Location Costa Rica, the southernmost of the five republics that comprise Central America extends approximately from eight to eleven degrees north latitude and between eighty-three and eighty-six degrees west longitude. According to the latitudes mentioned, Costa Rica is located practically in the center of the inter-tropical zone 10° north of the equator. This zone is also referred to as the "Hot Zone", due to its prevailing warm temperatures throughout. It is also located on the North American Continent, on the Central American Isthmus. It is six hours west of Greenwich, Costa Rica borders with present-day Panama (which was a province of Colombia until 1903). This border issue went unresolved for many years, with Costa Rica claiming as part of its territory the littoral of Chiriqui Lagoon. Later, however, to end the dispute, Costa Rica and Colombia submitted the matter for French President Loubet to decide, but he suggested an equivocal border that failed to resolve the issue. Once Panama was established as a republic, the matter was submitted to the Chief Justice of the United States, Edward Douglas White, who presented his verdict on September 12, 1914. It pleased the Costa Ricans but was not altogether satisfactory to the Panamanians. Hotel List

[edit this] Costa Rica is situated to the south on the Central American land bridge between Nicaragua and Panama. It is roughly the size of the state of West Virginia, or roughly a bit larger than the county of Los Angeles . At it’s widest point it is not quite 170 miles and at it’s narrowest just under 80 miles. The country contains a mountain range that stretches from the northwest border of Nicaragua all the way down the center and on into Panama . At it’s highest point, Mount Chirripo, it reaches up to nearly 13,000 feet. The Central Plateau sits right in the middle of the country at a height of about 3,200 feet. On the Pacific side there are two prominent peninsulas. The larger and northern of the two is Nicoya with a large gulf of the same name. The Osa Peninsula is south, almost on the border of Panama, and also has a gulf but it’s name is Dulce. An interesting geographical feature of the Gulfo Dulce is that at its farthest point from the ocean it drops straight down over 750 feet. It is one of the few places on earth that you find the really jumbo shrimp. On the Carribean side, the northern area of Tortuguero is basically a big, lowland jungle with canals and waterways snaking their way throughout.

How the West was Won:
Why the jet set heads west
Santa Ana, Escazú, Cariari, Airport, Ciudad Colon
San José's stylish western suburbs offer the best shopping and services. The airport, the drier climate and great highway access are culprits in making this the most popular area among foreign residents and multinational corporations.
The East Side: The Cool Side of town
San Pedro, Moravia, Curridabat, Lomas Ayarco The east side is San Jose´s more laid back side and offers a better price structure plus a wide range of property styles. The higher elevation makes it cooler and affords spectacular views in certain areas. There is a lot of new development taking place in Zapote, Curridabat and along the highway towards Cartago. This area is ripe for investment and development.
The Bedroom Communities - Central Locations
To the west and north of downtown San José lie these popular bedroom communities. You are in the center of everything and have the advantage of some of San José's most prestigious and historical addresses.

The country is divided by a backbone of volcanoes and mountains, an extension of the Andes-Sierra Madre chain which runs along the western side of the Americas. Costa Rica has four distinct cordilleras or mountain ranges Guanacaste and Tilaran in the north, Central and Talamanca in the south. Costa Rica is part of the Pacific "Rim of Fire" and has seven of the isthmus's 42 active volcanoes plus dozens of dormant or extinct cones. Earth tremors and small quakes shake the country from time to time. The last major quake hit on April 22, 1991. Centered on the Caribbean side southeast of San Jose, it measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. The country's highest point is Mt. Chirripo (3,797 meters). The capital, San Jose, and the neighboring major cities of Alajuela and Heredie lies in the middle of the Meseta Central (Central Valley). Almost two-thirds of the nation's population live in this small, fertile valley. The Pacific coastal plain is much narrower than its Caribbean counterpart. Both coasts are lined with white and black sand beaches.

Costa Rica History Geography Climate Services Culture Geography The Cordillera de Tilarán runs into the Cordillera Central, which includes the famous Volcán Poas (2704 meters) and Volcán Irazu (3432 meters), both of which are semi-active volcanoes lying at the center of national parks named after them, and Volcán Barva (2906 meters), which is in Parque Nacional Braulio Carillo. The most south-easterly mountains are associated with the Cordillera de Talamanca which is higher, geologically older, more remote and more rugged than the other ranges. About 16 separate peaks reach in excess of 3000 meters, the highest being Cerro Chirripó (3820 meters). Changing altitudes plays an important part in determining geographical, climatic and ecological variation. The Central Valley In the center of the highlands lies the meseta central (the Central Valley), which is surrounded by mountains (the Cordillera Central to the north and east, the Cordillera de Talamanca to the south). It is this central plain, between 1000 and 1500 meters above sea level, which contains four of Costa Rica's five largest cities, including San José, the capital. Over half the population lives on this plain, which contains fertile volcanic soils. The Caribbean and Pacific Coasts On either side of the volcanic central highlands lie coastal lowlands which differ greatly in character. The smooth Caribbean coastline is 212 kms long and is characterized by year-round rain, mangroves, swamps, an intercoastal waterway, sandy beaches and small tides.

Costa Rica Geography: Redesigning Room#16
Objectives:
  • Students will become familiar with the geography of Costa Rica. Students will apply previous map skills. Students will actively simulate the geography of Costa Rica.
Materials:
  • Teacher will need:
    direction note cards border signs
    tape mountain signs
    direction signs
    mile markers Students will need:
    Costa Rica handbooks and pencils
Introduction:
  • Explain that in order to study Costa Rica, we need to immerse ourselves in the country. In order to do so, we will have to turn our room into the country. Our first step is to do the geography of the country.
  • Sequence of Instruction:
  • Tell students that they will be put in groups for this activity. Each group will receive a note card with a direction that they are to carry out as a group. When they are finished with their direction, they are to go back to to their seats and wait for the other groups. Give students 5 - 10 minutes and give extra assistance to groups as needed. When groups are finished, have each group present their direction and what they did to the room. Ask the group to explain their reasoning. As a group decide where the capital should go. Place the capital marker where the class decides where it should be.

Costa Rica is the seat of the University for Peace as well as the Interamerican Court of Human Rights. This fact empathizes the trust placed in the country's political and social stability by the international community. Costa Ricans are characterized by three distinct cultural life styles; that of the peasants and farmers of the Central Valley, of the inhabitants of the plains of Guanacaste and of the Caribbeans of the Province of Limón Population:3,834,934 (July 2002 est.)
