The Cook Islands are a self-governing parliamentary democracy in free association with New Zealand , located in Oceania . It's a archipelago that consists of 15 islands spread out over 2.2 million sq. km. The Cook Islands are located in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, between French Polynesia (Society Islands) to the east and Tonga to the west. Named after Captain Cook, who sighted them in 1770, the islands became a British protectorate in 1888. By 1900, administrative control was transferred to New Zealand; in 1965 residents chose self-government in free association with New Zealand. In effect, New Zealand handles defense, foreign affairs (including passports), and currency; otherwise the islands are self-governing. This includes immigration, which is strictly controlledeven for New Zealanders. The emigration of skilled workers to New Zealand and government deficits are continuing problems.

Geckos
Geckos are small, harmless lizards with adhesive pads on their toes. Mostly nocturnal, they wander the walls and ceilings, cack-cacking, mating and keeping the mosquito population down. Repeat - they are harmless! I’m repeating that because of a resort that told me they had quite a few American tourists complaining that there were baby crocodiles in their room. I like the little critters - although one made a home in my computer once and made a real mess. Top
Geography
There are 15 islands that make up the Cooks with numerous motus (uninhabited islets). Some islands are raised atolls, some are volcanic in origin. Rarotonga is the only island with a dramatic mountainous interior. Rarotonga and Aitutaki have a surrounding reef that allows for safe lagoon snorkelling. The actual land area is small (around 24,000 hectares) but the islands are spread over 1.83 million square kilometers of the South Pacific. Top

Golf
There are nine hole golf courses on both Rarotonga and Aitutaki and they are pretty much weekend hacker type courses but they are fun and green fees and club hire costs are low ($15). On Rarotonga dodging radio towers can come into play (compulsory replay). The colonial style bar at The Rarotonga Golf Club is a pleasant spot for a cold beer (closed Sundays). Booking s recommended for Saturdays and there is an annual tournament in September. Phone 20 621. The annual tournament on Aitutaki is held in October and booking isn’t essential for the rest of the year. The course runs beside the airport (which is considered out of bounds). Green fees and club hire will set you back $10.

An island group of the southern Pacific Ocean southeast of Samoa. Probably first inhabited by Polynesians more than 1,500 years ago, the islands were sighted by Capt. James Cook in 1773. They are now self-governing under the sovereignty of New Zealand. Encyclopedia Cook Islands, island group (2003 est. pop. 13,200), 90 sq mi (234 sq km), South Pacific, SE of Samoa; a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand. It consists of 15 small islands and is comprised of two main groups, the Southern (or Lower) Cook islands ( Rarotonga , Mangaia, Atiu, Aitutaki, Mauke, Mitiaro, and Manuae and Te-Au-o-tu) and the Northern Cook islands (Nassau, Palmerston, Penrhyn, Manihiki , Rakahanga, Pukapuka, and Suwarrow). The islands were formerly called the Hervey Islands. Avarua on Rarotonga is the administrative center of the group. The Cook Islanders are Maoris, a branch of the Polynesian race, and are largely Christians. Economy Copra, fresh and canned fruits and fruit juices, clothing, pearl shell, handicrafts, and jewelry are the principal exports. Tourism and food processing are the major industries. Beginning in 1980s the islands also became a popular tax haven and offshore banking center, but in 2003 the government moved to increase regulation of offshore banks as a result of international pressure. Government spending is important to the economy, and some 60% of the labor force work in the public sector. Most imports, largely foodstuffs, textiles, and fuels, come from New Zealand. The Maoris generally work their own land.
