Software Updates for Dell Server Hardware Using Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003
Assess
Published: January 31, 2005 The Assess phase of the patch management process is where the existing IT environment is baselined in order to prepare it for patching. This phase is an ongoing process that will need to be followed to accurately determine which Dell server models and hardware components exist in the environment. The goal of the Assess phase is to conduct the following activities: Discovering and inventorying Dell servers. Assessing Dell hardware configurations. Assessing Dell servers in SMS-managed workgroups. Assessing Dell hardware dependencies. Establishing a baseline for Dell server hardware.
Discovering and Inventorying Dell Servers
With regards to patching Dell servers, the first step involves discovering and inventorying the Dell servers in your IT environment. The SMS 2003 systems discovery mechanism can be used to discover computers in your IT environment. Once these systems are discovered, administrators must inventory the systems to identify Dell servers according to: Server model types and versions.

Bring Your MIDI Music to Life
by Jim Aikin
Ever since the invention of the log drum and the bone whistle (at a guess, 50,000 years ago), music has been increasingly dependent on technology. But music has never been about technology. It's about expressing feelings. The trouble is, sometimes technology gets in the way of expression. Nowhere is that a greater danger than when a computer gets into the act. In this article we'll explore some ways to avoid monotony and add more expressive colors to your computer-based music. Technically, you could pull off most of these ideas by drawing controller shapes into sequencer tracks with a mouse (see Figure 1 ). But ultimately, playing music is a physical activity. If you have access to a decent MIDI controller device with a few knobs and sliders, as discussed in my previous article, " Choosing and Using MIDI Controllers ," you'll find it easier to let your intuition take over. That's bound to deepen the expressive side of the music.

Linux-USB Gadget API Framework
Last Modified: 8 June 2005
The API makes it easy for peripherals and other devices embedding GNU/Linux system software to act in the USB "device" (slave) role. The drivers implementing and using that API combine to make a useful driver framework for Linux systems that implement USB peripherals. Many Linux systems will not be able to use it, since they only have PC-style USB Host (master) hardware in a PC, workstation, or server. But when you're putting together embedded Linux systems, a USB peripheral controller option is routine; it's often integrated into processors. Smart gadgets like PDAs, printers, cell phones, cash registers, and network routers often rely on this type of "Device Controller" USB link as one of their basic connectivity options. Sometimes it will be the only option; there are Linux devices that rely on USB even for their power supplies. This is the first such "USB Gadget" framework on GNU/Linux to support high speed (USB 2.0) devices and arbitrary numbers of endpoints, sharing core models and data structures with the "host side" USB API. It's designed for flexibility: the API handles simple devices, composite (multi-function) ones, multiple configurations, class (or vendor) specific functionality, and more. It a good base for integrating and re-using this type of driver code. Tests are available too, which can speed hardware bringup substantially. Many developers have asked about easy ways to start working with this API. If you're comfortable working with embedded Linux platforms, many ARM systems already have Linux support for their integrated USB controllers. Otherwise, a

  • Figure 16 The Experiment Controller supports one or two daughter boards in any combination. The IBM PC adaptor board supports any one of the four daughter boards. Three of the daughter boards provide for a driver, triac, and relay interface to the experimental apparatus. The fourth board provides LEDs and push-button switches for testing controller hardware and software. This chapter will describe each of the boards and how to wire the power, outputs and options. It also provides construction and parts information about each board.

By Ricardo Torres Posted Friday, March 4th 2005 Nuby Tech's recently released Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Controller for the GameCube is a uniquely designed peripheral modeled after the weapon of choice of one of the enemies you'll face in Capcom's survival horror masterpiece. The chainsaw-shaped controller was made to complement the acclaimed game and aims to offer all the functionality of a standard GameCube controller in a detailed, blood-splattered package. Although the stylish controller succeeds in capturing the look of a blood-splattered chainsaw, an awkward layout for the various inputs leaves it wanting as a peripheral. You won't find a better-looking controller out there for the GameCube, but you can certainly find one with better handling. Nuby Tech's Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Controller takes all the functionality of the standard GameCube controller and serves it up in chainsaw form.

Hardware Articles April 5, 2004 Hardware Today: Choosing a RAID Controller By Ben Freeman The last time we looked at server room components, we examined NAS and SANs . This week, Hardware Today returns to the storage corner of the data center to focus on RAID controllers. The RAID controller is best described up as a device in which servers and storage intersect. The controller can be internal to the server, in which case it is a card or chip, or external, in which case it is an independent enclosure, such as a NAS. In either case, the RAID controller manages the physical storage units in a RAID system and delivers them to the server in logical units (e.g., six physical disks may be used to ensure that one drive stays correctly backed up but the server sees only one drive). A RAID controller is almost never purchased separately from the RAID itself, but it is a vital piece of the puzzle and therefore not as much a commodity purchase as the array.

      Introduction
This document describes how to set up SCSI hardware RAID, focusing mainly on host-based adapters from DPT, though the principles applied here are fairly general. Use the information below at your own risk. I disclaim all responsibility for anything you may do after reading this HOWTO. The latest version of this HOWTO will always be available at http://www.ram.org/computing/linux/dpt_raid.html For the purposes of this HOWTO, I am assuming you have only a Linux system running. Also, note that I've only tried this out with the DPT Smartcache IV PM2144UW and PM3334UW controllers, with DPT (SmartRAID tower) and Wetex enclosures, and I have no experience with other setups. So things may be different for your setup.
      Supported controllers
One well-supported host-based hardware RAID controller (i.e, a controller for which there exists a driver under Linux) is one that is made by DPT . However, there exist other host-based and SCSI-to-SCSI controllers which may work under Linux. These include the ones made by

Microsoft to Supply Wireless Controller, HDD with Xbox 360.
      Xbox 360 Accessories Revealed
Category: Multimedia by Anton Shilov At a recent press-conference in Tokyo Japan , Microsoft unveiled the accessories bundled with the Xbox 360 and available at the launch. The main news is that Microsoft would still ship the new gaming console with a hard disk drive, something that was in doubt before. The Xbox 360 packaging will officially include the console itself, a hard drive, a wireless controller, a headset and an Ethernet cable, according to IGN web-site. Specifications of the hard disk drive, e.g., capacity, speed, type of interconnection, hot-plug possibility are unclear just yet. Microsoft did not allow attendees to picture the packaging or hardware, possibly because they are subject to change. In addition, Microsoft has demonstrated a number of accessories, which are likely to be available at launch of the machine later this year. The list of showcases items includes wireless controller; memory unit; wireless network adapter; hard drive, universal media remote controller; face plates; S-video AV cable; VGA HD AV cable; component HD AV cable as well as various batteries and charge kits, possibly for wireless controllers and universal media remote.
