The hydrography of Costa Rica is of utmost importance. Indeed, so substantial is the amount of hydroelectric power produced by the country that it can cover not only its own energy needs but is able today to export electric energy to other neighbouring countries.

Costa Rica News, November 2004
Geography
Costa Rica is an extremely varied country despite its tiny size, which at 51,100 sq km is almost half the size of the state of Kentucky in the USA, two-thirds the size of Scotland or the same size of Switzerland.
On either side of the volcanic central highlands lie coastal lowlands, which differ greatly in form. The smooth Caribbean Coastline is 212km long and is characterized by year-round rain, mangroves, swamps and intracoastal waterways, sandy beaches and small tides. The Pacific Coast is much more rugged and rocky. The tortuous coastline is 1016km long, with various gulfs and peninsulas. It is bordered by tropical dry forests that receive almost no rain for several month each year, as well as by mangroves. Swamps and beaches. Tidal variation is quite large and there many offshore islands.

Geography
Costa Rica is situated to the south on the Central American land bridge between Nicaragua and Panama. It is roughly the size of the state of West Virginia, or roughly a bit larger than the county of Los Angeles . At it¢Â€Â™s widest point it is not quite 170 miles and at it¢Â€Â™s narrowest just under 80 miles. The country contains a mountain range that stretches from the northwest border of Nicaragua all the way down the center and on into Panama . At it¢Â€Â™s highest point, Mount Chirripo, it reaches up to nearly 13,000 feet. The Central Plateau sits right in the middle of the country at a height of about 3,200 feet. On the Pacific side there are two prominent peninsulas. The larger and northern of the two is Nicoya with a large gulf of the same name. The Osa Peninsula is south, almost on the border of Panama, and also has a gulf but it¢Â€Â™s name is Dulce. An interesting geographical feature of the Gulfo Dulce is that at its farthest point from the ocean it drops straight down over 750 feet. It is one of the few places on earth that you find the really jumbo shrimp. On the Carribean side, the northern area of Tortuguero is basically a big, lowland jungle with canals and waterways snaking their way throughout. Top Destinations In Costa Rica

The geography of Costa Rica
Overview
Costa Rica is a small country located in the southern part of the Central American isthmus. It's bordered on the north by Nicaragua, and on the southeast by Panama. On the northeast is the Caribbean Sea, and to the west and south is the Pacific Ocean. At its widest point, it measures 300 km (180 miles) across. In total size, its 50,700 sq km (20,000 sq mi) makes it a little less than half the size of Kentucky, and about two-thirds the size of Scotland. But despite its size, Costa Rica is incredibly diverse.
The provinces
Costa Rica is divided into seven "provinces." All but one (Guanacaste, whose capital is Liberia) have a capital city of the same name. Four of the capital cities are located in the Meseta Central, the central plateau that is home to most of the country's 3.5 million people. Five of the provinces spread out from the Meseta like spokes on a wheel. The provinces are:

The United Kingdom's National Curriculum as well as the United States' national content standards in geography, social studies, science and technology made it clear that students should be using real-world tools in the same hands-on manner as scientists would to solve real-world problems. Learning in the classroom should reflect learning in the workplace. Because GIS was created as a problem-solving tool, it finds a natural home in such a curriculum. The GIS interface has become more user friendly, and computing power has increased, making it more accessible to broader audiences worldwide.

    THE LAND
Destination content © Christopher P. Baker, used from Moon Handbooks Costa Rica, 5th edition. Photo by Adrian Hepworth The region is a crucible. There are few places in the world where the forces of nature so actively interplay. Distinct climatic patterns clash and merge; the great landmasses and their offshore cousins, the Cocos and Caribbean plates, jostle and shove one another, triggering earthquakes and spawning sometimes cataclysmic volcanic eruptions; and the flora and fauna of the North and South American realmsas well as those of the Caribbean and the Pacificcome together and play Russian roulette with the forces of evolution. The result is an incredible diversity of terrain, biota, and weather concentrated in a country barely bigger than the state of New Hampshire. At 50,895 square kilometers, Costa Rica is the second-smallest Central American nation after El Salvador. At its narrowest point, in the south, only 119 km separate the Caribbean from the Pacific. Even in the north one can savor a leisurely breakfast on the Caribbean and take an ambling five-hour drive to the Pacific for dinner. At its broadest point, Costa Rica is a mere 280 km wide. On the ruler-straight eastern seaboard, barely 160 km separate the Nicaraguan and Panamanian borders. And while the Pacific coast is longer, it is still only 480 km from the northernmost tip to the Panamanian border as the crow flies. Lying between 8 and 11 degrees north of the equator, Costa Rica sits wholly within the tropics, a fact quickly confirmed in the middle of a rainy afternoon in the middle of the rainy season in the middle of the sodden Caribbean lowlands or the Talamanca mountains. Elevation and extremes of relief, however, temper the stereotypical tropical climate. In fact, the nation boasts more than a dozen distinct climatic zones. Atop the highest mountains in cooler months, even ice and snow aren't unknown. ... National Parks This is an small excerpt from Moon Handbooks Costa Rica. CentralAmerica.Com highly recommends that you enhance your vacation by taking a copy of Moon's comprehensive Handbook with you. For more information visit the

This web resource provides species-level information on the ants of Costa Rica. The basic information unit is a species web page. The page for a particular species contains images, identification tips, geography, natural history, and recommendations on how to collect the species. Linked to these species pages are various synthetic documents, such as keys and species lists. There is a genus list, which contains all the ant genera known to occur in Costa Rica, and there is a picture guide to these genera. The picture guide is not a key; for technical keys to the ant genera of the world refer to Bolton (1994) or Holldobler and Wilson (1990).
