With their neighbors, Costa Ricans share the Spanish colonial heritage, a developing economy traditionally dependent on the export of coffee and bananas, and a close but occasionally troubled relationship with the United States. Costa Ricans also face many of the same questions confronting small nations throughout Latin America and the developing world, such as defining the role of government in combating poverty, providing education and other public services, and conserving biodiversity. The Postal Service at Costa Rica
HISTORY OF THE POSTAL SERVICES
The link between the born of the postal services and the men history is given with the fact that man is a social being and in consecuence, he was creating through the ages a complete system to break the isolation of the first ages of the humanity and built a system that today, compose all the societies in a global vision, product of the globalization in the communications media and the technologic advance, like the satellite television. That which occurs now in Europe or Asia we can see and listen here in Costa Rica, almost at the moment. We must do a brief journey through the evolution of this concept of the communication between the human beings and that bring the born of the postal service. First was the talked message. The oral tradition begining at the early centuries of man and help as fundament to preserve the memory of an age in which the language beginning to articulate in the small human groups. Going to the writing, that become to formalize and to do less perishable the memory of the oral tradition, clay tablets, animal skins, stone tablets, were used to write the primigeny history. In Egypt, one of the most antique civilizations, the dynasties had a postal system, in which the Pharaoh and the powerful priestly class, sent their messages through the Empire. The greeks used the carrier pigeons to send the results of the Olympic games. Marco Polo told us how Genghis Kan sent his courier by horseman through Europe, and horseman must make a daily journey no less than 250 miles. At Middle Age there was a Postal Service between the Hanseatic League and the Paris, Upsala and Bologna Universities. The first public postal service was inaugurated in Cataluña and called "Troters".

ADVERTISING INFORMATION - History C hristopher Columbus and his crew were the first Europeans to lay eyes on the shores and forest-covered mountains of Costa Rica. On the great Admiral's fourth and final voyage to the Americas, in he anchored near what is now the port city and provincial capital of Lim n. His brief dealings with the native people he met on the mainland were apparently good-natured, yet this benevolent interaction was not to be the norm during the centuries to come. Columbus landed in what is now Costa Rica , on his fourth voyage to the New World. He named the area Costa Rica (Rich Coast). Some say because of the beauty he found there. Some say because he'd heard rumours of gold. Be that as is may, he was right in the first instance and wrong in the second. It was quickly discovered that there was comparatively little gold, but the natural beauty of Costa Rica has been attracting settlers ever since the initial colonization.

A photographic journey into Costa Rica between 1910-1940s. My Great Grandfather is sitting, while his son's work. My grandfather is the youngest. This site is in memory of my mother's family Fernando Rudin Hefti, son of Juan Rudin Iselin, Professor and Astronomer who emigrated from Switzerland to Costa Rica. My great uncles Max and Alberto Rudin took hundreds of stereo photographs of Costa Rica in the early 1900's. I have scanned them and put them in some sort of order. I hope sharing these photos with historians and family will be of some help. All images are thumbnails, to expand just click on them and they will expand to full view. Use your back button to return to the thumbnails. I spent many days in the small farm house on this cliff at our family farm in Tivives. I brought my wife here on our honeymoon in 1974. It was to this farm my grandfather sent me to learn Spanish on my return to my homeland in 1960s, it was either learn Spanish or go hungry. Civilization has now reached this part of Costa Rica, never again will I ride the train from San Jose to the depot outside of our farm and ride horses for hours to reach the farm. Never again will I sit on a horse at sunset and watch the cattle silhouetted against the moon. Never again will I sit on the porch and read Tarzan paperback books by candlelight. Never again will I be so totally at peace with nature. Richard H. Acrivos, Old Fort, North Carolina

Costa Rica History and Culture
History Human habitation of Costa Rica dates from at least 5000 BC, but in comparison with the great civilizations of pre-Columbian America the Native Americans of Costa Rica were neither numerous nor highly developed. When confronted by Spanish soldiers and missionaries, they resisted violently. Those who did not succumb to the epidemics that swept over the Isthmus either died fighting or fled to remote areas of the country. Culture Costa Rica, with a relatively small Native American population, has been strongly influenced by the culture and traditions of Spain. Native American and African American influences have had relatively little impact. The Roman Catholic cultural pattern of Spain, with emphasis on the family and the church, has evolved into a national style of life. Festivals in honor of patron saints are a colorful part of village and town life. The guitar, accordion, and mandolin have traditionally been the most popular musical instruments, and the music reflects a Spanish heritage. Traces of the Native American culture survive in designs used in jewelry, leather goods, and clothing. The national sport is soccer.

Brief History of Costa Rica
Back before Columbus discovered the "New World", what was to become Costa Rica was very different from its neighboring regions. As you will see, this is a difference that continues all the way to modern times. To the north you had the great civilizations of the Aztecs and the Mayans, and to the south in South America you had the mighty Incas. Because of Costa Rica's central position, one would think that it would flourish as a part of a major trade center, but that was not the case. Actually, Costa Rica was very isolated and sparsely populated. The major reason for this is the geography. Costa Rica is something like a bottleneck, with mountains that reach as high as 13,000 ft separating marshes, swamps, jungles and rain forests on either side. It was safer and easier for traders to bypass the place all together and go by sea instead. If you add to this the lack of precious metals, what you come up with, is a place with only five small indigenous groups living in the area by the time the Spanish arrived. The population of the region at the start of the 16th century was no more than 35,000. The five separate groups were: the Barucas of the central and southern Pacific side, the Bribri of the southern area and, into what is now Panama, the Caribs along the Caribbean coast, the Corobicis in the northern plateau, and finally the Chorotegas in the Nicoya Peninsula area. Today there are a few small reservations in Costa Rica holding the remaining descendants of these groups.

History
Back in the 16th century, when the Spanish explorers arrived in what today is called Costa Rica, all they found was a region scarcely populated by several poorly organized tribes. The indigenous people lived in quite autonomous groups and were probably not more that 200,000 in total. Since the indigenous communities had very little power when the Spanish arrived, the Spanish settlers has had a great influence over the country's history. Directly related to this phenomenon is the fact that when the Spanish arrived, they brought with them many diseases that killed the few native people that existed. The area was named Costa Rica (the rich coast) by Columbus when he arrived. The natives he encountered were all so friendly and wore lots of gold. In the 1560's colonization was taking place. The first colonial settlement in Costa Rica was Cartago. It was situated in the central highlands because of its rich and fertile soil, and not along the coast as with many other colonial settlements.

But only as late as 1565 Spain completes the conquest of costa rica. costa rica is part of the CapitanateGeneral of a href=guatemala.htm
http://www.electionworld.org/history/costarica.htm
In 1502 the Caribbean coast of what is now Costa Rica is discovered by Spain. Setlement begins in 1522 and in 1530 Costa Rica becomes part of the Capitanate-General of Guatemala inside the Vice-Royalty of Mexico. But only as late as 1565 Spain completes the conquest of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is part of the Capitanate-General of Guatemala . In 1821 the area becomes shortly independent as the Province of Costa Rica . Costa Rica is incorporated into Mexico . In 1823 it becomes a constituent state of the Central American Federation as the Free State of Costa Rica Costa Rica secedes from the federation in 1838 and becomes independent. In 1847 Costa Rica is renamed State of Costa Rica , followed in 1848 by Republic of Costa Rica . The country is dominated by civil disorder and conflict between conservatives and liberals. Costa Rica becomes a presidential parliamentary democracy in 1894. The conservative Rafael Anselmo José Yglesias Castro becomes president. In 1902 Ascensión Esquivel Ibarra of the Partido Unión Nacional (National Union Party, PUN) wins the elections. The PUN rule is continued by Cleto de Jesús González Víquez (1906-1910) and Romualdo Ricardo de Jesús Jiménez (1910-1914). The elections of 1914 lead to the presidency of Alfredo González Flores. Between 1917 and 1919 Federico Tinoco rules the country as a dictator, but democracy is restored in 1919. This leads in 1920 to the presidency of Rafael Julio del Rosario Acosta García.
