Cook Islands Vacation Arrangements, Cook Islands Cruises, Cook Islands Tours Here you will find some great Cook Islands Vacations , Cook Islands cruises, romantic Cook Islands Hotels , and the best Cook Islands scuba diving adventures- The Cook Islands were isolated from major tourist routes for years, they offer visitors untouched beauty and a peaceful way of life. You can stroll along beaches edged with swaying palms and swim in warm lagoons protected by coral reefs. The islands are divided naturally into two groups. The eight islands of the southern Cooks include the destinations of Rarotonga and Aitutaki. The Cook Island group was named after Captain James Cook, who sighted the Manua atoll (Hervey Island) in 1773.. The ill fated Captain William Bligh sighted Aitutaki in 1789, and mutineer Fletcher Christian, Rarotonga, on the same boat (the Bounty), shortly after the famous mutiny on April 28.1789. Aitutaki is the second most visited of the magical Cook Islands and is recommended as a "must see"extension to your Rarotonga holidays. Atiu is a fascinating Cook Island riddled with caves and surrounded with raised coral cliffs and white sand beaches. Mangaia is the southernmost island of the Cook group and is also surrounded by coral cliffs with an interior of several swamps and a small lake. Limestone and volcanic samples on the island date back eighteen million years.

    The Cook Islanders
    "Wishing You a Long Life"

Cook Island society is well-known for friendliness, openness and a gentle, easy-going spirit. Some 90 percent of Cook Islanders are "pure" Polynesians people of the 'many' (poly) islands of the South Pacific, distantly related to the New Zealand Maori.
Only 10 percent of Cook Islanders descend from minorities from Europe, New Zealand, Fiji, or China. Individuality between islands is the hallmark of the culture of the Cook Islands, and reflects their varied sources of ancient migration. The local language is Cook Islands Maori closely related to the Polynesian languages spoken in Tahiti and Hawaii although English is widely spoken as a second language. While each island has its own dialect, islanders can all understand each other when speaking Maori , with a couple of exceptions. The islands of Pukapuka and Penrhyn have languages very different to the rest of the islands in the Cook Islands. They are the northern most islands in the Cook Islands.Unabashedly inclusive people, Cook Islanders will happily introduce themselves with their local greeting "kia orana" ("may you live on").
Family lineage is very important to Cook Islanders, most of whom can proudly trace their ancestors back for many generations to the original tribes of the islands.

Background: Named after Captain Cook, who sighted them in 1770, the islands became a British protectorate in 1888. By 1900, administrative control was transferred to New Zealand; in 1965 residents chose self-government in free association with New Zealand. The emigration of skilled workers to New Zealand and government deficits are continuing problems.

    National Geographic Endeavour
View Deck Plans We begin our voyage in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands’ main island with its shimmering, whitesand beaches and pristine interior. The stunning surroundings here set the stage for our entire expedition, so breathe in the fresh sea air and relax as we set sail on National Geographic Endeavour through this remote, diverse patch of the South Pacific. Next landfall is Aitutaki, where locals welcome us with leis and a friendly dance. We’ll enjoy a variety of water activities during the morning, then in the afternoon explore some of the rich, cultural sites on the atoll. As the ship clips on towards Palmerston Atoll and Beveridge Reef, we’ll become more familiar with the simultaneously rugged and gentle landscape that typifies these parts. Enjoy swimming from gorgeous beaches and snorkeling and diving among the intricate coral formations. The next few days will be spent exploring the natural beauty and cultural wealth of the islands of Niue and Tonga. At Tofua, we will hike through picturesque tropical forests, with unique birds flitting and singing around us. Just offshore from this island is where the famous mutiny on the Bounty occurred! We’ll snorkel and dive along the shores of Nuku’alofa, and those interested may take a walk to the proud villagers’ centerpiece — the Royal Palace. Approaching Turtle Island, we will anchor our ship for an afternoon of watersports and relaxing in the sun. Moving onwards to the town of Suva, we will provide options for those interested in exploring the town or shopping. There will also be the chance to visit Colo-I-Suva Forest Park, a peaceful rain forest with tranquil waters, an array of birdlife and breathtaking vistas.
