Bloggers versus Copy Editors
Posted by The Happy Tutor John Emerson at See the Forest makes some interesting observations about the role of blogging in highlighting stories, that are run, but buried, in the WB Press. Often the tiny, barely mentioned detail is the suppressed key to the tale, as when the NY Times mentions, decorously, torture enemas The most interesting film you could shoot today about news, would require following the camera crew at it passes the freedom pens around Bush speaking events. Film CBS, ABC, CNN, not filming the suppression of democracy. Then edit in sound bites of the President talking about Freedom to cheering Dupes. The montage would be more truthful and telling than anything we see between dog food commercials on TV news. The casters of news, as of spells, or sand in the eyes, are part of the story, and should be outed. Bloggers are not journalists, but journalists aren't either. For mainstream news, there are market tested scripts and formulas. You can, as Emerson mentioned, emulate Izzy Stone and still get a lot of value out of them. That's largely thanks to the what's left of the journalists' professionalism a quality that's nearly "value neutral", in my opinion. The upstream editorial staff ensures the eventually published story fits the newspaper's guidelines. Raw, fact based news isn't exciting and won't hold the consumers' interest.

COPY EDITORS
Copy Editors proofread all the written material that goes into magazines, books, newspapers, and web sites. There are also Scientific, Technical, and Medical (STM) Copy Editors. The job of Copy Editor can be divided between proofreading and cleaning the text of writers. Proofreading requires a complete knowledge of grammatical rules, spelling, and various copy editing marks. The good Copy Editor can also cut out the fat in a manuscript, suggest changes for clarity, and work with a writer to produce a better product. Copy Editors are needed and esteemed members of a team that includes writers, editors, and graphic artists. If you have any questions about careers in copy editing don't hesitate to ask! AARGH, COPY EDITORS!
Prompted by this post by Norman Geras, the bloggers at Crooked Timber have been having fun at the expense of the petty tyrants who insist on reworking perfectly good writing for the sake of their silly rules. Read here here , and here . (Apparently the copy editors were highly offended by the original post, judging from this apologetic followup on Normblog.) Copy editors sometimes do improve writing. But, as often as not, the profession selects for people who demonstrate their superiority by knowing rules no one else knows. My favorite copy editing stupidity: At the NYT, you are not allowed to use the verb design to describe anything that is not physical. You have to say devise . Hence this lovely sentence in my most recent column: "In subsequent research, he and Professor Mayzlin are working with a company to compare results from two types of buzz marketing: a campaign concentrated on opinion leaders selected by marketing executives and a campaign devised by the two professors to emphasize dispersion." That is not a graceful sentence. But all the copy editor cared about was getting ride of "designed." Thanks to reader George Jong for the tip.

Re: Copyreading 1. I define copyreading as the fastidious and methodical word-by-word check of copy for spelling, grammar, syntax, conformity of style, ascertainable factual errorsuch as middle initials, titles, trade-names, whether figures add up, etc. It is a vital second check on taste, libel, general accuracy and clarity. It is an important first check on understandability: the copyreader is a kind of first test reader, protecting the subscriber against over-expertise on the one hand and writing down on the other. The copyreader is also the desk man who ushers a story into print. He follows a story from edition to edition, sometimes from page to page, through the various mutations of new leads, inserts, ads, fixes, changes in heads, etc. He guards not only against reporter and editor error but against composing room error, continually checking galley proofs, page proofs, and the edition just off the press. He worries about such details as the spacing of sub-heads, the making of 8 pt. fixes, the accuracy and relevancy of cut lines. His most noticeable creative role is the writing of heads, and it is interesting that this is one of the most under-developed arts on The Post, in my opinion.

MESSAGE TO FELLOW ACADEMICS ABOUT TO PUBLISH Dear colleagues, Don't let publishers and copy-editors bully you into accepting their often stupid and distorting changes to your text. Insist that you will not allow your paper to be included in their books and journals unless you have the ultimate say on what the content is, and no copy editor should be allowed to make any change without asking you first. Too many of them are both ignorant of the subject matter and slavishly committed to following out of date stylistic rules that may be relevant to literary essays written a hundred years ago but have no relevance to modern scientific and academic communication. You may be afraid to resist them because too often job applications, tenure or promotion depend on numbers of publications, but if we all put our foot down, publishers will start to conform. It's your work: don't let them spoil it and waste your time. Aaron Sloman

The report will be discussed at the opening general membership meeting at the APSE convention in Baltimore on June 28, and at a workshop immediately following that session. Here is the report: One year ago at the APSE convention in Chicago, University of Texas professor Griff Singer criticized sports editors for their approach to recruiting copy editors. "You need to do it year-round," he said. "Don't wait until you have an opening and then take the first warm body." Not much has changed in the past year. Despite the demise of several of the dot-coms that siphoned many young editors from newspapers, sports editors find themselves conducting long searches to fill copy desk openings.

Getting Past Barriers to Newsroom Communication Craig Branson, ASNE While copy editors often lament that managers and others don't listen to their complaints, a San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News manager suggested Friday that those barriers to communication are sometimes created by the copy editors themselves.
This isn't done consciously, said David Tepps, an assistant managing editor of the paper. Instead, it is caused by an insular culture on the copy desk.
One way to get beyond this, he said, is to talk to people on other desks rather than use the electronic messaging system. He argued that such systems create barriers between the editors and the rest of the newspaper, which operates largely through person-to-person contact.
