Polarimetric radar imagery acquired over corn fields around Ottawa suggest that regardless of polarization, very limited within field information related to corn crop condition is contained in the SAR imagery once the corn canopy reaches a height of about one metre. When the crop reaches this height and biomass is substantial, the SAR signal saturates. This signal saturation appears to be a problem for all the linear (HH, VV, HV) and circular (RR, RL) polarizations. However, when the imagery is acquired early in the growing season, significant within field variability can be detected (Fig.1 SAR image) . Although the greatest contrast is present in the linear cross-polarization (HV) and the circular co-polarization (RR), within field patterns are visible in all polarizations (Fig.2 Chart) . The RR and HV polarizations are both sensitive to canopy volume scattering.

124. Frequent Rains Prevent Planting Of State's Corn (04-15-2005)
When corn is planted late, other crop planting schedules also must be adjusted. Being late with this corn crop has put everything happening at one time,

Frequent rains prevent planting of state's corn
By Bonnie Coblentz MISSISSIPPI STATE Rains every few days across much of the state have kept corn producers out of the field and are threatening to prevent much of the crop from being planted on time. Erick Larson, small grains specialist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, said U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics show the crop only 50 percent planted by the week of April 10. "We have essentially not planted any corn the first two weeks of April. This is the time Mississippi growers normally plant the bulk of our corn crop," Larson said. "The planting has been delayed by widespread rainfall events occurring every four to six days." Depending on the soil type, farmers generally need five to 10 days of dry weather before they can go back into a field to plant. The problem with late planting is that crop development is pushed later into the summer when drought stress is more likely to reduce yield potential. "We are in dire need of two weeks of dry weather so farmers can finish up planting what corn we intend to," Larson said. "It's getting marginal enough in terms of recommended corn planting dates that growers may be forced to plant alternative crops which can be planted later."

Around The Web Drought stressing crops in Iowa By TIM HOSKINS, For Lee Agri-Media

BETTENDORF, Iowa - The lack of snowfall this past winter was a forewarning for one Eastern Iowa farmer.
Harvey Klindt, who farms with his brother, Don, in Scott County, thought if the weather pattern of little precipitation didn't change, it would spell disaster this summer. "Unfortunately, my worse fears were confirmed," he said.
Klindt and other farmers in Scott, Clinton and Muscatine counties are in an extreme drought, according the National Weather Service in Davenport. The extreme drought extends into northwest and west central Illinois.
A moderate to severe drought exists east of a line from Ottumwa to Cedar Rapids. According to the National Weather Service, the area has received 9.81 inches of precipitation this year through July 20. That is 11.49 inches below the normal of 21.30 inches for the same time.
"That is quite a lot to make up," said Klindt.
