Container Vegetable Gardening
HYG-1647-00

Introduction
If you have poor garden soil, limited space, not enough sun in the garden area, or impaired mobility, you may want to grow vegetables in containers. Containers allow you to have a movable garden with the opportunity for a limited vegetable supply, or a supplemental source of vegetables that are difficult to locate for purchase. Container gardening also affords better pest management and a chance to have color in areas where you want it. Container vegetable gardening is also a great way to introduce children to gardening. The downside of container gardening is that containers need frequent watering. Since the root system is restricted by the size of the container, some plants may produce smaller fruit, and some vegetables don't grow well in containers. Vegetables that grow well in containers are those with a confined habit of growth, such as salad greens, spinach, eggplant, Swiss chard, beets, radish, carrots, peppers, bush beans, determinate tomatoes, bush varieties of summer squash and cucumbers, green onions, and many herbs. It isn't that other vegetables can't be grown, but that they may not be as suitable for container culture.
Types of Containers
There are two main types of container materials, non-porous and porous. Examples of non-porous containers are glazed pots and those made of plastic, metal, and glass. Clay is the primary type of porous material. Wood and pressed fiber pots are considered semi-porous. When determining the type of container you want to use, consider the frequency of watering required, weight, and cost. Incidentally, decorative pots without drainage holes are unsuitable for container gardening.

Most maritime Northwesterners know that summer doesn't show her shining face until after the 4th of July, and we have the soggy fireworks to prove it! Now we're entering a period of warm, dry weather. What should we be looking for in gardens? Care for container plantings. The baby plants installed on decks and patios in May have matured into billowy masses by now, and are in full bloom. Many can look good right up to frost if they get proper care in July and August. All plants in containers need careful, regular watering in hot weather. The type of plant and the type of container influence how rapidly water is absorbed and how warm the soil gets. If the container is dark green, brown, or black plastic, facing a hot western or southern location, soil can heat up rapidly and roots will be killed by heat. If the plant's in a black nursery pot, waiting to be settled in a permanent place in the garden, be sure to protect the pot from direct sun. Plastic pots come in nearly infinite types, some of them masquerading very nicely as terra cotta. They're affordable, lasting, and effective. Check the bottoms of the pots to be sure drainage works (holes should not be plugged.) Plastic pots retain moisture well, but still need regular watering in hot weather. One plastic type to avoid is the kind with the attached saucers. Container plants mustn't stand in water unless they are specifically water plants such as water lilies. Take off the saucers, even if the tidiness of their appearance appeals!

How to assemble a container water garden. container water gardens are as much alternatives as container flowers are to a fullsize flower bed.
http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/4DMG/Water/contain1.htm
Container Water Gardens By Carl Wilson, Horticulturist, Denver Cooperative Extension Although many people are putting in full-scale pond features, you don't need to do that to enjoy water garden plants. Container water gardens are as much alternatives as container flowers are to a full-size flower bed. The only difference is that you use pond plants in a water growing media as opposed to land plants in potting soil. Even a bowl can hold a small water plant. A nice size container is 12-to-24 inches wide by 12-to-16 inches deep. While you can seal ceramic containers or use liners in wooden barrels, plastic containers may be easiest to use. Just as with container flowers, group various-sized water garden containers to make a big splash. Depending on the size of the container, select a spiky, erect plant, such as sweet flag, Acorus calamus , or yellow flag iris, Iris pseudacorus . Combine with a broad-leaf plant, such as Giant arrowhead, Sagittaria latifolia , or calla lily, Zantedeschia aethiopica . Add a cascading plant, such as water mint, Mentha aquatica , or parrot feather, Myriophyllumaquaticum You will pot your plants in containers filled with a heavy, packed clay and submerge them underwater. Use bricks or an old, terracotta pot to prop them off the bottom so the foliage is above the waterline. Finish off the planting with some floating plants, such as water lettuce

Garden Glossary INTRODUCTION
This glossary has been composed to help both the beginner gardener and those who have been gardening for a while. It's nice to know what everyone's talking about. Gardening : a disease for which there is no cure. Caught by association with other gardeners, reading books, enjoying botanical gardens, watching garden shows or making frequent stops to local nurseries. Also by taking road trips to far away garden spots. No complete treatment, if any at all. Choose the letter of the word you wish to look up:

Creating Container Gardens If you live in the city or an apartment with only a patio or windowsill for gardening, container gardening is a great alternative that allows you to enjoy the beauty of annuals. By being able to move plants indoors when weather is threatening, container gardening allows gardeners to grow plants in climates or seasons that wouldn't sustain the plants otherwise. Ideas for some not-so-common plant containers might be household vessels that have never held soil or vegetation. For example, a weathered wooden bucket or an antique urn that's just sitting around gathering dust can make a great planter that reflects your style. Just make sure it has a drainage hole in the bottom to allow for proper water drainage. Keep in mind the size of your plants and the space they will need for healthy growth. A planter that's too shallow could inhibit root growth. Also remember that the shape of the planter can influence a plant's growth as it develops vertically or horizontally. Hanging containers dress up both indoor and outdoor living areas. Think of them as another place where you can display your eye-grabbing annuals!
