There are few places in the world as scenic and isolated as the Cook Islands in the South Pacific Ocean, nearly 3000 km. northeast of New Zealand The unspoiled landscapes of these volcanic islands range from craggy mountains and lush interior jungles to white-sand beaches swept by turquoise waters. The Cook Islands consist of 15 tropical islands, scattered over a vast area of Pacific Ocean - approximately 850,000 square miles! Click for Cook Islands map. The island's present-day name stems from the local language, however the precise origin of the meaning is elusive. Simply, 'raro' means 'down' and 'tonga' means 'south'. Some say the famous Tahitian navigator, Iro, visited it once and some years later reported he had "gone down to the south," hence raro tonga. The Samoan voyager, Karika, is also reputed to have called it Rarotonga when he first saw it from the northeast because it was leeward 'raro' and towards the south 'tonga'. These beautiful islands consist of two main groups, one in the north and one in the south.

    Geography of the Cook Islands
The geography of the Cook Islands is both interesting and unique. The 15 tiny islands that make up the Cook Islands are sprinkled over more than two million square kilometres of the South Pacific Ocean. Like jewels in the Pacific, these 15 small islands extend from Penrhyn, 9º south of the equator, to Mangaia , just north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Flanked to the west by Tonga and Samoa , and to the east by Tahiti , the nearest neighbours are Tahiti and Samoa.
Geologically, the Cook Islands have an interesting diversity of island landscapes from the high, rugged island of Rarotonga (653m at its highest point), to the almost atoll-like Aitutaki and the unusual raised islands of Mangaia, Atiu , Mauke and Mitiaro . The makatea (eroded remains of uplifted reef) supports extensive native forest and scrubland.
The Cook Islands are divided into two groups, with a total land area of 240 square kilometres. Within the southern group lies the most populous island, Rarotonga - a lush volcanic island with an encompassing reef and lagoon, and home to some 8000 residents. Rarotonga (67sq km) is the largest island and the main township of Avarua is the centre for administration and shopping. The southern group also includes Aitutaki, Mangaia, Atiu, Mauke, Mitiaro, Palmerston, Takutea and Manuae. The northern group is more scattered and consists of Pukapuka, Manihiki, Penrhyn, Rakahanga, Nassau and Suwarrow.
