    by Nancy M. Davis
During a week-long seminar for copy editors at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies last March, Cynthia L. Decker, 37, excused herself to take a call from her boss at The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch. Decker, a copy-desk veteran, came back ecstatic with news of her promotion to assistant features editor. The announcement momentarily cheered colleagues who were debating the advantages and disadvantages of their often-underrated careers. Usually the last journalists to handle stories, copy editors serve as "fresh eyes," check facts, make corrections, enforce style, write headlines, set tonevital skills in a time of sagging newspaper credibility. Yet many copy editors sense that managers overlook their contributions when promotions open up. And that's just one of their frustrations. After years of adapting to pagination and surviving staff restructuring, downsizing, redesigns and tacked-on new-media responsibilities, many copy editors in St. Petersburg concluded that the critical copy-editing function demands reappraisal by, and renewed appreciation from, editors and publishers alike.

How Papers Can Find and Retain Copy Editors

http://www.copydesk.org/words/ASNEFebruary.htm Glamann, Hank
ACES
The American Copy Editors Society wondered what papers were doing to address this problem, whether editors felt that the academic community should do more to feed the pipeline, and what the industry was doing to encourage people to enter the field. The study was administered by copy editor Carrie Camillo of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis. With the support of her paper and its editor, Tim McGuire, she produced a 33-page report that is the most comprehensive work available on the subject. This column is taken from Camillo’s report. The Care and Feeding of Copy Editors
By Gina Acosta and Amanda Traughber
for the American Copy Editors Association
Copy editors can maximize the performance of their intems and new hires if they recognize that inexperienced editors thrive on guidance, trust and a sense of belonging. That may sound straightforward enough, but former interns and new hires revealed specific ways slots coaxed out their best work or, in some cases, how rookies wish they had been encouraged. Former intern and new hires reported that their best slots reached beyond the goings-on of the desk to bring out the best in rookies. Guidance is the first step to bringing new editors up to speed on what you expect of them and the other editors on your desk and what standards your newspaper has set. Some new editors' suggestions:
  • Write a mission statement for your desk that outlines the desk's and the newspaper's goals.
  • Have new copy editors adequate training and orientation. It is difficult to learn the ropes if you can't even hang on. Create a copy flow chart. On it, follow a slug from beginning to end and list the chain of command. Identify the people they should talk to about stories, page layouts, art, etc. (One new copy editor said it would help to have a nightly chart, too.) Better yet, introduce new editors to the people they'll deal with most. And if it's not possible to assign another copy editor to sit with trainees on their first night, at least provide cheat sheets. Shortcut commands for the computer are a must!

Signage Without Copy Editors
The NY Times Metro section tackles the world of mis-spelled signs, mostly by immigrants , even titling the article, "The Grate American Dreem." The article dips into the sociological waters of the American immigrant experience, namely the New York one, with pockets of so many different cultures, but all of them prone to some funny misspellings. As Gothamist has trouble with the English language ourselves, we found the story charming, because our experiences are certainly informed by the signs we see on a daily basis. Like knowing that the pizza place that serves "lazange" when we need it. The above photograph was taken by Rachelle Bowden at the Port Authority . Bloggers Writing Books; Demand For Copy Editors Rises
Yes, the blogosphere is built on mentioning other bloggers and giving them credit for slight, inconsequential things - blogfucking , we believe it's called. Still, we were surprised to see the New Yorker engaging in this kind of thing. In this week's issue, Daniel Radosh interviews ambitious ICM agent, Kate Lee , who he credits with "sifting through sloppy thinking, bad grammar, and blind self-indulgence for moments of actual good writing" when reading blogs [Disclosure: Gothamist met with Kate Lee last year, but, as we're prone to do, we got distracted by some other ... stuff ]. The only redeeming quote in the story comes from TMFTML , our favorite player-hater in the blogosphere: "what the fuck would I write about?" Au contraire, anonymous friend, Gothamist would definitely part money from our cold, dead hands to read a book by you, as long as there was a Marion Ettlinger photograph on the back.
