Student Life
The oldest and best known university in the country, Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) offers a wide range of subjects and faculties. More than 30,000 students attend UCR, and the university boasts a large international student community as well. The campus offers extensive sports facilities, arts venues, and beautiful grounds.
Housing
Each IFSA-Butler student studying at UCR lives with a carefully selected host family. Because most of the culture of Latin America revolves around the extended family, living with a host family is one of the best ways to immerse yourself into the culture and language of Costa Rica. The program fee includes three meals per day.
Courses
UCR offers a good variety of subjects and faculties and allows students to cross-register in different departments. Particularly strong are literature and social sciences. No matter which courses you pursue at UCR, you'll also take a required Spanish language course arranged by IFSA-Butler. All coursework is in Spanish.

The incredible flora and fauna diversity, the people, the beaches, and the landscape all converge on Costa Rica. Who could imagine that there would be so many reasons for booking your Costa Rica vacation rental early?
    Costa Rican Culture
Probably the most pronounced feature of Coast Rican culture is its friendliness and hospitality, a great asset for vacationers. With a democracy government, standing out in Latin America, Costa Ricans love peace. Not having a military means that Costa Ricans can benefit from a higher standard of living. Costa Rica is racially diverse, which permeates the culture from its cuisine to its handicrafts to its music. Its European influence shows in its architecture and official language. Consider vacationing in Costa Rica to be able to really mix with the crowd and socialize!
Costa Rica Key Areas The Northern Pacific region welcomes tourists with traditional demonstrations and those from folklore, with bull riding a popular one. Enjoy the wide variety and numerous beaches of white or gray sand, with various degrees of surf quality. Photography is a very common activity that captures the full range of landscape including caves, dry forests, and volcanoes. Guanacaste has superior dive sites, and the sportfishing not only caters to casual vacationers, but there also are a number of record-breaking tournaments held.

Costa Rica is located in the Central American isthmus, bordered by Panama to the south and Nicaragua to the north. One of the most developed countries in Latin America, Costa Rica has long been famous for its tradition of peaceful democracy. Costa Ricans also enjoy the highest standard of living in Central America, a 95% literacy rate, and the greatest overall advancement in the social and economic spheres. For this reason, it is an ideal location for language and culture study. Intercultura, the base for the Raymond Walters College Costa Rican study abroad program, is located in the colonial city of Heredia, approximately 20 minutes by bus from the capital city of San Jose. Originally it was known as the city of flowers. The tranquility and natural beauty of the mountains is only a few minutes away. Applicants must be students in good standing and must enroll for the three credit hour course for participation in the program. In addition, students should be in good physical health and capable of substantial walking (several hours) in the course of a day. Enrollment is limited to a maximum of 15 students. Intercultura Language School offers a series of 18 courses designed by curriculum specialists, using interactive small groups in an environment of total immersion in Latin American culture. Classes are 4 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Our professors are university trained and credentialed to teach Spanish as a second language. We give all teachers further instruction on teaching in the context of total cultural immersion. Academic credit through several accredited US university programs is available (e.g.. USM, Austin College, and Duke University). CAMPUS LOCATIONS
    HOMESTAY
A key element of our educational approach is the opportunity to stay with carefully selected Costa Rican families, matched to the needs of the student. The homestay includes two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) with supportive people who assist the student in daily interactions, and sometimes even help with homework! Students at the beach campus may choose to live either in local homestays or in shared accommodations at the luxury hotel.

The predominant influence has long been European, which is reflected in everything from the official language Spanish to the architecture of the country’s churches and other historic buildings. The indigenous influence is less visible, but can be found in everything from the tortillas that make part of a typical Costa Rican meal, to the handmade ceramics sold at roadside stands. An important aspect of Costa Rica’s cultural legacy is their love for peace and democracy. The Ticos like to stand out that their nation is the exception in Latin America, where military dictatorships have long dominated politics. They take pride in having more than one hundred years of democratic tradition, and almost half a century without an army. The army was abolished in 1948, and the money the country saves by not expending in military issues is invested in improving the Costa Ricans’ standard of living, which has fostered a culture of social peace that makes it such a pleasant place to visit.

Our volunteers say they feel a world away, but somehow they also feel right at home. Why? Because Costa Rica is a land that is known for its beautiful landscapes and peaceful attitude. Our volunteers are greeted with open arms and smiles from the local people we call Ticos . The colorful dancing and music draws them in closer. I approach each volunteer as a new friend and as a kind of teacher, for them to find where they might be most useful and for them to learn about the community and the culture of my country.
