~DEDICATED TO BIRDS~ In the spring of 1990 I was given a 2 year old cockatiel. It was the beginning of an adventure into the joys, and sometimes the heartaches, of owning and loving pet birds.
Over the years my flock has grown, but I still have "Cheeks"- the adorable little feathered bundle who first introduced me to the wonders of having a bird companion. These beautiful and intelligent creatures will always fascinate me. That is why I'm dedicating this site...
my little nest in the massive forest of the Internet...
to my cherished feathered companions.
Sharing photos and information about my own pet parrots is just one of the ways
I can express my love for all birds. I hope you enjoy your visits to my nest! Are you ready to take a peek inside?

In my opinion these three different families are well represented in Australia. The first group "Aratinga" with the Sun, Jandayas and Peach-fronted Conures being the most common members available. The Nanday Conure is the only member of its genus. It is very well represented in Australia and it is one of the most beautiful Conures. A Cinnamon mutation of the Nanday is also being bred. The last but not least group are the members of the Pyrrhuras . With the Green-cheeked and Maroon-bellied Conures the most commonly available here in Australia. Westbrook, Queensland Conures' range/habitats are quite large and varied, from dry semi-desert, savannahs, and woodland forests to equatorial rainforests. Stretching from Mexico in the north through to Argentina in the south plus east to include some Caribbean Islands, plus almost every country in between. Feeding on the wild blossoms, native and cultivated fruit, berries, seeds and insects. Some species cause the local farmers problems in eating seed and fruit crops and for over a hundred years have been exported to many countries (e.g. USA, United Kingdom and Australia) before the ban on importation of birds into Australia was put in place in 1945. This was lifted in 1990 with limited importation until 1994. We can only hope the ban is lifted again to allow more Psittacine to be imported, but that is another story.

Sun Conure
Aratinga solstitialis
The intense coloration of sunshine yellow, orange, green and blue make the Sun Conure one of the most popular birds. A stocky bird about 13 inches from beak to tip of tail with a call that has been termed as boisterous. They are not as loud as a Nanday Conure but they don't talk as well either. A hand raised Sunnie can be one of the most devoted and affectionate pets. However at breeding time they will leave you for a mate of their own species. One of the most prolific of the Aratinga Conure group they are capable of producing many clutches in one season which can not be pinned down to a specific month. I have had some begin in January and go right on through to December producing babies two to five at a time. They are easy to raise but in the past few years they have become available in large quantities and thereby the supply is far greater than the demand. Here at Hideaway Farms we pride ourselves in producing for sale unrelated pairs that will produce for many years as well as the cute and clownish pet. The Sunnie can breed as early as two years but a lot of those who breed that young have a first clutch that is infertile. Parent raised or hand raised I have found no difference in their ability to breed and produce.

A Leader in Breeding Hand Reared Companion Parrots
Specialist Breeders of Eclectus, Conures, Exotics, and Australian Companion Parrots Welcome to Parrot Haven Aviary's web pages . I have tried to produce a web site that is beneficial to all aviculturists. Parrot Haven Aviary specialise in Handreared Baby Parrots. All babies are bred at Parrot Haven Aviary and reared in a family environment, our baby Parrots are completely at ease with other family members and pets. Each baby has a birth certificate and literature containing all the information needed to ensure each pet Parrot stays healthy, happy and free from stress. Our baby Parrots make the ultimate companion bird and the perfect pet. Parrot Haven Aviary is a commercial aviary owned and operated by my wife Lyn and myself (Garry Lee.) Parrot Haven Aviary is devoted to producing only hand reared companion parrots for the companion and pet parrot owners of Australian. Our babies have been incubated and hatched in our incubation room, or raised by their parents until they are around 10 days of age. They are then removed from the nest for hand rearing by us. All of our babies are fed hand rearing formula (commercially made) from a spoon, this allows for more human contact and a much quieter, loving and devoted companion in the end, not afraid to be handled by people. Lynette and I fuss over our babies as though they were our own children, so much that we use the phrase "mummy and daddy" when talking to them (no we are not totally mad, but totally devoted to our babies and the enjoyment that they can and do give us while raising them.)

Our life have never be the same after our home are shared with the Dusky Conures. Dusky Conures are very exceptionally sweet, cuddly, and affectionate. There are so many joyful moments with the parrots. However, there was also sadness on the lost of the 1st Dusky Conure, BoBo. We had BoBo for about 1000 days. We will always remember her.

57. My Title
conures are quirky birds! Read all about them, a special report by Monica, winner of the WKN Critters Contest.
http://worldkids.net/critters/pets/birds/conures.htm
Quirky Conures By: Monica
Conures are beautiful and intelligent birds found in many sizes and colors from lush green to brilliant yellow, red, blue, orange, brown and white. A conure's natural habitat ranges from Mexico to Central America to the Caribbean and South America. They are a smaller version of the Macaw. They have a fully feathered facial area (say that five times fast!) and a high pitched unclear voice. However they can, with patience and proper training learn a few words! Conures need adequate cages that are large enough so the birds head does not touch the top of the cage and their tail does not hit the bottom. Your bird must be able to move around freely. You should also have two perches, one up high for your conure to roost at night and one near his water, food and gravel cups. The bottom of the cage should be lined with newspaper or bedding such as ground corn cob or pine shavings. Remember that if you use newspaper it must be changed daily for sanitary reasons and corn cob and shavings will be messy so be prepared to use the vacuum daily! Keep in mind your caged conure will need to be entertained at times so the toys you pick will have a positive affect on your bird. Artificial bones and metal bells are a few examples of toys available for your quirky conure. Wood perches are great but don't be surprised to see your feathered friend chew them up. You may use real branches but beware of poisonous ones! Apple and pear branches are safe.
