  • About Forbes
The Coolidge Collection The Coolidge Collection was established in 1920, when Calvin Coolidge gave documents and memorabilia to Forbes Library. Coolidge continued giving materials to the Library throughout the remainder of his life. At the end of his administration, he sent his personal library from the White House to the Forbes Library, in Northampton, Massachusetts; included were the well known Howard Chandler Christy portraits of Calvin Coolidge and his wife, Grace, and the infamous electric horse. The final impetus for the permanent home of the Coolidge Collection came in 1956. Acting upon the request of Grace Coolidge and the Trustees of Forbes Library, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted funds to establish a "Calvin Coolidge Memorial Room" as a separate entity within the library. Today, Forbes Library is the largest existing source of primary material on Calvin Coolidge and the only public library in the United States to hold a presidential collection.

Beautiful setting on a secluded lake near Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, NY. Swimming, boating, 5 miles of canoeing, and hiking right out your door. Surrounded by NYS Forest Preserve. More recreation plus sightseeing, theater, shopping and restaurants in area. White Pine Camp is one of the Adirondack Park's most outstanding "Great Camps" - rustic yet elegant retreats built by wealthy families at the turn of the century. Built in 1907 and expanded in 1911 by William Massarene and Addison Mizner, White Pine Camp is unique in its "pre-modern" yet rustic architectural style, extensive landscaping, and interesting history. It was owned by a number of prominent families and served as President Calvin Coolidge's Summer White House from July 7-September 18, 1926. From 1949 to 1983, under institutional ownership, the camp experienced serious abuse and neglect, then a 10-year holding action. Recently purchased by a private group, the camp is now mostly restored and open to the public for cabin rentals, historic tours, and special events.

The Coolidge Homestead by Mimi Baird [click on photographs to see larger versions] T he Coolidge Homestead is an important component of the activities of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation. It is also the centerpiece of the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site in Plymouth . The house was the setting for many significant events that affected the life and times of Calvin Coolidge. He moved there when he was four. T he character of young Coolidge was formed in this house. The shyness that followed him over the years became apparent. He would enter the house after completing a chore and, upon hearing the voices in the kitchen, would immediately dread having to meet people and engage in conversation. Wrenching sadness entered Calvin’s life at 12, when his mother, Victoria Josephine Moor, age 39, died in March of 1885. Calvin, his father, Col. John Coolidge, and sister Abigail were at her bedside. "The greatest grief that can come to a boy came to me. Life was never to seem the same again." O n March 6, 1890, at the Homestead, while Calvin was at Black River Academy in Ludlow, his sister, Abigail, 14, also died. "I am having a very good time this spring but will be glad when I can go home and be with you. It is lonesome here without Abbie."

Biography
Coolidge was "distinguished for character more than for heroic achievement," wrote a Democratic admirer, Alfred E. Smith. "His great task was to restore the dignity and prestige of the Presidency when it had reached the lowest ebb in our history ... in a time of extravagance and waste...." Born in Plymouth, Vermont, on July 4, 1872, Coolidge was the son of a village storekeeper. He was graduated from Amherst College with honors, and entered law and politics in Northampton, Massachusetts. Slowly, methodically, he went up the political ladder from councilman in Northampton to Governor of Massachusetts, as a Republican. En route he became thoroughly conservative.

COOLIDGE, CALVIN
, thirtieth president of the United States. Coolidge presided over an era of governmental frugality and probusiness policies that were popular at the time but later regarded as misconceived. Born in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, Coolidge graduated from Amherst College in 1895 and three years later established a law practice in Northampton, Massachusetts. A conservative Republican, he rose rapidly in politics, serving successively as city councillor and solicitor (1899-1902), state legislator (1907-1909), mayor (1910-1911), state senator (1912-1915), lieutenant governor (1916-1918), and governor (1919-1921). In 1919 he gained national prominence by intervening to restore order during a Boston police strike and in 1920 was the surprise nominee of his party for vice president. Coolidge was noted for his cautious reserve, public taciturnity, and pronounced frugality, but he was also a competent administrator, a skillful manipulator of the media, and a man devoted to career and family. In 1927 Coolidge announced that he would not run for president again, and in March 1929 he returned to Northampton. There he busied himself with writing his autobiography and a daily newspaper column entitled "Thinking Things over with Calvin Coolidge."
