Francisco Vasquez de Coronado
Born: 1510 Died: 1554
Spanish Explorer
Major Accomplishment
He discovered the southwestern part of the United States, including the Grand Canyon.
Early Life
Hello. I am Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. I was born in Salamanca, Spain. I left home because my parents promised the family fortune to my older brother. In 1535, I sailed to Mexico with Antonio de Mendoza, the colony’s first Admiral. I became one of the governors of New Galacia (one of the Spanish colonies in the New World).
Searching for the Seven Cities of Gold
Between 1536 and 1539, Admiral Mendoza heard stories about the Seven Cities of Cibolo, the Seven Cities of Gold where the streets and houses were made of gold and jewels. He sent me on an expedition to find them and claim the wealth for Spain. In 1540 I set out with 300 soldiers and about 1,000 Indians. I led my army into what would later become Arizona and New Mexico. I found and captured a settlement of Zuni Indians, which I considered to be the city of Cibolo. I found no sign of riches.
Searching the Southwestern United States
Some of my army camped in the villages of Cibolo and some made separate trips to find the cities of gold. We visited the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. We were the first Europeans to travel up the Rio Grande. We found many Indian settlements and discovered the Grand Canyon. My army spent the winter of 1540 in Tiquex, a Pueblo village on the Rio Grande.

CONQUEST OF AMERICA: The dramatic story of exploration, conquest and colonization of North America
Narrated by Emmy® Award winning actor Jeffrey Wright, the four-part epic adventure saga airs March 28 and 29 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The History Channel
Some came seeking incredible riches. Others sought an elusive sea passage to the Orient. Still others, personal glory. CONQUEST OF AMERICA, a four-part special presentation, tells the story of the exploration of North America through the words of the men who undertook the journeys. CONQUEST OF AMERICA airs Monday, March 28 and Tuesday, 29 at 9:00 – 11:00 ET/PT on The History Channel.
Emmy-Award winning actor Jeffrey Wright narrates the special.
CONQUEST OF AMERICA is an epic saga full of great adventures, foolish quests, unspeakable cruelty, unimaginable bravery and an unquenchable thirst for glory and riches. It is a story of lost cities of gold, legendary sea passages to China, religious wars, national pride, mutiny on the high seas and uprisings in unfamiliar lands. CONQUEST OF AMERICA is a story of European politics and intrigue. Wars fought over religion and trade in the Old World will have dire repercussions for colonists, conquerors, and conquered an ocean away.
Each episode of CONQUEST OF AMERICA crystallizes the conquest of a different geographical region of North America by focusing on a primary explorer in that territory: Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in the Southwest; Pedro Menendez and Jean Ribault in the Southeast; Henry Hudson in the Northeast; and Vitus Bering and Nicolai Rezanov in the Pacific Northwest. These stories play like amazing action-adventure tales, taken from the explorers' own journals, and the letters and writings of eyewitnesses. Dramatic dialog and scenes throughout are derived from the historical records; diaries of Europeans, and the oral histories of Native American participants.

THE SPANISH EXPLORATION WESTWARD
D uring the late medieval period, the Mediterranean Sea was dominated by several powers: Venice and Genoa in Italy, the Islamic powers of Turkey and Egypt and to a lesser degree by such powers as the Knights of Rhodes. Trade in materials, spices, foods, slaves, etc. was commonplace. Endemic too were piracy and warfare between theso-called Christian powers and those of Islam. On the Islamic side too we ought to note that overland caravans from the far East travelled regularly across central Asia into the Levant, bringing such rarities as silk and teas and spices, then sold to Venetians for export to Europe at profit.
The maritime powers on the Atlantic were all too aware of the dominant position thatthe Italian middlemen played in selling such goods to Latin Christendom. In an attemptto find a new route to Asia and its material wealth, the sturdy Portuguese had for over half a century sailed down the west coast of Africa, discovering in the process gold, pepper, ivory and other natural resources as well as a staggering array of different peoples, animals and plants. Thanks to Bartholomeu Diaz and Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese finally rounded the treacherous waters of the Cape of Good Hope and sailed into the Indian Ocean, ultimately reaching India, China and Japan. Since the Portuguese colonized, fortified, mapped and organized their profitable trade routes in that direction, the Spanish and other Atlantic Ocean European powers had little choice but to look westward. Already by 1500, some Portuguese had landed in what we now call Brazil for stopovers on their long African voyages.

The Nature Conservancy Purchases Prime Prairie Chicken Property
(August 6, 2004) – The Nature Conservancy announced today the planned acquisition of the 18,500-acre Creamer Ranch, a place long recognized as the epicenter of the state's lesser prairie chicken core population. The ranch, which has more than 40 lesser prairie chicken leks or breeding display grounds an extraordinary density was purchased from Roy and Shirley Creamer. Located near Milnesand in eastern New Mexico, the Creamer Ranch also provides habitat for the sand dune lizard, another threatened species that is endemic to the area. "We applaud the actions of Roy and Shirley Creamer who had the foresight to preserve the property," said Bill Waldman, the director of the Conservancy's New Mexico program. "Ninety percent of prairie chicken habitat in New Mexico is on private lands. Many ranches in this area are being converted to center pivot irrigation so it was especially important that this land be protected." "It's the best chunk of prairie chicken habitat around," says Gary Bell, the Conservancy's director of conservation science. " There are only two remaining patches of grasslands where you can find the lesser prairie chicken. One is in the Kansas-Oklahoma panhandle and the other is in the eastern New Mexico - west Texas area. When you look at these two areas you'll find that the Creamer Ranch is the motherlode for prairie chickens."
