Asia
Among the earliest who described and often illustrated Araceae in Asia were the Dutchmen, H. A. van Rheede tot Drakestein (1688, 1692), who did massive studies of the Malabar coast of India; P. Hermann (1689), who produced the Paradisus Batavus ; and G. E. Rumphius (1747), who studied the flora of the island of Amboina [one of the Mollucas Islands, now Maluku in Indonesia]. Another Dutch botanist, N. L. Burmann (1768), published Araceae in his Flora Indica

Years of the Pooh-Bah: A Cook Islands History , by Dick Scott, is a recent and readable book, lavishly illustrated with historical photographs. Alphons MJ Kloosterman's gives a brief history of each island, the early legends of each and a record of its European contact. History of Rarotonga, up to 1853 , by Taira Rere, is a concise account of the arrival of Christianity in the Cook Islands, particularly in Rarotonga, with sketches of the various participants in the islands' history. If you can get past the pro-missionary slant, books like the Reverend William Gill's Gems of the Coral Islands and William Wyatt Gill's (no relation) Cook Islands Custom are interesting 19th century accounts island life. Paul Theroux's The Happy Isles of Oceania: Paddling the Pacific has a chapter on a trip to Aitutaki.

... Map of colonial history While the winds of change swept through European colonies in Asia and Africa after the Second World War, decolonisation came later in the Pacific region. And even as we move to the end of the twentieth century, the age of colonialism is not over in the Pacific In 1990, the United Nations commenced the Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism - but today, there are still outliers of empire in the Pacific region. The United Nations Decolonisation Committee maintains a list of non-self-governing territories, which includes Pacific nations such as New Caledonia, Guam, East Timor, American Samoa and even tiny Pitcairn, the last element of the British empire in the region. Rapanui (Easter Island) remains under Chilean administration. Other Pacific peoples are seeking the right to self-determination: in Bougainville, Ka Pae'aina (Hawai'i), Te Ao Maohi (French Polynesia) and West Papua (Irian Jaya). The Pacific islands live with the legacies of more than a century of colonial rule

Artists continue to practice a variety of art forms for their own use, including the production of bark cloth and mats as well as the creation of nonfigural wood carvings such as bowls and headrests. What figurative sculpture is produced during the first half of the century, however, is almost universally made for sale. In the decades after World War II, as part of the larger global movement toward decolonization, parts of Polynesia achieve independence, including Western Samoa, Fiji, the Cook Islands, and Tuvalu. Others, such as the Austral, Tuamotu, Marquesas, and Society Islands, as well as American Samoa, remain under the authority of other nations or, as in the case of Hawai'i, become formally incorporated into them. Beginning in the 1970s, many Polynesian peoples, particularly Hawaiians and Maori who live among the majority settler populations of their original homelands, become increasingly active in asserting their cultural identity and seeking greater political autonomy. The same period witnesses a wider renaissance of Polynesian culture and art across the entire region. Some artists devote themselves to rejuvenating or reviving indigenous traditions such as wood carving and the making of bark cloth. Others use Western materials and techniques, integrating them into their own artistic and cultural traditions to create distinctively Polynesian forms of contemporary art.

Tania Rakei Tania Rakei, a student at Nukutere College, has received a prize of a US$100 cheque in recognition of her entry in an essay competition organised by the Regional Unit for Social and Human Sciences in Asia and the Pacific (RUSHSAP). Sixteen year old Rakei says she was shocked when told the news of her essay winning an award."I couldn't believe it", she says. Rakei says her English teacher Jacqui Sanderson encouraged her to join the competition. With a choice of ten topics, Rakei chose the title "Leading a good life amidst temptation" on which to write her essay. She says she has written from "my point of view, what temptations young people may go through," and "giving my point to those in need and to those who are tempted." "I have always enjoyed writing," she adds. All members of the Asia-Pacific Social Sciences School Network (APSSSNET) were invited to participate in the writing competition. One hundred and eighty seven entries from 13 different countries were submitted. The contest's aim is to "encourage the students and teachers to share the information and ideas on social science issues," says RUSHSAP.
