In 1881, Vermonter Chester Alan Arthur was sworn in as the nation’s 21st president. The son of an impoverished Baptist minister, Arthur was born in a small temporary parsonage. He became a lawyer who advocated for civil rights and, as president, championed civil service reform. Today, a visit to the reconstructed homestead offers a pictorial portrayal of Arthur’s life and political career. MORE

About the Artist
Chas Fagan is a portraitist, sculptor and a landscape painter. His only formal art training came at the age of ten when he was selected for a special series of lessons by the Hungarian portraitist Ilona Karolyi Szecheny. Otherwise, he studied the work of the great masters in European museums while growing up in Belgium. Mr. Fagan's prominence has grown through numerous exhibits, published paintings and public installations of his sculpture. However, it was further heightened when he became known as the artist who painted the complete

President Coolidge's Burden
A recent biography places Coolidge's failed presidency in the context of the deep depression he fell into after the death of his son sychohistory has tended to be psychoanalytical history, the application of Freudian concepts to historical figures. This approach has come under fire for reducing motives to drives and the real conflicts of history to intrapsychic conflicts among the holy trinity of ego, id, and superego. Fifty years ago psychoanalytic theory and therapy dominated the culture. No more. The revolution in American psychiatry from the Freudian to the medical paradigm has given historians the basis for a fresh approach to psychology. Instead of focusing on posited conflicts between instinct and repression, they now tend to examine observable psychiatric illness rooted in childhood events. Depression may be less interesting than neurosis, but its symptoms are more open to empirical validation. And whereas neurosis is rarely disabling, depression stops you cold.
