Pacific explorer. James Cook was born on 27 October 1728 at the Yorkshire village of Marton, a few miles south of Middlesbrough, in the valley of the Tees. His father, James Cook, a native of Ednam, Roxburghshire, Scotland, was a farm labourer in the employ of one Scottowe; his mother Grace, n©e Pace, was a Yorkshirewoman. Cook was the second child and there were other children. When Cook was about two years old Scottowe appointed his father manager of Airy Holme Farm, Great Ayton, a Yorkshire village a few miles south-east of Marton. Here the son grew up as a farm boy. He was taught to read by a Miss Mary Walker, and Scottowe paid for some schooling for him at the village school. At the age of 17 Cook was apprenticed to William Sanderson, a general storekeeper of Staithes, a small Yorkshire seaport about a dozen miles from Great Ayton. After 18 months Sanderson released Cook from his apprenticeship so that he might be apprenticed to Walker Brothers, shipowners of the Yorkshire port of Whitby, at the mouth of the Esk. Cook's apprenticeship for three years commenced in July 1746. Walker Brothers were engaged mainly in the coastal coal trade from Newcastle and other northern ports as far south as London, and it was in the Freelove , a coal ship of 450 tons, that Cook's first seagoing experience, when he was aged 17–19, was gained. During the winter off-season he lived with his master, John Walker, who taught him navigation and became his lifelong friend. In 1748 Cook was transferred to a new Walker ship, the

Captain James Cook
(Born: October 27, 1728 Died: February 14, 1779)
The English navigator James Cook, possibly the greatest explorer of the 18th century, is known for his voyages to the Pacific Ocean and his application of scientific methods to exploration and to cartography. Born on Oct. 27, 1728, he was the son of a poor Scotsman who had settled in Yorkshire as an agricultural labourer. After a short time in a haberdasher's shop at Stainthes, he became a bound apprentice to a Whitby ship owner, and spent several years in coasting and Baltic trade. He joined the Royal Navy in 1755 as an able-bodied seaman, soon became a mate, and within four years became a master. In 1759, during the Seven Years' War, Cook was given command of the Mercury, sailing to Canada and up the St. Lawrence River, where he helped to survey the river channel. He was responsible for the successful piloting of the fleet, which took Quebec. After the war ended in 1763, Cook, commanding the schooner Grenville, spent four years surveying the coasts of Labrador, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. He also studied mathematics in order to master the science of navigation. His charts of the coasts, considered both important and accurate, were published. Cook had observed a solar eclipse in 1766 and used it to determine the longitude of Newfoundland; these findings were published in the Transactions of the Royal Society. After his return to England in 1767, Cook was commissioned a lieutenant in the Royal Navy.

English explorer - Mapped the east coast of Australia - 1770
British explorer James Cook is most noted for having discovered Australia and Hawaii. James Cook (October 27, 1728 - February 14, 1779) was a British explorer and navigator. He made three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, in which its main shorelines were discovered. Cook was also a map maker.
Introduction
Cook was born in Marton in Cleveland, which was then part of Yorkshire, near the town of Middlesbrough. As a child he moved with his family to Great Ayton. As a teenager he developed a fascination for the sea, taught himself cartography), and travelled to Whitby to find employment on the coal ships there. During the Seven Years' War he served in the Royal Navy, participating in the siege of Quebec City before the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. He showed a talent for surveying and cartography and was responsible for mapping much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege. His surveying skills were put to good use in the 1760s mapping the jagged coast of Newfoundland, which brought him to the attention of the Royal Society. Cook's distinctive and huge achievements can be attributed to a combination of excellent seamanship, his superior surveying and cartographic skills, courage in exploring dangerous locations to confirm the facts (

http://www3.telus.net/st_simons/cr9901.htm
An Article for the January 1999 Deep Cove Crier With New Year’s Eve just finished and the 3rd Millennium rushing upon us, it is a good time to take stock and ask ourselves what our lives are really all about. What are we really looking for in life? What really is the meaning and purpose of our lives here on planet earth? This month’s article is the third in a trilogy of English Explorers that helped make Canada what it is today. Sir Martin Frobisher (Nov. 98 DCC), and Captain George Vancouver (Dec. 98 DCC) were all searchers for something more in life. They, like Captain James Cook, were all deeply curious about this mysterious planet that we live on. All were seeking to make sense out of the confusing jumble of facts and information that was flooding into their previously sheltered English world. Sometimes I ask myself: Why is English now spoken by hundreds of millions of people in virtually every country of the world? Why do most people of English ancestry live anywhere but England? Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, South Africa, etc. Perhaps it is because as seagoing islanders, the British were insatiable searchers for that which was beyond. From the ranks of such inexhaustible seekers emerged the greatest of the 18th century nautical explorers –Captain James Cook. James Cook had an unbounded curiosity and a deep interest in everybody and everything with which he came into contact. Born on October 27th, 1728 in Yorkshire, Cook’s father was an impoverished Scottish farm labourer and his mother a simple Yorkshire village woman. Cook began his sea life by lugging coal off the treacherous east coast of England. There he learned how to survive the storms, fogs, hidden shoals, and tricky tides.

GOODIES Captain James Cook Captain James Cook "... the ablest and most renowned navigator this or any country hath produced. He possessed all the qualifications requisite for his profession and great undertakings ..." - Lord Palliser, Cook's superior in the Navy. On April 3, 1768, the Earl of Pembroke, an ungainly-looking North Sea coal carrier, was put into dry dock in a choice slip at the English Naval shipyard of Deptford, on the Thames River near London. Stout and heavy-timbered, with a bluff bow and a narrow stern, the new arrival appeared distinctly out of place amid the rows of sleek frigates and towering ships of the line being repaired and refitted for duty. A few Deptford officers brusquely questioned whether the bark-rigged vessel was even mustered in the Royal Navy. For what conceivable purpose could the Admiralty require the services of a grimy workboat? In fact, the humble collier was intended for a singularly adventurous role. She would carry a hand-picked group of naval officers and scientists to the farthest reaches of the Pacific to conduct vital astronomical studies and to make yet another search for the continent identified on the maps as Terra Australis Incognita. A collier had been selected because it could hold the large quantities of supplies and scientific equipment the voyagers would require, and also because it was flat-bottomed and was able to take the punishment of an accidental grounding.

Captain James Cook, RN FRS. 1728 - 1779
James was born in Marton, now part of Middlesbrough, on 27th October 1728. After leaving Great Ayton in 1745, he travelled to Staithes where he worked as a draper's assistant. He soon journeyed to Whitby and was apprenticed to the Walkers, working on their coal vessels plying up and down the east coast. In 1755 he joined the Royal Navy and so began an illustrious career as explorer, navigator and scientist. His three voyages of exploration on the Endeavour and Resolution charted previously unknown lands and discovered thousands of plant species. James died in Hawaii on 14th February 1779 when he was attacked by natives. He was buried at sea.
This is a land of legend, natural beauty, religious and maritime heritage mixed with a modern shopping experience at Middlesbrough's four indoor shopping centres. Coastal walks, forest trails, market towns and seaside resorts offer activities to suit the most discerning visitor. The area wide Captain Cook Festival held in late October is an annual celebration of both maritime culture and music and is great family fun.
