publication entitled SASKATCHEWAN CRAFTSPEOPLE. Featured in the book are potters, woodcarvers, and even a wheelwright. Three of the craftspeople also featured are Saskatchewan Indians working with traditional materials to produce functional, creative and ceremonial artifacts. Featured in this edition of the Saskatchewan Indian are their stories, and some of the many photos which appear in SASKATCHEWAN CRAFTSPEOPLE. Free copies of SASKATCHEWAN CRAFTSPEOPLE are available by writing: Visual Arts and Crafts Co-ordinator, Cultural Activities Branch, Saskatchewan Culture and Youth, 11th Floor, Avord Towers, 2002 Victoria Street, Regina, Saskatchewan, S4P 3V7.

MODULE 5: Selection and Development of Local Topics
    I. The aims for development of local topics for teaching and learning
In the National Primary Curriculum, there is a 10-15% window to teach local topics across all subjects. However, so far not much attention has been paid to this issue by either the provincial education services or district education services. This needs to be reconsidered soon.
II. Local topics taught at primary schools are very meaningful as well as beneficial:
    • It makes the curriculum more comprehensive and relevant.
    • If local topics are taught as primary schools, it will make the schools closer to the communities, serving the socio-economic development of the locality.
    • In ethnic minority areas, local topics will contribute to the maintenance and development of traditional culture and lifestyle of ethnic minority groups and to unite all ethnic minority groups.

    Historical Costumes
James Acheson James Acheson started out with various Monty Python movies, and Brazil directed by Python alumni Terry Gilliam. (The Python TV series was done by Hazel Pethig.) In recent years he has costumed Bernardo Bertolucci's spectacles, including The Last Emperor, The Sheltering Sky, and Little Buddha. He has also done richly decadent looking costumes for such powdered wig era dramas as Restoration and Dangerous Liaisons. Rich use of color: bright reds in Restoration, orange in Bertolucci films. His work is oddly complementary in time and place to Beavan and Bright, either being set in a much earlier era than theirs (such as the 17th-18th Century) or in locations they have never visited (North Africa, China, Nepal). His work is with an edge, off-center, engulfing. Coleen Atwood Films set in the recent past (1950's - 1960's). Clothes have a humorous, tongue in cheek quality: look at those strange clothes people wore back then! Still very splashy and fun. Likes bright colors, humorously over-bright, in fact. Captures look of suburbia, middle class dreams of splendor, at once glamorous and hopelessly middle brow: see the rock clothes of That Thing You Do, evening wear in Ed Woods. Works extensively with Jonathan Demme (Married to the Mob, Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, That Thing You Do!) and Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Woods, Mars Attacks!). Older era historical films: Wyatt Earp, Little Women. Also: Love Field, Born Yesterday.

of the creative spirit of the Macedonian people
The traditional folk costumes embrace traits of the various cultures represented in this part of the Balkan. They convey the skill and inventiveness of native designers - Macedonian women, who manufactured themselves their outfits of homespun thread (usually wool, linen, cotton, hemp), using traditional tools. Until the early decades of the 20th century, when folk costumes reached their peak and were still widely worn and adorned, there were over 70 different kinds of richly decorated costumes on the territory of Macedonia. Every region had its distinctive attire, which differed from the clothing of the adjacent region in its stylistic, aesthetic and functional features. The reason for the appearance of so many different costumes, particularly for women, is the geographic isolation of the ethic areas, as well as frequent migrations and ethnic diversity of the population. The features that make traditional costumes magnificent are the embroidery (in rich geometric and geometricized floral patterns), appliqués, woven ornaments, adornment with fringes, fine metal thread - srma, and braids, as well as jewelry, made of metal, beads and fruits of the nature.
