Destinations Costa Rica About Costa Rica History
History of Costa Rica
Costa Rica has a strong history of neutrality and peaceful existence, mainly due to the fact that no aggressive nation ever found Costa Rica to be a strategic military hold, nor a land of wealth. Pre-Conquest There is little trace of pre-conquest cultures in Costa Rica. The civilizations of the Mexico region, including the Aztecs, the Mayans and the Olmecs, did not expand as far south as Costa Rica. There were some groups inhabiting the region and the most notable traces of these people are the precious metals (primarily jade and gold) found dated back at least 2000 years. These archeological finds can be found at the Museo de Jade (Jade Museum) and Museo de Oro Precolombino (Pre-Columbian Gold Museum) Very little is known about the pre-Columbian cultures that mined the precious metals and settled in Costa Rica before the Spanish conquest. The culture left signs of civilizations in pottery, sculptures and stonework. The best archeological site in Costa Rica is found at the Monumento Nacional Guayabo, about 85km east of the capital, San Jose.

Center for Sustainable Development Studies
Costa Rica

Cuidad Colon, El Rodeo,
Atenas, 1993-present The first SFS program in Costa Rica took place in the summer of 1984. Twelve students and two faculty members spent a month in Guanacaste Province studying the population distribution of howler monkeys in an area that had been deforested. Over the next eight years, SFS summer programs in Costa Rica focused on one of three topics: tropical rainforest ecology, endangered sea turtles, or primates. Beginning in 1989, SFS began discussions with a number of US colleges about the possibility of collaborating on a new center. The Center for Sustainable Development Studies grew out of a recognition that industrialized countries must find ways to cooperate with developing countries to discover environmentally sustainable paths for socio-economic change. Initially, SFS looked at opening the center in Zimbabwe but a number of logistical problems there necessitated a change in venue. In what ended up being a fortunate turn of events, the center found its home in Costa Rica with the help of early Consortium members, the University of Michigan, Allegheny, Colby, Middlebury, and Dickinson Colleges as well as the Arnold D. Frese Foundation which contributed essential start-up funds. In Fall 1993 the center relocated to what is now its permanent home in Barrio Los Angeles just outside of the town of Atenas in Costa Rica's fertile Central Valley.

This is the one book you will find on the shelves of every research station, park, and preserve. Highly Recommended by Daniel H. Janzen (Editor), Paperback, 816 pages, Publisher: University of Chicago Press, (November 1983), ISBN: 0226393348 Tropical Nature : Life and Death in the Rain Forests of Central and South America A series of essays by the two authors (Forsyth mainly in Costa Rica, Miyata mainly in Ecuador). Chapters include, epiphytes, bugs and drugs, army ants, artful guises, Jerry's maggot, night walks. The authors encourage you to get to know the rainforest by hanging out there. The writing style is much more original and engaging than many authors that have attempted the same book. For example there is a chapter (fertility) on pooping in the woods, then waiting and watching as the rainforest assimilates your contribution to fertility.

http://www.tcnj.edu/~dandre6/costa_rica.htm
Costa Rica Brief History Costa Rica was discovered by European explorers along with many other countries in Central and South America by Christopher Columbus in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Columbus arrived on September 18, 1502, and it was later colonized by Spain along with the rest of the area. After the Central American independence from Spain on September 15, 1821, Costa Rica did not have a well-developed and efficient government. After many periods of different types of governments, the country experienced a shift toward democracy with the election of President Jose Joaquin Rodriguez in 1889, but it still faced many hardships through the years including a civil war in 1948. Since 1948 Costa Rica has had a mostly stable history, existing for a period as the only democratic government in Central America. With the exception of the decade of the 1980s, it has had a stable growing economy, and a capable democratic government. The country maintains a neutral stance and does not have a standing army, but rather a national police force. The Arias Peace Plan Beginning in 1980, Costa Rica and its government faced serious hardships as a result of the Sandinista/Contra war, mostly taking place in neighboring Nicaragua. The Communist Sandinistas were being challenged by the contras, who were largely using Costa Rica as a base, and the tensions were very high between the two countries. No successful movements towards peace were made until Oscar Arias Sanchez was elected to the presidency in 1986 on a platform promising to fix the problem. After the attempted Contadora peace agreement had failed, Arias decided to take it upon himself to construct a peace plan for the area.

Reviews Table of Contents Search within this book at Google Print The introductory chapter brings together a large body of material that applies directly to understanding riodinid butterflies in general. The taxonomy, distribution, and natural history of each taxon is discussed in detail. The author also provides sections on ecology, evolution, behavior, symbioses with ants, caterpillar acoustical calls, systematics, collecting and preserving, hostplant relationships, and the comparative diversity of riodinid butterfly faunas. A section on butterfly biologists of the last century provides a historical perspective to the basis of our understanding of Neotropical butterflies. Review: "Invaluable to anyone studying the butterflies of the Neotropics." New Scientist Endorsement: "A massive storehouse of superb natural history. For butterfly collectors and naturalists generally, there are excellent pieces about the study of natural history, conservation in the neotropics, and the preservation of biological diversity. New students and seasoned scholars alike will find generous suggestions of research projectseven in the individual species accounts."Henry S. Horn, Princeton University Table of Contents Subject Area: Shopping Cart: For customers in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Asia, and Australia

91. Coffee History And Growing Regions Of Costa Rica

http://www.aventura-cafe.com/costarica-eng.htm
History of Costa Rica Coffee
C offee was brought to Costa Rica during the late eighteenth century. Its arrival was discrete, but definite. Coffee cultivation expanded slowly and with the perserance that great work demands, throughout the Central Valley. The brotherhood of coffee farmers gave way to the spirit that made Costa Rica the first Central American country to establish coffee as an industry. T he first export to Panama, in 1820, became the groundbreaking activity that changed the course of the lives. In 1832, Costa Rica was already exporting quality coffee to Chile where it was re-bagged to be sold to England under the brand of “Café Chileno de Valparaíso”. I t was in 1843, when a group of visionary exporters undertook the complex task of exporting coffee directly to London. Thanks to William Le Lacheur Lyon, captain of the English ship, “The Monarch” it was possible to transport several one hundred pound bags to Europe that helped Costa Rican coffeee become world-renowned. T he growing and trading of coffee changed the face of this humble colony. The country was modernized and young Costa Rican intellectuals could now continue their studies in Europe and return as doctors, engineers and entrepreneurs contributing to the improvement of Costa Ricans’ lifestyle.

93. Costa Rica: Geological History And Climate
Review of geological and climatic processes affecting costa rica.
http://www.angelfire.com/bc/gonebirding/geoclime.html
Costa Rica Geological History: Not long ago, geologically speaking, Costa Rica did not exist. A mere 50 million years ago, this narrow mountainous strip of land was part of the ocean floor, along with the rest of the Central American isthmus between Guatemala and Colombia. Although that may sound like a long time back in earth's history, the dinosaurs had already disappeared some 15 million years previously. Currently, most geologists assume that from 40 million years ago until within only the past three million years what are now Costa Rica and its neighboring countries were then a volcanic archipelago. Using the theory of plate tectonics-which suggests that the earth's crust is fragmented in a number of sections that fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, though they are not stationary-the formation of Costa Rica's land mass is explained by its position at the western edge of the so-called Caribbean plate which is moving westward and overriding the Cocos plate located in the Pacific Ocean. As these two chunks of crustal material collide, the rocks of the Cocos plate are pushed downward, subjecting them to increased heat and pressure that eventually turns them into molten rock under great pressure. Because the downward thrust is at an angle to the east, when the pressure build-up finally becomes too much and the lava and steam move back upward towards the surface, they do so beneath the western edge of the Caribbean plate. The result is volcanism.
