Vegetable Gardening In Containers
Sam Cotner, Extension Horticulturist
If your vegetable gardening is limited by insufficient space or an unsuitable area, consider the possibility of raising fresh, nutritious, homegrown vegetables in containers. A window sill, a patio, a balcony or a doorstep will provide sufficient space for a productive mini-garden. Problems with soil-borne diseases, nematodes or poor soil conditions can be easily overcome by switching to a container garden.
Crop Selection Almost any vegetable that will grow in a typical backyard garden will also do well as a container-grown plant. Vegetables which are ideally suited for growing in containers include tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, green onions, beans, lettuce, squash, radishes and parsley. Pole beans and cucumbers also do well in this type of garden, but they do require considerably more space because of their vining growth habit. Variety selection is of extreme importance. Most varieties that will do well when planted in a yard garden will also do well in containers. Some varieties of selected vegetables which are ideally suited for these mini-gardens are indicated in Table 1.

DO YOU ENJOY FLOWER GARDENING?
Are you trying to create a stunning backyard garden? Searching for distinctive flowers and information on how to grow them in your garden? You'll find plenty of perennial gardening tips,
design ideas and growing information right here. TO GET STARTED ON YOUR FLOWER GARDEN:
  • you need knowledge -
  • and you have to do some spadework.
For the spadework, you're on your own, but I have designed these pages to share insider knowlege about creating a perennial garden. The flower gardening tips you'll find here will help take the guesswork out of planning and planting your garden. MY OWN GARDENING BACKGROUND
I started flower gardening on a small city lot, but I now live on a 10-acre country property, where I enjoy growing many different flowering perennials and dramatic ornamental grasses. As a garden writer, photographer and lecturer, I'm passionate about plants and landscape design. I favor contemporary, easy-care, meadow-like garden styles that work with
nature, rather than fighting it.

Next Want some Free Stuff? - Click Here - Tomato Growing Information for "Succession Intensive Square Foot Gardening" The purpose of this page is to explain my planting practices for container growing. I call it "Succession Intensive Square Foot Gardening" It means planting as much as you can in the smallest of plots. Learn to feed a family from the smallest of gardens. Plants are grown in compost rich soil Plus other amendments and fertilizers. You can use other soils also, which are explained below
But the part of growing tomatoes I like the best is that you can grow other plants with the tomatoes.
Some examples are: onion, carrots, beans, parsley and kale to name a few. Succession:
Planting one after another with the timing being imporant. You can harvest the plants and then add a new crop for the fall. Intensive:
Planting types of plants that have compatably rooting systems. By that I mean if your main crop is tomatoes and you plant them deep you can also plant green onions which have a shallow root system and are harvested right at the time the tomatoes begin to flower. This is when the tomatoes need an extra boost of fertilizer to feed the new fruit and the onions won't be there to suck any of it up..

Welcome! I started organic gardening in the mid-seventies, when French bio-dynamic intensive methods were the fad. Since then I have experimented with numerous gardening methods. For years I grew most of my own food and medicine in a small garden on an organic farm north of Santa Barbara, CA. On this main page, you will find advice on intensive companion beds, growing potato barrels, zuchinni, and garlic; and gardening as part of increasing one's freedom and independence.

Container Gardens
Country Style : Episode COS-209

With a little creative flair, you can put a fun new spin on country-style garden containers. Mary Emmerling shares her creative ideas to give a garden a country twist.
Plant flowers in old chimney pots, which were the decorative ceramic pipes fitted to Victorian chimney stacks.
Tie a wicker basket onto an old tricycle and fill it with flowers.
Set potted flowers in a broken chair seat (above), a rusty metal box or a wire basket lined with moss. Set a pot of ivy in a broken kitchen mixer. Fill a straw basket or upside-down straw hat with potted flowers. A wheelbarrow filled with potted plants can be easily changed to fit the seasonslike tulips in the spring, daisies in the summer and mums in the fall. Larry Bass
Extension Horticultural Specialist

North Carolina State University Many people who live in an apartment, condominium, or mobile home do not grow a vegetable garden because space is not available for a garden plot. Lack of yard space is no excuse for not gardening, since many kinds of vegetables can be readily grown in containers. In addition to providing five hours or more of full sun, attention must be given to choosing the proper container, using a good soil mix, planting and spacing requirements, fertilizing, watering, and variety selection. Containers are available in many different sizes, shapes, and materials. All containers, whether clay, wood, plastic, or ceramic, should have an adequate number of holes in the bottom for proper drainage. Additional holes should be drilled or punched in containers that do not drain quickly after each watering. Drainage is reduced when the container is set on a solid surface such as a cement or patio floor. Raising the container one or two inches off the floor by setting it on blocks of wood will solve this drainage problem. The size of the container will be determined by the vegetable grown. Generally, most vegetables grown in the soil can be grown in containers as long as ample space is provided for root development. Shallow rooted crops like lettuce, peppers, radishes, and herbs need a container at least 6 inches in diameter with an eight inch soil depth. Bushel baskets, half barrels, wooden tubs, or large pressed paper containers are ideal for growing tomatoes, squash, pole beans, and cucumbers.

CONTAINER WATER GARDENING Beth R. Jarvis
Water gardening adds a unique, new group of plants to home landscapes. Many, such as water lilies and water hyacinths, grow well in containers. Containers are an excellent way to sample the joys of water gardening before committing to a larger, permanent pond. Locate your container garden so it can be seen easily from the house or serve as a focal point, drawing visitors into the garden. Consider the following when choosing a site for your water garden: Most water plants require full sun for at least five hours. A spot that is shaded in mid- to late-afternoon is ideal. Three hours of direct light is minimum for water gardening, but it greatly limits both the number of plant choices and flower quantity and quality. Falling tree leaves cause extra maintenance by clogging pumps and harming fish and plants. Keep your water garden away from overhanging tree branches. Easy access to a water supply is important. Water that has evaporated from the container must be replaced to keep the water level constant. Planting the Garden
Any waterproof container that holds at least four gallons of water makes an excellent water garden. Some possible containers include a galvanized horse trough; a large, glazed pottery crock; an old claw-foot bathtub; or a whiskey barrel.

Dwarf or miniature varieties often mature and bear fruit early, but most do not produce as well overall as standard varieties. The amount of sunlight that your container garden spot receives may determine which crops can be grown. Generally, root crops and leaf crops can tolerate partial shade. Vegetables grown for their fruits generally need at least five hours of full, direct sunlight each day, but perform better with eight to 10 hours. Available light can be increased somewhat by providing reflective materials around the plants, such as aluminum foil, white-painted surfaces or marble chips. Container gardening lends itself to attractive plantscaping. A dull patio area can be brightened by the addition of baskets of cascading tomatoes or a colorful herb mix. Planter boxes with trellises can be used to create a cool shady place on an apartment balcony.
