Undergraduate Music Center for Contemporary Music For almost forty years, the Center for Contemporary Music has been at the forefront of developments emphasizing experimental methods in contemporary music and its allied arts and sciences. In 1966, the San Francisco Tape Music Center (founded in 1961) moved to Mills College and became the Mills Tape Music Center, and later, the Center for Contemporary Music (CCM). Since its inception, this organization has achieved a strong international reputation as one of the leading centers for innovation in music. CCM maintains a variety of electronic equipment, instruments and studios, provides instruction and technical assistance, and archives audio recordings. These are available for use by qualified graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and staff. The Center also performs a wide variety of community services in the arts, including public concerts and lecture series, informational and technical assistance, and artist residencies. In addition, the Center is one of few music facilities in the United States open to the public on a non-profit, non-commercial basis, serving independent composers, artists, and musical groups. This service and other public programs keep CCM functioning as an important resource center for the Bay Area's community of composers and artists and contributes to CCM's atmosphere of exciting collaboration and information exchange among students, faculty, staff and outside professionals.

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FOR OBOE
(Berlin Classics)
In the context of late-20th-century music, the oboe can't help recalling the sound of electronic music its strange insistent tone has a similar unearthly quality as well as the almost human sound it shares with its reedy ancestors and cousins around the globe. The pieces gathered on this disc make full use of this weirdly postmodern combination. Burkhard Glaetzner can play his oboe both as a freewheeling, honking reed leaping extraordinary intervals and as a breathy, meditative woodwind capable of strange overtones and divided sounds. Isang Yun's piece gives him the most range to work with the beautiful solo work Piri makes use of an encyclopedic range of tones for the instrument. Other highlights are Xenakis's characteristically histrionic piece for oboe and percussion, Dmaathen , and a hyperkinetic performance of Sequenza , the piece Berio has written for a variety of solo instruments.

On this page: Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping Adult contemporary music Wikipedia Adult contemporary music Adult contemporary music , frequently abbreciated to just AC , is a type of radio format that plays mainstream and pop music, without hip-hop or rap since, as per the name, it is geared more towards adults than teens. AC is generally divided into 2 groups; "Hot AC", also known as "Adult Top 40" or "Adult Alternative", and "Soft AC", also known as "Lite". Some radio stations play only Hot AC; some play only Soft AC, and some play both. It is not thus usually considered a specific genre of music, as it is merely an assembly of selected tracks of musicians of many different genres. On the other hand it is believed that many musicians will include a certain song on their album or release a certain single designed to "cross over" and get played on AC stations (such as Christina Aguilera 's "Beautiful", Avril Lavigne 's "Complicated" or Britney Spears ' "Everytime", all three of which charted on the Hot and Soft AC charts).

Most of the present-day activities are the result of the establishment of institutions over a century ago and a musical heritage that extends back to the Middle Ages. This survey will begin with a discussion of performing organizations and festivals before continuing with remarks on some of the most influential composers and concluding with details on music promotion, recording and scholarship. Performing organizations and institutions Performing organizations are at the heart of any viable musical culture. In Croatia, Zagreb is the hub for professional music-making. The capital city alone boasts numerous orchestras, an opera company and other musical ensembles. In the orchestral realm, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra is the nation's oldest orchestra, its origins coinciding with the founding of the Zagreb Opera Orchestra in 1870. The orchestra gave programs of excerpts from larger works (Quodlibet concerts) and presented its first formal concert on 8 April 1884. Its reputation grew during the 20th century under a number of distinguished conductors, including the legendary Lovro von Matačić, who led the orchestra during the 1970s. The orchestra's reputation has continued to grow since 1991. It is not an orchestra limited exclusively to Croatian performers and conductors, however; under the Japanese-born Kazushi Ono, who led the orchestra from 1990 to 1996, the orchestra made a successful tour of Japan in 1992.

History Of Contemporary Music Of South Africa
a book by Garth Chilvers and Tom Jasiukowicz,
published by TOGA Publishing in 1994. This book contains 172 pages of South African artist biographies, discographies and photos. It is essential for anyone with even a passing interest in South African music.
This book covers a diversity of artists, from Charles Jacobie to Suck and is a companion book to the 'Best Of SA Pop' series of CDs.
"...a book that anybody with a passing interest in the South African Music Industry will find of invaluable assistance."

Review: A coin collector's saying is "Buy the book before you buy the coin." I bought the book 'The History of Contemporary Music of South Africa' by Garth Chilvers and Tom Jasiukowicz early on in my South African music enthusiasm because I needed to know more and more, even with the Internet. This book has been an invaluable purchase.
Here's what I got from One World for my dollars into 140 Rands: 172 slick pages of information about all kinds of South African bands: rock, pop, township, and more. Also included are two indices: one a list of international musicians mentioned in the book, the other a list of South African musicians and the bands they played with. Scattered throughout are dozens of black and white photos that put faces to the names. It's a nicely-made coffee table-sized book in softcovers.
I tell you what, it's helped me flesh out my I-wish-I-could-hear-that-album list. Fortunately and coincidently, some of that wish list is now coming back into print (éVoid, Via Afrika, Otis Waygood, Hawk, and others). The book still makes me curious about other groups that maybe someday will have their day again (No Friends of Harry, Staccatos, Snakeshed, John E. Sharpe and others).

The first weekend of the Sydney Symphony's Contemporary Music Festival kept one foot firmly in the 20th century. This weekend it strode resolutely into the 21st exploring chamber works composed after 1975 and a string of world premieres. Saturday's chamber music concert allowed the soloists of Sydney Symphony to explore timbre and pitch with far greater sophistication than is possible in a larger ensemble. Liza Lim's 1996 duo, Inguz , delved deep into the sonorities of the cello and clarinet. Toru Takemitsu's Rain Spell , written in 1982, had a wider palette but, like Lim's work, gazed hypnotically into the sound world of micropolyphony. And in Gyorgy Ligeti's Ten Pieces for Wind Quintet , written in 1982, the sostenuto, strident overtones and harmonics spinning out from densely clustered chords could have stripped paint. In spite of some wobbly moments with ensemble, this was the most impressive work in the program, featuring outstanding solo playing which underlined the high calibre of the principal players. To finish, Elizabeth Campbell gave a lively performance of Luciano Berio's

Open Day: 2 3rd September 2005 The Composition and Contemporary Music Faculty has an international reputation centred on intensive projectbased undergraduate (four-year BMus) and postgraduate (two-year MMus) programmes awarded by the University of London. All work is rehearsed and recorded in regular workshops, the foundation of ongoing collaborations with the Academy's instrumental and vocal departments. Numerous opportunities arise for student compositions to be played by ensembles from chamber groups to orchestras, and commissions are offered to write for various events both within and outside the Academy. An annual international composer festival celebrates the work of a prominent living composer, presented in collaboration with the South Bank Centre. Recently featured composers include Berio, Kagel, Kurtág, Maxwell Davies and Pärt. Works by students are performed throughout all the festivals. The Academy's undergraduate composition curriculum was redesigned in 2005 to reflect the broad vistas and challenges faced by today's music creator. It uniquely integrates the traditionally distinct areas of 'media' and 'concert' composition; see
