NATIVE DRESS, FASHION OR COSTUME?
When volunteering to work at a German-American event or an International fair, you may be told to "come in costume." Meant is usually the stereotypical Bavarian Dirndl for the gals and white shirt and Lederhosen for the guys. Dirndl dress and Lederhosen are folk-style clothes and as such are costumes; they are city folks' image of simple country life. It's something one puts on to be, for a little while, something one is not. Much to the amusement of visitors from German- speaking areas, our outfits vaguely resemble "Tracht" worn in the Alpine regions of Bavaria and Austria. Together with Oktoberfests, Germanfests, Strassenfests and wives/war brides, they were brought over by the GIs, stationed in Southern Germany. About the many and rich variations of earlier garment brought from other German-speaking regions little is known today. A "Tracht" is a traditional garment typical of a certain area. The word "Tracht" is related to the verb "tragen," "to wear." Before the leveling effect of urbanization, native dress was always bound to a given place, a specific social unit, and a local culture. This explains the great regional diversity. In his article " About Dialects and High German " (Spring 1996, Vol. 12, Issue 2) Eberhard Reichmann showed vastly different dialect and cultural areas from which German-speaking people came and still come. Each region not only has its own dialect, it also has its own set of customs and traditions, including dress.

http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/texasczech/Folk ways/Kroje/Kroje Article 2.htm
Kroje (Folk Costumes)Links to the Past “Folk costume” has been defined as “the visible, outward badge of folk-group identity, worn consciously to express that identity. In the peasant cultures of Europe, identity was determined geographically, and local costumes expressed locality, region, or province…(1).” The traditional folk costume of Bohemia and Moravia (and Slovakia) is called “Kroje.” In a history of Slovak Folk Costumes, it is written: Although the same basic articles of clothes constitute as components of the folk costumes throughout the Czech lands, the shapes, colors, designs, and decorations of these components varies greatly. “There are many varieties of costumes (kroje) in Czechoslovakia,” wrote Ms. Willa Mae Cervenka in the June 1992 issue of the eský hlas “Out of approximately 550 costumes, 27 are more familiar to us because they bear the names of important cultural centers…Each county has its own costume, but each village within that county varies just a bit. The differences among the costumes can be explained by the different geographical positions and influences by neighboring cultures. To a great extend, the appearance of the kroje depends, not only on the district of origin, but also on the purpose for they were used. Fine distinguishing features such as embroidery, colors, shapes of designs, ornaments, flowers, and the style of the woman’s blouses, kerchiefs, lace, etc. characterized the locality. They were so distinctive that an expert could identify the origin of each costume. (3)”

Clothing Clothing is an important ethnic feature of the nation. The origins of Belarusian clothing tradition lie in the ancient Kiewan Rus'. The moderate continental climate, long winter and mild summer required a closed, warm clothing. Fabrics

The clothing of "mahnat"(big landlords) and city aristocracy was developing within the Western European tradition. It was made out of expensive fabrics, decorated with golden and silver embroidery, precious stones, colored buttons. The important composites of male dress were satin "z^upan"(a dressing gown) with "kuntus^"(coat, caftan?) on top of it, a long belt, wolf or beaver fur. The female clothes included "fereziia", "hazuka", "c^amara"(different types of blouse), decorated on the sides with ornaments or the fur of sobol, marten or fox. The aristocratic clothing has started to simplify at the end of XVIII c. Here you can see an example of the aristocratic clothing reconstruction as it was in XVI-XVII cc demonstrated in the court of Radzivil's Castle in Niasvizh The folk dress was influencing the costume of aristocracy and was influenced itself by an aristocratic clothing. The belarusian costume of XVI-XVI c was enriched with new elements like "andarak" (a type of coat), "harset" (a type of top blouse) and with new principles of wearing - the technics of tieing. The siluet became tighter to figure and was more reflecting Renaissance attitude to the world. The tendencies in costume at this time were general strictness, majority of white color in some elements, traditional combination of white and red colors, geometrical ornaments - in accordance with the eastern-slavic tradition of clothing.

The plays considered here-The Wash, Yankee Daivg You Die, and Day Standing on its Head-witness a shift from those more recognizably "Asian American" to those whose "Asian Americanness" is more peripheral. Throughout, Gotanda strives to maintain his right and ability to speak to both audiencesAsian American and other. Furthermore, Gotanda's development shows deliberate resistance to reductive ethnic readings. In these plays, Gotanda's conceptual framework seems to open outward, as he complicates the notion of just what "Asian American" is or can be. Previous Next

Thirty-five textile works by Washington artists are included. Ka Ly and Mao Moua Ly, Spokane, demonstrate Hmong needlework through visually stimulating designs that combine vibrant complementary colors in geometric patterns emphasizing optical motion and dynamic works in fabric. Working in the African-American quilt tradition, Seattle artists Marita Dingus, Almerphy Frank-Brown, Iris Franklin, Gwen Maxwell-Williams and Brenetta Ward present a vast diversity of quilting technique and cultural influence. Some follow the quilting tradition of recycled materials, derived from an earlier necessity. Others follow an inner expression that gives pleasure through design and color. Marie Bakke Bremner, Republic, learned needlework at the age of five from her Norwegian immigrant mother. Bremmer continues the Norwegian tradition of Hardanger stitching and quilt design.

Sunday, October 31, 2004 Happy Halloween Knitted Things
by Karla Kuskin
There was a witch who knitted things:
Elephants and playground swings.
She knitted rain,
She knitted night,
But nothing really came out right.
The elephants had just one tusk
And night looked more
Like dawn or dusk. The rain was snow And when she tried To knit an egg It came out fried. She knitted birds With buttonholes And twenty rubber butter rolls. She knitted blue angora trees. She purl stitched countless purple fleas. She knitted a palace in need of a darn. She knitted a battle and ran out of yarn. She drew out a strand Of her gleaming, green hair And knitted a lawn Till she just wasn't there. link Tuesday, October 26, 2004 Sub-rational connections between mobility and technology The Temporary Travel Office "The Travel Office provides services relating to tourism, technology and art. The mission of the Office is to identify sub-rational connections between mobility and technology, producing events and artifacts that might materilize such relationships for various publics." Ryan Griffis' projects include tourist kits that contain emergency ponchos printed with definitions of "Invasive Species" in Norwegian and portable irrigation kits for Southern California that can be distributed by community members in spaces that are in need of physical and/or cultural attention, as well as travel brochures with everything you need to know about biotech and postcards to send to the life sciences industry.
