Winston-Salem, North Carolina, John F. Blair Publishers, 1999, 284 pages, $15.95. This guide to presidential sites should be an important contribution to the study of American presidents and a handy companion to the traveler with an interest in presidential history. Since presidential libraries were only begun with the modem presidents Herbert Hoover to the present it is not easy to find information in one book on earlier U.S. presidents, where they lived, and sites associated with their life. The National Parks Service has information on over 30 sites, but the rest are run by state agencies and organizations or non-profits. Therefore, information is not easily accessible for the scholar or tourist. Thus, it was with enthusiasm that I read this guidebook by Gary Ferris.

  • President Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It broke the Treaty of 1880 with China which allowed Chinese immigrants to enter the U.S. While the Chinese Exclusion Act did halt immigration for 10 years and kept already immigrated Chinese from becoming citizens, Arthur had already vetoed a bill which would have banned any Chinese immigration for 20 years. In 1883 Buffalo Bill, who had become famous hunting buffalo to feed the crews who were laying track for the Transcontinental Railroad by the Union Pacific, organized the first of his wild west shows. These shows featured sharpshooter Annie Oakley and Sioux chief Sitting Bull. In 1883 President Arthur signed the Pendleton Act. This act reformed civil service, which was believed to be filled with politically connected individuals who didn’t really do any work. The Pendelton Act created exams for government jobs. It also created a Civil Service Commission to oversee the new competitive merit system. Chester Alan Arthur - portrait and biographical information at the White House web site.

Calvin Coolidge
Coolidge is probably best known for his statement that the "business of America is business." This reflected his position that government should interfere as little as possible with businesses and idividuals. Elected:
The Early Years
Calvin Coolidge was born at the family home adjoining the Coolidge General Store in Plymouth, Vermont. From the age of 5 to 13, Coolidge attended the local elementary school. In 1886, he enrolled in the Black River Academy from which he graduated in 1890. From 1891 to 1895, Coolidge attended Amherst College. Coolidge graduated from Amherst in 1895, after which he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1897. After Coolidge's admission to the bar he set up law practice in Northampton, Massachusetts. There, he served in various local positions including as City Council member, and City Solicitor. From 1907 to 1908, Coolidge served as of the Massachusetts state legislature. There he established a progressive record. From 1910-1911 he served as the Mayor of Northhampton. From 1912 to 1915 he served as a Massachusetts State Senator, the last year of which he was President of the Senate. In 1916-1918 Coolidge served as an activist Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. From 1919 to 1920, he served as Governor of the State. The most notable moment of his administration was his strong opposition to the police strike in Boston in 1919. He rejected an appeal to support the re-hiring of striking teachers. He stated, "there is no right to strike against the public safety by anyone, anywhere, anytime."

On June 2, 1924, President Coolidge signed a bill granting Native Americans full U.S. citizenship. Coolidge was the last President of the United States who did not attempt to intervene in free markets, letting business cycles run their course. During his Presidency, the United States experienced a wildly successful period of economic growth: the so-called "Roaring Twenties." Coolidge not only lowered taxes, but also reduced the national debt. As a result on Thursday, October 24, 1929 the stock market crashed ("

S TATE H ISTORIC S ITE Unique in American history, Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as President by his father, here in his boyhood home on August 3, 1923. It was in the family homestead in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, that a vacationing Vice President Calvin Calvin Coolidge received an urgent message from Washington. Moments later, by the light of a kerosene lamp, Coolidge took the oath of office from his father, the local notary public, following the untimely death of President Warren Harding. Years later, Coolidge wrote, "It seemed a simple and natural thing to do at the time, but I can now realize something of the dramatic force of the event." The homestead remains exactly as it was the night Coolidge took office. In fact, much of the village of Plymouth Notch is unchanged since the early 20th century. The Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site is considered one of the best preserved Presidential sites in the nation.

Writings The Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge Died : January 5, 1933, Northampton, Massachusetts Buried : Plymouth Notch, Vermont Consulting Editor Biography: A Life in Brief A quiet and somber man whose sour expression masked a dry wit, Calvin Coolidge was known as "Silent Cal." After learning of his ascendancy to President on the death of Warren Harding in 1923, Coolidge was sworn in by his father, a justice of the peace, and promptly went back to bed. Calvin Coolidge was born on Independence Day, 1872, and raised in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. His father was a pillar of the community, holding a variety of local offices from tax collector to constable. From him, Coolidge inherited his taciturn nature, his frugality, and his commitment to public service. The early death of his mother and sister also contributed to his somber public image.

Home of the 30th president of the United States. Located in Plymouth.

The Coolidge Homestead by Mimi Baird [click on photographs to see larger versions] T he Coolidge Homestead is an important component of the activities of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation. It is also the centerpiece of the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site in Plymouth . The house was the setting for many significant events that affected the life and times of Calvin Coolidge. He moved there when he was four. T he character of young Coolidge was formed in this house. The shyness that followed him over the years became apparent. He would enter the house after completing a chore and, upon hearing the voices in the kitchen, would immediately dread having to meet people and engage in conversation. Wrenching sadness entered Calvin’s life at 12, when his mother, Victoria Josephine Moor, age 39, died in March of 1885. Calvin, his father, Col. John Coolidge, and sister Abigail were at her bedside. "The greatest grief that can come to a boy came to me. Life was never to seem the same again." O n March 6, 1890, at the Homestead, while Calvin was at Black River Academy in Ludlow, his sister, Abigail, 14, also died. "I am having a very good time this spring but will be glad when I can go home and be with you. It is lonesome here without Abbie."
