[edit this] [Upload image] Unlike many of their Central American neighbors present-day Costa Ricans are largely of European rather than mestizo descent; Spain was the primary country of origin. Few of the native Indians survived European contact; the indigenous population today numbers about 29 000 or 1% of the population. Descendants of 19th century Jamaican immigrant workers constitute an English-speaking minority andat 3% of the populationnumber about 96 000. In 1502 on his fourth and last voyage to the New World Christopher Columbus made the first European landfall in the area. Settlement of Costa Rica began in 1522. For nearly three centuries Spain administered the region as part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala under a military Governor. The Spanish optimistically called the country "Rich Coast." Finding little gold or other valuable minerals in Costa Rica however the Spanish turned to agriculture. The small landowners' relative poverty the lack of a large indigenous labor force the population's ethnic and linguistic homogeneity and Costa Rica's isolation from the Spanish colonial centers in Mexico and the Andes all contributed to the development of an autonomous and individualistic agrarian society. An egalitarian tradition also arose; this tradition survived the widened class distinctions brought on by the 19th century introduction of banana and coffee cultivation and consequent accumulations of wealth.

The predominant influence has long been European, which is reflected in everything from the official language Spanish to the architecture of the country’s churches and other historic buildings. The indigenous influence is less visible, but can be found in everything from the tortillas that make part of a typical Costa Rican meal, to the handmade ceramics sold at roadside stands. An important aspect of Costa Rica’s cultural legacy is their love for peace and democracy. The Ticos like to stand out that their nation is the exception in Latin America, where military dictatorships have long dominated politics. They take pride in having more than one hundred years of democratic tradition, and almost half a century without an army. The army was abolished in 1948, and the money the country saves by not expending in military issues is invested in improving the Costa Ricans’ standard of living, which has fostered a culture of social peace that makes it such a pleasant place to visit.

A singular pocket of premontane rain forest will greet you if you travel 19 km. (11.8 miles) north of Turrialba, winding along a mostly unpaved road through coffee and sugar cane plantations. The misty forest rises unexpectedly from the fields, exhibiting a rare sample of the natural ecosystem that once covered much of the Cartago province. What makes this pocket of forest even more rare is that it conceals and protects the excavated center of Costa Rica's most important pre-Columbian city. The ruins at Guayabo National Monument hold an air of mystery, and if you arrive early enough in the morning, you are likely to have this forgotten city all to yourself to explore. The sound of water running through aqueducts that are at least 2,500 years old and the calls of the yellow-tailed Oropendola birds (Montezuma oropendola) will greet you as you descend along a trail into the valley that was inhabited for about 2,000 years by an unidentified people. Archaeologists believe that the city's inhabitants, a population somewhere around 30,000 people, abandoned the city in the 1400's, shortly before the arrival of Spaniards to the area. No written records exist of any explorers ever finding the city, and it was not rediscovered until the 1800's when explorer Anastasio Alfaro happened upon it.

Costa Rica History People have inhabited the land, which is now Costa Rica, for at least 11,000 years. Relics left behind show the importance of Costa Rica as a bridge between North and South America. Influences from both regions can be found throughout its rich history. The northern region of Costa Rica was dominated by Chorotegas, which are believed to be related to the Maya. Many different tribesmen lived in the southern part of the region. Some of which were the Carib, Boruca, and the Corobicis. Columbus landed rear by the present day town of Limon on September 8th 1502 on his final quest to find a passage to India. Captain Gil Gonzalez organized the invasion of Costa Rica "rich coast" in 1522. His men collected enough gold to make the name "Costa Rica" stick. Juan Vasquez de Coronado founded the settlement of Cartago in 1563. Coronado organized expeditions and explorations around the country and could be considered Costa Rica's true conqueror. Even though Costa Rica's land was fertile, production and exportation of crops was difficult in Costa Rica because of the lack of native slaves, rugged terrain, mountains, and active volcanoes. The colonial times were harsh for Costa Rica. Plantation owners were forced to work their own crops. Many politicians encouraged the farming of coffee, which eventually did become a strong export for Costa Rica.

Few of the Indians survived the Spanish conquest, which began in 1563. The region grew slowly and was administered as a Spanish province. Costa Rica achieved independence in 1821 but was absorbed for two years by Agustín de Iturbide in his Mexican empire. It became a republic in 1848. Except for the military dictatorship of Tomás Guardia from 1870 to 1882, Costa Rica has enjoyed one of the most democratic governments in Latin America. In the 1970s, rising oil prices, falling international commodity prices, and inflation hurt the economy. Efforts have since been made to reduce reliance on coffee, banana, and beef exports. Tourism is now a major business. Oscar Arias Sanchez, who became president in 1986, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for his role in negotiating settlements to both the Nicaraguan and the Salvadoran civil wars. José Maria Figueres Olsen of the National Liberation Party became president in 1994. He opposed economic suggestions made by the International Monetary Fund, instead favoring greater government intervention in the economy. The World Bank subsequently withheld $100 million of financing. In 1998, Miguel Angel Rodríguez of the Social Christian Unity Party became president, pledging economic reforms, such as privatization. In 2000, Costa Rica and Nicaragua resolved a long-standing dispute over navigation of the San Juan River, which forms their border. A psychiatrist, Abel Pacheco, also of the Social Christian Unity Party, won the presidency in elections held in April 2002. In May 2003, several national strikes took place, by energy and telecommunications workers over privatization, and by teachers over their salaries.

Towards Independence Throughout the colonial period, Costa Rica remained one of the provinces ruled by the Spanish viceroyalty in Guatemala (together with the provinces of El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua). Its position as the farthest province from the crown's representative and the fact that great mineral wealth was not discovered here meant that interest in this distant territory was minimal, which in turn allowed Costa Rica to develop in an atmosphere of relative autonomy not found in the other provinces of Central America. The provincial Governors were always Spaniards appointed by the monarchy, although once settled in the new territory they inevitably set about attending to their own personal interests rather than those of the province and its colonists. This practice was by no means limited to the province of Costa Rica but was apparently commonplace throughout the New World colonies, which lead to much discontent among the colonists.

Recorded history tends to begin with Christopher Columbus, who stayed for 17 days in 1502, and was so impressed by the gold decorations worn by the friendly locals he promptly dubbed the country Costa Rica, 'the rich coast'. Despite the lure of untold wealth, colonisation was slow to take hold and it took nearly 60 years for the Spanish settlers to make a dent in the tangled jungle. Once the process had started, however, Costa Rica, like its similarly-colonised neighbours, suffered the effects of European invasion. The indigenous population did not have the necessary numbers or organization to resist the Spanish, and their populations dwindled quickly because of susceptibility to European diseases. Adding to its initial ignominy, the hoped for hoards of gold never materialised and Costa Rica remained a forgotten backwater for many years. The 18th century saw the establishment of settlements such as Heredia, San José and Alajuela but it was not until the introduction of coffee in 1808 that the country registered on the radars of the 19th-century white-shoe brigade and frontier entrepreneurs looking to make a killing. Coffee brought wealth, a class structure, a more outward-looking perspective, and most importantly independence.

Costa Rica's history is one of triumph of peace over hostility, thus the tranquil laid back atmosphere in this country. Studies done in Costa Rica confirm that civilizations had settled in this region 10,000 years ago, well before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors. Many indigenous civilizations, now disappeared, made Costa Rica their homes, and left mysteries and marvels for the future generations. One of this wonders are hundreds of perfect rock spheres, ranging from baseball-sized ones to huge car like rocks, found throughout the west coast Gold and Jade objects are other treasured items left behind by ancient civilizations, now they can be appreciated in museums around the central valley. More recently, some indigenous ruins have been found around the central valley, discovering a very sophisticated system of waterworks and canals, as well as other magnificent and sometimes mind boggling constructions. By the time the Columbus arrived, there were four major indigenous tribes living in Costa Rica. The east coast was the realm of the Caribs, while the Borucas, Chibchas, and Diquis resided in the southwest. This populations were not numerous to begin with, and when the Spaniards came nearly finished them all, some fled, while many others perished, none the less many settlers established colonies in Central America and Mexico, that finally won their independence from Spain on 1821.

COSTA RICA: HISTORY
The first European explorer to encounter Costa Rica was the Christopher Columbus. In 1502 Columbus landed off the coast during his fourth voyage to the New World. His arrival was welcomed and treated with with great hospitality by the indigenous peoples who had never seen white men before. A late explorer by the name of Gil Gonzalex Davila would name the area Costa Rica (Gold Coast) after observiing locals wearing gold in their ears and noses. While Columbus assumed he had discovered a New World, archaeologists today know that people lived in the region of Costa Rica for thousands of years prior to the arrival of the Spanish. One interesting mystery of the region relates to thousands of round granite balls found on the western coast. The size of these balls range from very small to the size of a small car! Recently the ruins of an ancient city was found in the vacinity of San Jose. Throughout the country discoveries of quality jade and gold work has also been found. Of interest to many relates to the sites found in the Nicoya Peninsula that show influence of both the Olmec and Nahuati civilizations.
