Back to the Social Studies Lesson Plan Menu Title of Lesson: Unite the School Grade Level: Subject Area: Multicultural/Interdisciplinary/Social Studies Instructional Goal: To increase and celebrate the cultural diversities of our campus. Submitted By graphic goes here Rationale Supply List Learning Strategies Communicate Results ... Career Connections Rationale: Fly every nationality's flag that is represented by students attending that particular school and then start the fun of learning together! World Flag Database: http://flags.mmcorp.com/ Performance Objectives: Schools are "melting pots" of nationalities. The students in each school spend about 185 days together each year and need a peaceful atmosphere to "live" and learn at school. Respecting each other is important. Peer group pressure is a big problem. This interdisciplinary school project will help unite the feelings and make each student feel a very special part of their school. This project would be a great beginning of the school "opener" for students and their teachers. History, geography, art, music, drama, homemaking theater arts, physical education, computer, language departments and math are all integrated into this project. There are lots of "challenges" integrated into the project "Unite the School" and very many directions for creativity. Every teacher will work with her classes to brainstorm the possibilities of each concept that has been suggested by that teacher. Nationalities represented by the students at the school must be identified. Contacts through the Internet established easily by e-mailing and using the World Wide Web. "Sister Schools" are identified and contacts for student e-mailing are made. Each student should have a foreign-culture e-mail partner from one of the countries represented by the study. The teachers may want to establish other foreign-culture "teacher resources" as well.

They will also develop problem-solving abilities through their interactions with group members. Goals: Students will solve a problem by communicating with their group members in a foreign language. Students will focus more on the content of their discussions and less on the language, and as a result, they will learn how to use language to fulfill their needs. They will come to see, first hand, the usefulness of lanugage. Materials: Problem sheet, broken up into individual facts than can be distributed to group members (written in the foreign language, not in English). Activities: 1. The class is broken into groups of 5.

    According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM; 1991), learning environments should be created that promote active learning and teaching; classroom discourse; and individual, small-group, and whole-group learning. Cooperative learning is one example of an instructional arrangement that can be used to foster active student learning, which is an important dimension of mathematics learning and highly endorsed by math educators and researchers. Students can be given tasks to discuss, problem solve, and accomplish. Cooperative learning activities can be used to supplement textbook instruction by providing students with opportunities to practice newly introduced or to review skills and concepts. Teachers can use cooperative learning activities to help students make connections between the concrete and abstract level of instruction through peer interactions and carefully designed activities. Finally, cooperative learning can be used to promote classroom discourse and oral language development. Wiig and Semel (1984) described mathematics as "conceptually dense." That is, students must understand the language and symbols of mathematics because contextual clues, like those found in reading, are lacking in mathematics. For example, math vocabulary (e.g., greater-than, denominator, equivalent) and mathematical symbols (e.g., =, <, or >) must be understood to work problems as there are no contextual clues to aid understanding. In a cooperative learning activity, vocabulary and symbolic understanding can be facilitated with peer interactions and modeling.

    Introduction: Volume 10: Time to Reflect The Connection Between Cooperative Learning and Authentic Assessment Assessment in ESOL: The Haiian Multi-Service Center Experience Overcoming Cultural Barriers of a Job Interview ... Review: Phenomenal Change: Stories of Participants in the Portfolio Project A ssessment. Evaluation. The words conjure images of tests: sharp #2 pencils, rows of bubbles to be darkened-in, quiet rooms with perspiring test-takers and only the sound of rustling paper. I'm learning, along with my learners, to replace these dated images with a reality that conforms more with my values about teaching and learning. We're learning to use authentic, learner-centered tools which integrate assessment into the cycle of teaching/learning. We're learning to use assessment as a tool for self understanding and instructional planning. There are other, equally-dated images I can conjure from my educational experiences: straight rows of wooden desks, one behind the other; a teacher's desk facing the rows of students; a teacher, talking, talking, and writing on the broad expanse of a blackboard, occasionally calling upon a student to supply an answer, with luck the correct one.

    COLLABORATIVE VERSUS COOPERATIVE LEARNING- A COMPARISON OF THE TWO CONCEPTS WHICH WILL HELP US UNDERSTAND THE UNDERLYING NATURE OF INTERACTIVE LEARNING By Ted Panitz I have been searching for many years for the Holy Grail of interactive learning, a distinction between collaborative and cooperative learning definitions. I am getting closer to my elusive goal all the time. I believe confusion arises when people look at processes associated with each concept and see a certain amount of overlap or inter-concept usage. I will clarify the definitions of collaborative and cooperative learning first by presenting my definitions of the two terms and reviewing those of other authors who have helped clarify my thinking and second by presenting and analyzing the educational benefits of collaborative/cooperative learning techniques. The following will serve as a starting point for this discussion. A basic definition of the terms collaborative and cooperative, reduced to their simplest terms, is presented: Collaboration is a philosophy of interaction and personal lifestyle where individuals are responsible for their actions, including learning and respect the abilities and contributions of their peers;

    Abstract
    Cooperative learning can be defined as a range of concepts and techniques for enhancing the value of student-student interaction. The article begins with separate discussions of how cooperative learning promotes effective instruction of thinking skills and creativity, and of information technology. Thinking skills and creativity are promoted when students interact with their peers to brainstorm, explain, question, disagree, persuade, and problem-solve. Cooperative learning offers many tools for structuring this type of thinking interaction. Educational applications of information technology are enhanced by peer interaction in cooperative learning groups, as students can engage in peer tutoring, model effective behaviours, communicate electronically, and take on a range of roles while working at the computer. Next, the authors describe a content-based writing lesson for secondary school students in Singapore in which cooperative learning is integrated with thinking and creativity, and with information technology. Explanations are provided of how key cooperative learning concepts are embodied in the lesson. Materials used in the lesson are made available.
