An Introduction to the Work of Alphonse Mucha and Art Nouveau
[This lecture by Ian Johnston of Malaspina University-College, Nanaimo, BC, is part of the Liberal Studies Abroad curriculum associated with the trip to Prague in July 2004. This document is in the public domain and may be used by anyone, in whole or in part, without permission and without charge, provided the source is acknowledged—released March 2004] Some Preliminary Observations “If anyone is destined to become an artist and follows this career led by a mysterious and irresistible force, then it is Mucha. . . . He submits without argument, as he himself says, to the commands of this watchful, protective force which propels him through life as if he were sleepwalking, placing before his feet at decisive moments the stops to success.” (Victor Champier, quoted Mucha 95) There is no doubt that of all modern Czech visual artists Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) enjoyed and continues to enjoy the most international recognition, influence, and popularity (in marked contrast to his reputation within his own Czech homeland). Those factors alone would be sufficient reason to make a study of his work a central part of our studies in this course.

List Serve (or LISTSERV) is essentially a mailing list service that often runs on IBM mainframes or UNIX servers. It is a program that handles mailing lists, taking in information from people on the mailing list and distributing it to all members of the group. LISTSERV can handle many different mailing lists, which each has a different name to distinguish them. Internet mailing lists are in most cases communities of people sitting around discussing one of their favorite topics by e-mail. Buying Antique Ethnographic Jewelry by Palika In general, truly valuable collectibles cannot be purchased dirt cheap. There are good deals yes, but authentic antiques increase in value over time and are rarely available for KMart prices. The other side of this, is that there seems to be a dirge of ethnic "junk", reproductions and ethnic market costume jewelry (of various qualities), represented as ancient relics, tribal ritual objects or as antiques, that are purchased by the unaware public for way more than they are worth. Please read on, to learn some guidelines that will help you to determine just what it is you want, and just how much you should pay for it. At the very least you will learn some powerful questions to ask a seller in order to determine their knowledge, dependability and their ethics. Rule 1: What's in a name? This brings us to a very important point. It is not bad to buy or want or appreciate newly made ethnographic jewlery. What is crucial is that you know the differences that exist, so you know exactly what you are buying and how much to pay for it. Today throughout India, Turkey, Nepal, Africa and other countries, small communities are developing artisan coops to maintain traditional indigenous artistic techniques and designs. This is a powerful effort to preserve cultural traditions and relevance and participate in a market economy. I wholly support buying these goods which maintain a high standard of quality.

Cultural/Ethnic Issues and the Prevention Scientist in the 21st Century
Mark W. Roosa, Larry E. Dumka, Nancy A. Gonzales, and George P. Knight
Arizona State University ABSTRACT
Minorities are overrepresented among high-risk groups, but only recently has progress been made in understanding how ethnicity/culture matters in developing, implementing, or evaluating prevention programs for these groups. Few prevention programs are developed specifically to fit the ecological niches, needs, and values of minority groups. We highlight several areas in which enhanced training for future prevention scientists is needed for improved prevention services for minority groups to become a reality including: (a) the role of values in guiding behavior and the content and attractiveness of prevention programs; (b) the importance of enculturation and acculturation in the mental health of many minority groups; (c) the need for theory, research, and methods about measurement equivalence to become a fundamental tool for prevention scientists; and (d) a process approach to developing culturally competent preventive interventions. Mark W. Roosa and Larry E. Dumka are in the Department of Family and Human Development, Arizona State University. Nancy A. Gonzales and George P. Knight are in the Psychology Department, Arizona State University. All authors are affiliated with Arizona State University's Preventive Intervention Research Center.

51. Learn-to-belly-dance: Styles And Other Names For Belly Dance

http://www.learn-to-belly-dance.com/styles.html
What is the belly dance?
The Belly Dance is identified by swaying hips, undulating torso, and articulated isolations employed in a range of dynamic and emotional expressions. Characteristic movements in the dance include curving patterns, undulations, thrusts, lifts, locks, and drops, and shaking or quaking body movements. The focus is on isolated movements of individual parts of the body with little notice given to the footsteps. Arms and hands move fluidly, like serpents or ribbons in the air. Unusual strength and control is demonstrated in the belly area.
Costumes typically consist of a bra and hip-belt set worn over a floor length skirt. The skirt may be circular or straight. Instead of the skirt and bra, a dancer may wear a gown called a baladi dress topped with a hip-belt or a hip-scarf. Dancers may also use a length of fabric (such as silk or chiffon) during one part of the dance sequence, and she may also play finger cymbals. Costuming changes from place to place and from time to time, but the one constant is that the designs intend to emphasize and amplify the grace, power and independent control of the feminine form.
Constant themes of bellydancing:

Ethnographic Museum, Belgrade.
In the wide variety of costumes, apart from the special traits of costumes which varied from village to village, there were also other differences between villagers and urban dwellers in terms of the way they dressed. Urban clothing in most of the Serbian ethnic territories developed under Turkish and oriental influences. Later, as in Pannonia and along the Adriatic, that influence was largely European. Urban costumes in the Balkan-Oriental style, made of expensive cloths and bearing gold and silver embroidery, were of high artisan craftsmanship. Up to the twentieth century, on the other hand, peasant dress was mostly the product of home and other village handwork. They were fashioned by women, though certain parts of the costumes were done by village artisans. Experience and tradition were passed from elder to younger, from generation to generation. The very first glance at the diversity of village dress reveals certain specificities in the combination of the functional, artistic and aesthetic characteristics of the clothes worn in an entire region. Identical or similar economic circumstances, brought on by the geographical setting, by historical, social and cultural development, all influenced the generation of certain elements of clothing in the framework of larger cultural and geographic regions, such as those in the Dinaric, Adriatic, central Balkan and Pannonian regions. In each region a basic type of dress is characteristic, appearing in many different costuming and decorative forms. The differences originated in the variety of materials for making and decorating which the particular region offered, the pattern-forms and decorative means, and the costuming tradition and level of cultural development.
