Introduction

My project is on James Cook, a British explorer and navigator who lived from 1728-1779. I choose James Cook for my project because I have visited some of the places he named in Newfoundland and his life would be interesting to learn about. My project consists of the early life of James Cook, when he was in the Navy and his many voyages. I have included my own drawings of Cook, his ship and the routes he explored. I hope you enjoy my project!
Early Life of James Cook J ames Cook was born on Oct. 27 1728 in Morton-in-Cleveland Yorksure England. His birthplace was a thatched cottage. Cook was the son of a farm labourer. Later Cook and his family moved to Ayton where he attended school. His father's employer was impressed by his intelligence, he was the one who paid for Cook's schooling. In 1774 Cook went to work in a shop in Saithes but he was very unhappy. At the age of 17 he worked for a ship owner here he learned about boating and the sea.
I n 1775 Cook joined the Royal Navy as a ordinary seaman and was sent to North America on the ship Eagle. He worked his way up the Navy and finally became commander of his own survey vessel. This was very extra ordinary because ordinary people didn't usually become ship commander in the British Navy.

Captain James Cook (1728 - 1779) is a good candidate for the title of greatest explorer in history. He was impressive both for the scope of his travels and the meticulous detail with which he noted his discoveries. Besides being a great explorer, he was very enlightened for his time, showing a high degree of regard for both his own crew and for the various peoples and cultures he encountered. He was a native of Yorkshire, England. After being apprenticed to a shipping family aged 17 he learnt his trade of sailing and navigation. Later, joining the Royal Navy, he was sent to North America where he was put to work surveying and mapping the St Lawrence River, and he quickly became well-known in the navy for the accuracy and detail of his work. JAMES COOK, EUROPE'S MOST CELEBRATED EXPORER
    James Cook (1728 - 1779)
When he was born on October 27, 1728, at Marton-in-Cleveland, England, the son of a farm labourer, no one could have foreseen the destiny of James Cook, great navigator, hydrographer and explorer. At 18, the course of his life changed when he was hired as an apprentice by a ships ' owner in Whitby. For three years, he learned all ships' manoeuvres, which allowed him, in June 1755, to enter the Royal Navy as an able-bodied seaman . Two years later, he became a "master " and spent most of the Seven Years' War on the coast of the Atlantic provinces and the St. Lawrence River. In 1758, Cook drafted a first map An Italian portrait of James Cook
Cook was discharged from the navy in November 1762. The following month, he married Elizabeth Batts, with whom he would have six children. Domestic life was short-lived however, as, five months later, the British Admiralty hired him to do a detailed survey of the shores of Newfoundland identifying territories specified under the Treaty of Paris of 1763 . From 1766 to 1768, Cook developed a new model of hydrographic surveys combining trigonometric surveys made on land using a small craft taking many soundings, information on aquatic fauna, coastal profiles and navigational notes. Then came the two circumnavigations that would overturn what Europe knew of the South Pacific by detailing information which, before 1775, was only fragmented and jumbled. Equipped with the first marine chronometer, used to determine longitude, in August 1768, Cook left for the first voyage around the world and returned in 1771. During this first voyage, New Zealand, the east coast of Australia and the Strait of Torres emerged from the fog of rumour and myth.

    Early Life
James Cook was born in relatively humble circumstances at Marton in North Yorkshire , near what is today recognised as the town of Middlesbrough . Cook was one of five children born to a local woman and a Scottish migrant farm labourer, Grace and James Sr. As a child, Cook moved with his family to a farm at Great Ayton where he was educated at the local school, his studies financed by his father's employer. At 13 he began work with his father, now the farm's manager. In when he was 16, Cook left home to be apprenticed in a grocer haberdashery in the fishing village of Staithes . According to tradition, it was there that Cook first felt the lure of the

    James Cook: British Explorer

James Cook (October 27, 1728 - February 14, 1779) was a British explorer and astronomer who went on many expeditions to the Pacific Ocean, the Antarctic, the Arctic, and around the world. Cook's first journey lasted from August 26,1768 to July 13, 1771, when he sailed to Tahiti on the Endeavor in order to observe Venus as it passed between the Earth and the Sun (this is called the transit of Venus). He was also searching for a large, southern continent that was thought to exist (but does not). Many scientists accompanied him on the voyage, including the botanist Joseph Banks. During this expedition, he sailed from Plymouth, England, to Brazil, around Cape Horn (the southern tip of South America), and to Tahiti (April 11, 1769), where he stayed for months in order to observe the

On August 25, [1768], Cook departed England aboard the Endeavour with 94 crewmen and scientists. He was carrying secret orders from the Royal Navy to be opened upon completion of his scientific mission. Cook was determined to keep his crew healthy. He insisted his men eat onions and pickled cabbage every day, and made sure that the ship kept fresh fruit and vegetables on board. He ordered his men to bathe every day, to clean their clothing, and to air out their bedding. He did not know the scientific reasons behind these measures, but he knew they worked to prevent scurvy and other diseases in his crew.

    Cook, James
    British explorer and navigator
Popularly known as "Captain Cook," James Cook was a legendary explorer whose epic voyages prompted the Royal Navy to dub him a man of "genius and capacity."
The son of a Yorkshire farmhand, he was apprenticed to a shipowner at age 18 and worked on coalboats in the North Sea. In 1755 he joined the Royal Navy, and was quickly promoted to become a master.
The first of his great Pacific voyages was a scientific expedition on which he became the first person to chart New Zealand and the east coast of Australia. On later voyages he sailed along the edge of Antarctica, proving that a speculated southern continent existed only as an ice mass, and crossed the Antarctic Circle.
He also discovered several Pacific island groups, and searched for a northeast passage between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans.
Cook set new standards of health and lost few of his crew; he brought a scientific approach into exploration; most of all, he changed the map of the world. Killed by natives in Hawaii, his explorations led the way for the colonization of the Pacific.
