Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) was a shy, silent New England Republican who led the United States during the boisterous Jazz Age of the 1920's. He was the sixth vice president to become president upon the death of a chief executive. Coolidge was vacationing on his father's farm in Vermont when President Warren G. Harding died in 1923. The elder Coolidge, a notary public, administered the oath of office in the dining room. Never before had this ceremony been performed by such a minor official or by a president's father.
In 1924, Coolidge was elected to a full four-year term. He enjoyed great popularity and probably could have been reelected. But he decided to retire. His terse announcement became his most famous statement: "I do not choose to run for president in 1928." Herbert Hoover succeeded him.
Americans respected the views of the close-mouthed Coolidge. His reputation for wisdom was based on his common sense and dry wit. He issued few unnecessary public statements and rarely wasted a word.

Coolidge attended a one-room school until he entered Black River Academy at 13. He graduated with honors from Amherst College in Massachusetts, decided to become a lawyer and passed the bar examination in less than two years. His Presidency: As president during the roaring 20s, Coolidge was a symbol of prosperity. He was thrifty, conservative regarding economics, and had common sense which people admired. He was not very interested in foreign affairs, but took measures to protect American interest in Nicaragua and improve relations with Mexico. His Life: At 2:30 on the morning of August 3, 1923, while visiting in Vermont, Calvin Coolidge received word that he was President. By the light of a kerosene lamp, his father, who was a notary public, administered the oath of office as Coolidge placed his hand on the family Bible.

Famous Vermonter : United States President Calvin Coolidge
Located on Route 100A between Woodstock and Rutland Vermont, the rural Vermont town of Plymouth Notch, the birthplace and boyhood home of Calvin Coolidge, has remained unchanged since the turn of the century. The homes and community buildings present at that time have been preserved as have many of their original furnishings. This U.S. historic site is owned, operated and maintained by the State of Vermont. Between Mid May and mid October you can visit these splendid historic sites daily from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm 7 days a week. During the winter months special exhibits may be viewed at The Aldrich house. Every 4th of July the site hosts a special celebration. The Visitors center was built by the State of Vermont in 1972, the centennial of President Coolidge's birth. There you can find a museum, gift shop and other exhibits. The Wilder Barn has an extensive collection of framing implements and dates back to 1875. The Wilder House was originally a tavern built around 1830 and was the childhood home of President Coolidge's mother, Victoria Josephine Moor. The Coolidge Homestead was the location where President Coolidge took the presidential oath of office after the death of President Harding in 1923. Recently a signed copy of the inaugural oath of office was purchased by a California History professor for $15,000. He died there in 1926 and is buried in the town cemetery beside six generations of Coolidges. Many other fine historic buildings remain in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, each with its own special history and ambiance.

30th President
Coolidge was one of two Presidents born in Vermont. During the Garfield-Hancock campaign of 1880, he asked his father for a penny to buy candy. John Coolidge refused, explaining that if the Democrats should be elected, hard times could be expected. After Garfield won, Calvin reminded his father that the Republicans had stayed in power. He got the penny.
On August 2, 1923, Coolidge was vacationing at his father's home in Plymouth, Vermont. It took several hours for the news of President Harding's death in California to reach the small town. Traditionally, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court swears in the president, but he was 500 miles away. So at 2:30 a.m., Coolidge's father, a notary republic, administered the oath of office to his son by the light of a kerosene lamp. Called "Silent Cal," Coolidge was once challenged by a reporter, saying, "I bet someone that I could get more than two words out of you." Coolidge responded, "You lose." He was the first president to have his inauguration heard on the radio and the first president to make a radio broadcast. The first presidential political speech on the radio originated from New York City and was broadcast on 5 radio stations. An audience estimated to be about 5 million people listened in to hear Coolidge speak.

Calvin Coolidge
US President - 1923-29 Courtesy of the Library of Congress At 2:30 on the morning of August 3, 1923, while visiting in Vermont, Calvin Coolidge received word that he was President. By the light of a kerosene lamp, his father, who was a notary public, administered the oath of office as Coolidge placed his hand on the family Bible. Coolidge was "distinguished for character more than for heroic achievement," wrote a Democratic admirer, Alfred E. Smith. "His great task was to restore the dignity and prestige of the Presidency when it had reached the lowest ebb in our history ... in a time of extravagance and waste...." Born in Plymouth, Vermont, on July 4, 1872, Coolidge was the son of a village storekeeper. He was graduated from Amherst College with honors, and entered law and politics in Northampton, Massachusetts. Slowly, methodically, he went up the political ladder from councilman in Northampton to Governor of Massachusetts, as a Republican. En route he became thoroughly conservative.

Calvin Coolidge, 29th Vice President (1921-1923) If the Vice-President is a man of discretion and character so that he can be relied upon to act as a subordinate in that position, he should be invited to sit with the Cabinet, although some of the Senators, wishing to be the only advisers of the President, do not look on that proposal with favor. Youth Calvin Coolidge grew up in the bucolic setting of rural Vermont in the late nineteenth century. He was a slight, red-headed, blue-eyed boy whose decided nasal twang was made worse by numerous childhood allergies until it gave his voice a quacking sound. His invalid mother died when he was just twelve years old, and he was raised by his father, Colonel John Coolidge, a talented jack-of-all-trades, who ran a general store and farmed, as well as serving as justice of the peace and a member of the state legislature. For all these accomplishments, Colonel Coolidge was not a man who could express his emotions openly, and one senses from reading Calvin Coolidge's Autobiography that he spent much of his life trying to earn his father's respect and approval. As Coolidge later noted, "A lot of people in Plymouth can't understand how I got to be President, least of all my father!" A Shy Politician A painfully shy boy, Coolidge would go into a panic at the sound of a stranger's voice in the house. Writing in a letter to a friend years later, he recalled that when visitors would sit with his parents in the kitchen, he found it difficult to go in and greet them. "I was almost ten before I realized I couldn't go on that way. And by fighting hard I used to manage to get through that door. I'm all right with old friends, but every time I meet a stranger, I've got to get through the old kitchen door, back home, and it's not easy."

Calvin Coolidge
John Calvin Coolidge Jr. was born the son of a village storekeeper in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, on July 4, 1872. Upon graduating from college, he dropped his first name. Coolidge's mother, Victoria, died when he was 12 years old. The next year, he entered Black River Academy and graduated in 1890. Following a short stint at St. Johnsbury Academy, he entered Amherst College in 1891 and graduated cum laude in 1895. Coolidge established a law practice in Northhampton, Massachusetts, but soon developed an interest in politics. A conservative Republican, he moved steadily through the political ranks, from Northampton City Councilman (1899), City Solicitor (1900-01), Clerk of Courts (1904), Member of Massachusetts Legislature (1907-08), Mayor of Northampton (1910-11), Member of Massachusetts Legislature (1912-15), Lieutenant-Governor of Massachusetts (1916-18) to Governor of Massachusetts (1918-20). He married Grace Anna Goodhue in 1905. Her personality was the opposite of Coolidge's; she was outgoing and talkative. Her husband would later be known as "Silent Cal." The couple had two sons, John and Calvin Jr. Coolidge became famous nationwide during the Boston Police Strike of 1919, when nearly three fourths of that force left work. Mobs roamed Boston, breaking windows and looting stores for two nights. The mayor managed to restore order with local militias. Then Coolidge called in the entire state militia, which broke the strikers' will. Coolidge made a famous declaration: "There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, any time."

He took satisfaction in presiding over the Senate, in attending Cabinet meetings, and ranking next to the president in ceremonial functions. “Silent Cal,” as he was called, began to express himself more in longer speeches and in newspaper articles. By 1923 President Harding was faced with a number of difficulties. A business depression, which had begun in 1922, continued. In addition, the Republican majorities in both houses of Congress were reduced in the election of 1922, and a discontented farm bloc of Western Republican senators threatened to destroy the Senate majority by allying with the Democrats. Finally, it was rumored that major scandals involving Harding's friends were about to break.
