It is offered in collaboration with the AHRB Centre for North-East England History, which means students benefit from the combined expertise of regional historians based in the universities of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside. Map of colonial history While the winds of change swept through European colonies in Asia and Africa after the Second World War, decolonisation came later in the Pacific region. And even as we move to the end of the twentieth century, the age of colonialism is not over in the Pacific In 1990, the United Nations commenced the Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism - but today, there are still outliers of empire in the Pacific region. The United Nations Decolonisation Committee maintains a list of non-self-governing territories, which includes Pacific nations such as New Caledonia, Guam, East Timor, American Samoa and even tiny Pitcairn, the last element of the British empire in the region. Beginning in the 1970s, many Polynesian peoples, particularly Hawaiians and Maori who live among the majority settler populations of their original homelands, become increasingly active in asserting their cultural identity and seeking greater political autonomy. The same period witnesses a wider renaissance of Polynesian culture and art across the entire region. Some artists devote themselves to rejuvenating or reviving indigenous traditions such as wood carving and the making of bark cloth. PACIFIC - Cook Islands Media article Student wins regional essay award Tania Rakei Tania Rakei, a student at Nukutere College, has received a prize of a US$100 cheque in recognition of her entry in an essay competition organised by the Regional Unit for Social and Human Sciences in Asia and the Pacific (RUSHSAP). Sixteen year old Rakei says she was shocked when told the news of her essay winning an award."I couldn't believe it", she says. Rakei says her English teacher Jacqui Sanderson encouraged her to join the competition.With a choice of ten topics, Rakei chose the title "Leading a good life amidst temptation" on which to write her essay. She says she has written from "my point of view, what temptations young people may go through," and "giving my point to those in need and to those who are tempted." "I have always enjoyed writing," she adds. All members of the Asia-Pacific Social Sciences School Network (APSSSNET) were invited to participate in the writing competition. One hundred and eighty seven entries from 13 different countries were submitted. The contest's aim is to "encourage the students and teachers to share the information and ideas on social science issues," says RUSHSAP.
