Costa Rica is one of the oldest democracies in the Americas. The country has been noted for its friendliness and preoccupation with peace. Its policy of active neutrality has twice earned it the nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1987 this prestigious award was presented to then-president of the Republic, Dr. Oscar Arias. The World Health Organization's "The World Health Report 1995" places Cost Rica third in life expectancy in the world, behind Japan and France and ahead of Great Britain and the U.S.; and with a per capita income about one tenth of the other four. The reason: Costa Rica's medical system ranks first in Latin America and near the U.S. and Canada as among the 20 best in the world according to the United Nations. Costa Rica has 500 resident bird species; four times as many as in the temperate forests of eastern U.S.; and there are over 8,000 plant species in Costa Rica ,whereas Great Britain has 1,433. Many Costa Ricans, more commonly known as Ticos, use local landmarks to give directions or even addresses in smaller towns. Sometimes the landmark may no longer exist but because it has been used for so long, its position is known by all locals. A good example is La Coca-Cola, which is the bus terminal in San Jose where a Coca-Cola bottling plant used to be used for many years. Everyone knows this except for the first-time visitor. Costa Rica Yesterday and Today Costa Rica: A Travellers Literary Companion (VHS two tape set available through IVN Entertainment, Inc., 1390 Willow Pass Rd. Suite 900, Concord, CA 94520). Good video productions for Costa Rica are difficult to find. This video with an accompanying video on Belize provides 30 minutes of ample generic film footage with adequate narration giving the prospective traveler a fairly comprehensive overview of a country rich in beauty, culture, and history. In its images of the people and in its emphasis on Costa Rica’s history of peace, stability, and education, this video does capture a feeling for the Costa Rican's character and their reputation for friendliness. An adequate visual introduction to a country known as the "Jewel of Central America."

Costa Rica: Introduction
Background: Costa Rica is a Central American success story: since the late 19th century, only two brief periods of violence have marred its democratic development. Although still a largely agricultural country, it has achieved a relatively high standard of living. Land ownership is widespread. Tourism is a rapidly expanding industry.

Costa Rica is home to one of the oldest democracies in the Americas. The country has been noted for its friendliness and preoccupation with peace. Its policy of active neutrality has twice earned it the nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1987 this prestigious award was presented to then-president of the Republic Dr. Oscar Arias. This, the fact that over a quarter of its territory enjoys protection in the ever-growing network of national parks and reserves, its continued dedication to environmental protection, and many other reasons answer why Costa Rica has repeatedly been referred to as the Switzerland of the Americas.

Two recognized seasons; commonly called the Dry Season (December to April) and the Wet Season (May to November). We prefer to call the "wet" season the Green Season because the countryside comes alive like the springtime in temperate climates. The Atlantic coast has no well-defined dry season.

January 7, 2004 RELEASE : 04-011 New Book Captures Costa Rica In Space Photography NASA scientists and Costa Rican students have collaborated to publish a new book that captures the splendor of Costa Rica's varied landscape as photographed by astronauts from space. "Costa Rica from Space," the product of a joint effort between NASA and EARTH University in Costa Rica, captures changes over the past two decades in the environment and geography of Costa Rica. The work reveals, visually and through accompanying text, geographical, ecological, climatic, human, agricultural and urban phenomena occurring within Costa Rica, but illustrating the interdependence of all inhabitants of Earth. Aerial and ground photos supplement the photography from space. "This book builds on two strengths our unique planetary perspective as captured by space photography and the power of experience from those who live and work in the places we photograph," said Franklin Chang-Diaz, NASA astronaut, Costa Rican native and author of the book's prologue. "From these two perspectives, knowledge of our planet is given to those who are entrusted with protecting it."

    Introduction

emonstrating an environmental sensitivity unparalleled elsewhere, Costa Ricans have set aside one quarter of their land as protected areas and national parks. Ecotourists are rewarded with botanical and animal marvels found nowhere else on Earth. Although Costa Rica is best known as an invaluable refuge for nature, this small nation is also a haven of peace. Location, Geography, Climate Costa Rica is the penultimate link in a chain of small nations that together comprise the isthmus of Central America. Along with the Caribbean and the Pacific, the country's borders are defined by Nicaragua to the North and Panama to the South. Located at the nexus of two continents and two oceans, this confluence of land and water makes the region one of mother nature's great bottlenecks. Here, geography constricts a breathtaking amount of plant and animal life within a modest 19,563 square miles (50,900 sq. km), an area comparable in size to Denmark or West Virginia. Within this diminutive nation is found an astonishing five percent of the world's biodiversity, including more than 800 species of ferns, 1,000 of orchids, 2,000 kinds of trees, and 200 species of mammals. Both coastlines of Costa Rica have an abundance of beaches, though the Pacific strands are generally both less developed and less spacious. Between the coasts, the interior of the country is shaped by four

Geography of Costa Rica T he country is divided by a backbone of volcanoes and mountains, an extension of the Andes-Sierra Madre chain which runs along the western side of the Americas. Costa Rica has four distinct cordilleras or mountain ranges Guanacaste and Tilaran in the north, Central and Talamanca in the south. Costa Rica is part of the Pacific "Rim of Fire" and has seven of the isthmus's 42 active volcanoes plus dozens of dormant or extinct cones. Earth tremors and small quakes shake the country from time to time. The last major quake hit on April 22, 1991. Centered on the Caribbean side southeast of San Jose, it measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. The country's highest point is Mt. Chirripo (3,797 meters). The capital, San Jose, and the neighboring major cities of Alajuela and Heredie lies in the middle of the Meseta Central (Central Valley). Almost two-thirds of the nation's population live in this small, fertile valley. The Pacific coastal plain is much narrower than its Caribbean counterpart. Both coasts are lined with white and black sand beaches.
