How To Identify Black Bear Damage
  • visual observation of the bear causing damage; evidence of bear tracks, feces, hair, or other sign (Figure 6); presence of somewhat circular patches within the field's interior where stalks have been pulled inward and flattened or broken (Figure 7); ears of corn that are completely eaten or cleaned of kernels, but not all ears on a stalk will be affected. More plants may be damaged than are actually consumed (Figure 8); damage occurring at the "milk-stage" of development.
Figure 6: Bear Footprint Care must be taken to distinguish damage caused by bears from that of other potential predators. Raccoons frequently will pull down stalks, strip ears from a stalk, and chew kernels from an ear; the large circular patches of damaged corn in a field usually are lacking with raccoons and less total area will be affected when compared with bears. Other animals, such as porcupines, deer, beaver, and even coyote, may cause damage to corn. Stalks may be chewed and felled (beaver, porcupine), ears and silk are often nipped (deer, coyote), or whole plants may be removed (beaver). The group also demanded for appropriate actions and punishment to all those responsible for such and a complete halt in the entry of GMOs in the country, stating its immense threat to food security, the people's sovereignty, the environment and human health. The farmers gathered in Marbel, South Cotabato and marched toward Barangay Maltana, Tampacan town and uprooted Bt corn crops covering about ¼ hectares in protest of the on-going field trials.

Graphics: Jiang Long The people of Oaxaca, Mexico have been cultivating corn for nearly 10,000 years. During that time, corn varieties have developed through traditional breeding methods to both enhance nutrition and provide insurance against an unpredictable environment. The success of these varieties has established corn as the centerpiece of the Mexican landscape, diet, and culture. Many of the corn varieties we use today can be traced back to this region. In recent decades, recombinant DNA technologies have facilitated a radical transformation of the way corn is bred and cultivated. These changes may lead to a profound impact on the way of life in Oaxaca. Biotechnologists can use numerous methods to insert designer genes from a variety of organisms into plant genomes. A transgenic or genetically modified (GM) plant produced this way may have genes added to improve flavour or nutrition, but most transgenes are designed to improve resistance to insects or herbicides. A number of safeguards to stem transgene escape have been implemented or proposed. Biotech companies are developing transgenic crops that have additional genetic alterations that produce sterile pollen, while hybrid seedlings can be programmed to self-destruct (a.k.a. "suicide seeds"). Farmers may be able to reduce the spread of rogue transgenic plants by separating their transgenic crops from their traditional crops, or ensuring that their traditional seed banks do not become contaminated with transgenic seeds. Governments can play a role by licensing, monitoring, and policing the cultivation of GM crops to reduce the likelihood of unwanted hybridizations.

Biotech Companies Broke Law When Planting Crops
Violations Raise Questions About Compliance Elsewhere For the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took enforcement actions against two biotechnology companies whose plantings of experimental genetically engineered crops were found by EPA inspectors to violate the law. That August 5 crackdown was hailed by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), which today said that EPA should conduct more frequent inspections of genetically engineered crops to ensure that biotech companies comply with regulations designed to protect human health and the environment. In one case, Mycogen Seeds, a unit of Dow AgroSciences, failed to isolate its experimental insect-resistant corn with a border crop of hybrid corn and failed to plant trees to act as windbreaks. In the second case, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, a DuPont subsidiary, planted its experimental corn crop at an unapproved location too close to other crops. Both companies’ violations were in Hawaii and uncovered by EPA Region 9 inspectors. The provisions violated are designed to protect neighboring corn crops from breeding with the experimental biotech crops. The two corn crops at issue are engineered to be resistant to the pest corn rootworm by using genetic material from bacillus thuringiensis , a bacterium. Such crops—referred to as “Bt corn”—produce their own pesticide, reducing the need for spraying with conventional chemical pesticides. Corn rootworm destroys millions of dollars worth of corn each year.
