[vote for against Simplify microwave food preparation by encoding the cooking instructions into a bar code on the package. Put a bar code scanner on the front of the oven (or perhaps as a pen-like device attached via a short cable,) and have the oven convert the bar code into appropriate cooking times and power(s). The ideal version of this would: 1) Convert cooking times and power specifications from some sort of "global" standard into the values appropriate for the particular microwave oven. 2) Include information in the bar code explaining how to scale or adjust the cooking times and powers based on portion(s). 3) Convert the information in the bar code into a single, hands-free program which would include cooking periods, defrost periods, "rest" periods (i.e., times in the middle and end of the cooking cycle during which the product sits in the oven but the oven applies no power to it.)

Safety tips for healthy eating (HealthScoutNews) Microwaves are great for defrosting, heating and cooking, but they can also harbor food-borne illnesses and lead to other problems. The University of Arizona recommends these microwave safety techniques:
  • Remove food from its store wrap before defrosting. Foam trays and plastic wraps may melt and cause chemicals to leak into the food. Never stuff a bird that will be cooked in a microwave, since it may not cook thoroughly. Never use brown paper bags, newspaper, metal or foil in the microwave. Reheat foods until they're steaming or hot to the touch. Cover foods and stir them from the outside in for even heating.

Arrangement of Food

Allow space between individual items when arranging food in the oven. When two or more items, place them in a circle, leaving the center free of food. Food should not be piled for cooking.
Browning
Some food cooks so quickly they do not have time to brown. The color of hamburgers, steaks, and chops can be enhanced by using gravy browning sauce, soy sauce, onion soup mix, or dry gravy mix on the meat. The color of poultry can be enhanced with paprika. Browning can also be achieved with a microwave browning grille, under the conventional broiler, in a hot conventional oven, or in a skillet on top of the stove. Large cuts of meat will brown naturally while cooking in the microwave oven.
Carry-over Cooking
Whether in a microwave or conventional oven, food will continue to cook after it is removed. The cooking that takes place after the food is removed from the oven is called "carry-over cooking". Food should be slightly under cooked. The food will then finish cooking during the standing time.
