COOPERATIVE LEARNING
IN MODERN LANGUAGES
Welcome to my page on cooperative learning in the Modern Language class and thank you for visiting. There are many activities here for you to enjoy. All of the small group cooperative materials are yours to use freely in your language class - I believe in sharing with others what it has been my good fortune to learn. Please enjoy! It took a little while to create these materials and behind the words and the thoughts you see on your screen is the person who placed them there. I would love to hear back from you either through the guest book or by you dropping me a line when you have the time. My name is Pete Jones and I used to teach French at Anderson Collegiate in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. Whitby is about 30 miles east of Toronto. This June 2002, I retired after having taught French for almost thirty years. I had the opportunity over the past several years to play with cooperative learning. The links below will provide you access to materials I have either developed or learned about to get this instructional strategy up and running in the Modern Language class. Each of the titles below has a brief explanation of the activity.

http://www.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/CoopLear.html#team Cooperative learning is a generic term for various small group interactive instructional procedures. Students work together on academic tasks in small groups to help themselves and their teammates learn together. In general, cooperative learning methods share the following five characteristics: Students work together on common tasks or learning activities that are best handled through group work, Students work together in small groups containing two to five members, Students use cooperative, pro-social behavior to accomplish their common tasks or learning activities, Students are positively interdependent. Activities are structured so that students need each other to accomplish their common tasks or learning activities, and Students are individually accountable or responsible for their work or learning. Learn about the principles of cooperative learning and discover resources for integrating cooperative models into the classroom. Co-Directors Roger T. Johnson

How to Differentiate Instruction How to Plan For Differentiate Instruction After having read what the research has to offer on differentiated instruction, specifically, brain-based research on learning, learning styles and multiple intelligences, and authentic assessment, you are now ready to plan. Step 1- Know Your Students Determine the ability level of your students. This can be done by surveying past records of student performance to determine capabilities, prior learning, past experiences with learning, etc. Survey student interests. It is also important to get to know your students informally. This can be done by an interest inventory, an interview/conference, or asking students to respond to an open-ended questionnaire with key questions about their learning preferences (depending on the age group). Is behavior management a problem?

Susan Johnson Lesson Plan Subject: Language Arts Lesson Plan Title: Poetry Co-op The lesson plan: Poetry Co-op Purpose: Cooperative learning techniques familiarize class with dozens of poems. Procedure: After lesson and test on poetic devices and figurative language, I assign each student one poem. I group the poems according to theme: love, death, war, nature, etc. Each group (4 or 5 in a group) discusses all the poems in their group to determine what theme they all have in common. They also must decide how each poet treats the theme differently and come up with reasons why. Then each group presents their poems and leads the class in a discussion. They are required to read their poems aloud and use some kind of visual aids. (One group wore berets and brought in real coffee for a coffeehouse setting.) After all groups are finished, each student writes a critical analysis of his/her poem. When finished, each student has studied his or her own poem in great depth, the poems in his/her group in some depth, and all the other poems in the class briefly.

It is not intended to describe how to lesson plan in every situation or with most software. Our Teaching Tips for individual programs (which you receive when you get the software from us) describe the many ways you can lesson plan with the specific program you have purchased from individual programs. Cooperative learning strategies require a skilled and prepared teacher ~and a knowledge of the software to be used. There are many classroom strategies for using software. This guide will help you hit the cooperative learning nail on the head. Read it, discuss it, and experiment with its suggestions. You'll find that cooperative strategies work well with certain kinds of software (not all), certain teachers and classroom set-ups. These strategies can at times help you stretch your software dollars.

The Library of Congress In Congress Assembled
Continuity and Change in the Governing of the United States Overview Objectives Lessons Acknowledgements Overview This unit includes four lessons using primary sources to examine continuity and change in the governing of the United States. Lessons one and two are focused on a study of the Constitution and Bill of Rights and provide access to primary source documents from the Library of Congress. Lesson three investigates important issues which confronted the first Congress and has students examine current congressional debate over similar issues. Lesson four features broadsides from the Continental Congress calling for special days of thanksgiving and remembrance. The first three lessons are intended for middle and high school students. Lesson four provides a historical context for elementary school lessons that focus on celebrating national holidays. The unit also includes extension activities for each lesson which may be developed as classroom activities or individual research projects. The lessons do not prescribe specific teaching methods. The primary source documents along with suggested focus questions may be used in a variety of ways, including Socratic seminars, cooperative learning, or individual or group work.
