Costa Rica's Culture
Progressive Values and Attitudes

Known as the "Switzerland of the Americas," Costa Rica has a strong democratic tradition and a long history of dispute resolution. Owing in part to their impressive 95 percent literacy rate and national education system, Costa Ricans are a self-assured and hospitable people. The most stable democracy in Central America, Costa Rica's voting system ensures honest, secure elections. The indigenous people gained their right to vote in 1994.
Peace-Loving People Help Stabilize Region
For the past 100 years, the country has known only two very short military regimes. Following a civil war in 1948, in two of the most innovative moves in recent history, Costa Rican president Pepe Figueres constitutionally abolished the army, and limited presidents to serve one term only. Nine presidential campaigns since 1949 has produced victories for the opposition candidate seven times all with an 80 percent voter participation rate! In a region plagued by civil wars, human rights abuses, and until recently dictatorships, Costa Rica stands out as an exception. Since 1949, when the army was abolished, the country has had a fairly stable democracy. The new Constitution of 1949 included a progressive labor code, upheld a system of social security, and contained a set of social guarantees( such as a minimum wage), that gave the average citizen rights that were ahead of their time.

It's an oasis of calm among its turbulent neighbours and an ecotourism heaven, making it one of the best places to experience the tropics with minimal impact. It's also mostly coastline, which means great surfing, beaches galore and a climate built for laziness. Costa Rica's enlightened approach to conservation has ensured that lush jungles are home to playful monkeys, languid sloths, crocodiles, countless lizards, poison-dart frogs and a mind-boggling assortment of exotic birds, insects and butterflies. Meanwhile, endangered sea turtles nest on both coasts and cloud forests protect elusive birds and jungle cats.

Costa Rica culture:
Facts on government, politics and history
Costa Rica has a historical uniqueness that marks its culture, politics and people even today. Ticos, as Costa Ricans call themselves, enjoy an island of stability in a region marked by poverty and warfare. The facts speak for themselves: 96% literacy; socialized, universal medicine; 95% coverage for telephone and electricity, compared to less than 68% in the rest of the isthmus; and potable water in even the most remote communities. Below you'll find more information about Costa Rican Democracy and facts on the Costa Ricans.
Costa Rica Culture: Political System
Costa Rica has a constitutional democracy with a unicameral Legislative Assembly directly elected in free, multiparty elections every four years. Dr. Abel Pacheco of the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC) won the 2002 presidential election in an historic runoff. He won the runoff by a wide margin, but the legislature is severely divided. The PUSC won 19 of 57 Legislative Assembly seats and their traditional rival, the National Liberation Party (PLN), won 17 seats. But the big surprise was the Citizen’s Action Party (PAC), which won 14 seats and the Libertarian Party, which won 6 seats. The Costa Rican Renovation Party (evangelical) has 1 representative.
Costa Rica Facts: Major Political Parties
The two major parties are centrist, with the ruling PUSC inclined to the Christian democratic right and the opposition PLN tilted to the moderate Social Democratic left. Party leaders; however, tend to blur these policy and ideological differences. Moreover, Costa Rican emphasis on consensus pushes most governments toward the ideological center. The minority parties are currently hold an important faction in the Assembly, with neither major party enjoying an outright majority.

In recent times, one of the most prominent political figures has been Oscar Arias Sanchez of the Partido de Liberacion Nacional (PLN) who was elected president in February 1986. The following year, Arias was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in bringing warring parties elsewhere in Central America to the negotiating table. Arias stood down prior to the 1990 national elections, which were won by Rafael Angel Calderon, candidate of the rival Partido Unidad Social Cristiana
Government
Under the constitution of 1949, executive power is vested in the President, supported by two Vice-Presidents and an appointed Cabinet of Ministers. The President is elected for a 4-year term by universal adult suffrage (voting is obligatory), conditional on one candidate receiving more than 40 per cent of the vote. Legislation is the responsibility of the 57-member National Assembly, which is also elected for a 4-year term of office.

Consulates Culture Food History News Sports Costa Rica’s culture and History Costa Rican cultural activities range from going to the theater, museums, libraries, and sports events in the urban are of San Jose and its surroundings to more traditional “fiestas” in the rural areas. Football (soccer) is the favorite pastime of the majority of Ticos, and fans are avid and fiercely loyal to their teams. When “La Sele,” (the country’s National Team) plays, people watch the games at the stadium, home, in parks, and giant screens downtown. Whenever La Sele wins a game, ticos pour out onto the streets in celebration. A large percentage of the population is Roman Catholic, the country’s official religion, thus religious activities during the year conform most of the Costa Rican holidays. Some of them are the pilgrimage to Cartago to honor “La Virgen de los Angeles,” Virgin of the Angels, Costa Rican’s Patron Saint, held yearly on August 2nd; and the festivities during Holy Week (Easter), which include parades, masses, and family reunions where special Easter meals are shared. Several towns throughout Costa Rica have their own festivals, fairs, and carnivals, where you can enjoy “topes” (horse-back riding parades), “corridas de toros” (rodeo bull-chasing), good

SFS IN NICARAGUA
As part of our Language, Culture and Society of Costa Rica course (LS 205E), Costa Rica semester students spend one week of the program on a field expedition to Nicaragua. The main objective is to take advantage of our students' newly acquired field skills and knowledge at the midpoint in the program to contrast and question some of the models we are seeing in Costa Rica. Nicaragua is a country that resembles, at first glance, the stereotype of an underdeveloped country. Meanwhile, Costa Rica, a country that is developing rather quickly, is starting to experience more of the problems that developed countries face. This trip to Nicaragua is an incredible opportunity for SFS students to cross political borders and study and work in a comparative cultural, ecological, and economical laboratory. LS 205E Language, Culture and Society of Costa Rica (2 credits) contains two distinct but integrated modules. The Spanish language module offers listening, oral and written practice of the Spanish language at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of proficiency. Students will engage in oral and written grammar and vocabulary exercises; and develop Spanish language skills and tools required for their research projects. The socio-culture module helps students develop a more refined understanding of Costa Rican culture and the various communities with which we work. Students participate in lectures, field exercises and other activities including a homestay - all of which teach them strategies and skills for working with people in a community-based research context and help them to assist with community extension projects.
