Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Costa Rica is a Central American success story: since the late 19th century, only two brief periods of violence have marred its democratic development. Although still a largely agricultural country, it has achieved a relatively high standard of living. Land ownership is widespread. Tourism is a rapidly expanding industry. Costa Rica Geography
    Scenic and Ecological Wonders

Costa Rica seems to have it all - one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, abundant animal life, and the most hospitable people you will ever encounter. So much inside a small package centered between Nicaragua and Panama, and the Caribbean and the Pacific Oceans, Costa Rica is only 200 miles long. A series of volcanic mountain chains runs from the Nicaraguan border in the northwest to the Panamanian border in the southeast, splitting the country in two. In the center of these ranges is a high-altitude plain, with coastal lowlands on either side. Over half the population lives on this plain, which has fertile volcanic soils. See a map here Visionary Leadership Advances Conservation
After abolishing its army in 1949, Costa Rica's visionary leaders diverted military funds into a leading-edge conservation strategy: constitutional guarantees to a healthy and ecologically balanced environment. Private and public agencies were solicited to invest in the large-scale protection of the country's natural resources. The result is that some 12 percent of the land is now secured in national parks, and another 16 percent is protected in private nature and forests. The Ministry of Natural Resources guarantees as much as 90 percent of the country's biological diversity will be protected.
Nearly 10 percent of the world's species of plants and animals (more than in Europe and North America combined) thrive in a country roughly the size of West Virginia. More than 850 species of birds, 209 species of mammals , 163 species of amphibians, 200 species of reptiles, 366,000 species of arthropods, and more than 13,000 species of plants, including 1,500 species of trees and nearly 1,500 species of orchids are supported by Costa Rica's rich ecosystem. Costa Rica's History
    Early Society Embraced Peace

When Columbus arrived on the coast of this Central American nation in 1502, there were probably no more than 20,000 indigenous people in Costa Rica. He found several autonomous tribes, all with distinct cultures and customs.
The Indians gave Columbus gold and he returned to Europe with reports of a plentiful supply of the yellow metal. But the adventurers who arrived later to cash in confronted hostile local people, hot and swampy coastlines and rampant disease, conditions that for decades drove would-be colonists away.
In 1562, Spain's administrative center in Guatemala sent Juan Vasquez de Coronado to Costa Rica as governor and Cartago was established as the capital the following year. With no Indian slaves to work the land, the settlers were forced to work the land themselves, scratching out a meagre subsistence by tilling small plots. The impoverished colony grew slowly and was virtually ignored by the Spanish rulers in Guatemala. By the late 18th century, the settlements were stabilized, and exports of wheat and tobacco were making economic conditions somewhat better.
Independence Leads to Sweeping Political Changes Central America gained independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. The news reached Costa Rica a month after the event. The question of whether Costa Rica should join newly independent Mexico or join a new confederation of Central American states resulted in a bitter quarrel between the leaders of San Jose and their counterparts in Cartago and Heredia. A brief civil war in 1823 was won by San Jose and Costa Rica joined the confederation.

Golf C osta Rica - Geography Costa Rica, meaning "rich coast" in Spanish, has a land area of 51,100 square kilometers and is slightly smaller than Switzerland, a country with which it is often compared. Its 3.5 million inhabitants (an average population density of 67 people per square kilometer) are ethnically homogenous but live in a country that varies greatly from one area to another. In the north the Rio San Juan forms most of the 300-kilometer-long border to Nicaragua. The border to the south and southeast separates Costa Rica from Panama. The vast La Amistad National Park is shared by the two countries and spreads out on both sides of the border. The 200-kilometer-long Caribbean coast is to the east and the 1,000-kilometerlong Pacific coast is to the west. Topography Costa Rica can be divided into three major topographic areas: The Cordilleras (mountain chains), which are of volcanic origin, the alluvial Caribbean Lowland Plains and the hilly Pacific Region.
