Pot Collection It's fun experimenting with plants in pots and assorted containers. As the seasons change you can be one step ahead, shifting them in and out of garden dead spots. Watering the pots can become an enjoyable summertime experience - though in the hot dry winds they may need it twice a day! Lazy gardeners can keep tender plants in pots and shift them out of the winter frost without having to think too hard. Often they can be deliberately swapped from indoors to outdoors as the seasons allow. Pots make great gifts to friends, too, especially of they're already filled with potting mix and some exciting new plantings. I often start favourite plants off in pots or containers, then transplant them into a new garden space. Many of my flaxes and cordylines now established in real dirt started life in pots on the house decking.

I dislike my big gum tree in February - it sheds leaves and bark all over the house lawn. But I love the collection of foliage plants in pots which form a ring around its base.

Gardening in Containers
Growing in Small and Soilless Spaces
Your students certainly wouldn't be the first to try their hands at confining garden plants. Historically, evidence abounds of plants perched in pots, but perhaps the most famous example is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, built by King Nebuchadnezzar II in the sixth century B.C. near modern-day Baghdad. These immense gardens were not actually hanging, but consisted of a daunting number of container gardens cascading from a terraced hillside.
We're not suggesting anything nearly so elaborate. Even the smallest outdoor nook can sport a thriving crop of vegetables, herbs, and flowers in containers. With some creative thinking and recycled materials from baskets to old shoes, your students can design special theme plantings, entice butterflies and other insect visitors, or create products such as hanging fragrance gardens or "patriotic" baskets to sell or donate.
Unlike conventional gardens where plants are, well, rooted in place, containers offer flexibility; you can move them to meet your students' needs or the plants' needs. And b

Culture Contain your enthusiasm By Alex Markels G reen with tomato envy, Rod Williams stood over a plastic container filled with two tomato plants heavy with red fruit as its owner boasted of his gardening prowess. "He was bragging that he had so many tomatoes he'd been giving them away," recalls the Westminster, Colo., resident, whose backyard plants were far less generous. "It was already August and I only had two measly tomatoes." So last spring, Williams gave up on his conventional garden. Eager to outgrow his friend, he bought five container-gardening kits; each $65 "self-watering" tub has a recessed trough that lets plant roots drink from a reservoir filled from below. He filled the containers with tomatoes, cucumbers, and jalapeño peppers. By July 4, "I was the one showing off," says Williams. This spring he bought one as a Mother's Day gift and two more for himself. Hit the deck. "We're becoming a nation of patio gardeners," says the National Gardening Association's Bruce Butterfield, who notes that the $1.4 billion market for container-gardening products is growing at a 20 percent annual clip, twice as fast as the overall gardening market. On-the-go types love the newfangled, self-watering containers, which only need a drink once or twice a week. For apartment dwellers and older folks with limited mobility, container gardens can grow anywhere there's direct sunan outdoor deck, a patio, even a windowsill. Propped up on a $15 wheeled plant caddy, they can even be moved around to soak up the most light.

Planting a container garden is much like creating a floral arrangement. However, live plants are enjoyed for a whole season. Almost any plant grows in a container when proper conditions are provided and adds a versatile splash of color and art wherever desired. Some other reasons for container gardening are as follows:
  • Your backyard or traditional gardening space is limited or unavailable.
  • Your time for gardening is limited.
  • Your mobility is limited to working in raised beds or containers.
  • Your gardening site is unsuitable for growing desired plants due to soil conditions, unsuitable sun or shade, or other environmental factors.

Eagle Columnist Fall usually is a more desirable climate for flower or vegetable crops in containers. The containers may be located in an area with morning sunlight and afternoon shade, then moved into full sunlight later in the season. If the crops are not mature, containers may be covered or moved for protection from cold temperatures. Container gardening should be much more productive, but it also is more intense. Plants require suitable moisture, air, nutrients, light and temperature. Many species need at least eight hours of sunlight daily. Plants in containers require more water and fertilizer than those in beds or plots. The most efficient containers have a water reservoir in the bottom with an overflow hole, a cover over the potting mix and a wick going into the water. Containers may be placed up on other structures or on brackets or hung from beams for convenience and protection from animals. During early fall in this area, the soil may be considerably hotter than the air. That's when the containers need to be placed on plastic pipes or other material that will not transfer heat into the container.

  • Take care not to place a plant in a container that is too large. If you put it in a pot that is too big, it will spend lots of time filling the pot with roots, and little time growing foliage.
  • A bottle cap placed crimped-edge down makes a good cover for the drainage hole in the bottom of a pot. The cap keeps soil from washing out the hole, yet the crimped cap edge allows just enough room for extra moisture to escape.
  • If a plant is too heavy to move easily, mount it on a platform with wheels or in a child's wagon painted to fit with your decor. Now it can be wheeled to the sink for watering!
  • Soak clay pots in water for 2-3 hours before using them to repot plants. Otherwise, when you water the newly-potted plants, the pots are likely to absorb the water.

Yet in the world of the twenty-first century, where many living spaces lack the space to create such a natural panorama, the popularity of smaller, mobile, and more creative expressions of the love of nature is on the increase. Popularity of Container Gardening Blooms
(ARA) - Container gardening is more popular than ever. According to research conducted by Dynamic Design, the average household today has 4.2 planters. And why not? Ideal for urban or rural lifestyles, container gardening offers more mobility and flexibility than traditional gardening. It can provide year-round satisfaction as well as the opportunity to bring the outdoors inside. Once thought to be the ideal alternative for apartment dwellers and people with small yards, container gardening is today enjoyed by people of all ages, lifestyles and gardening abilities.
Here are a few tips to ensure a successful, satisfying container gardening experience: * Choose the Right Container
Use containers with capacities between 15 and 120 quarts, remembering that small pots restrict the root area and dry out very quickly. Deep rooted vegetables and larger plants require deeper pots to sustain growth.

Container Gardening
Growing flowers, vegetables, and other plants in containers provides many gardening opportunities to people who lack garden space, time or have physical limitations. Anne Streich, Horticulture Educator; Kelly Feehan, Extension Educator; Kim Todd, Extension Landscape Specialist Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Advantages
Container gardening has many advantages. People with physical limitations may appreciate the ability to garden without bending over or kneeling. Container gardens can also bring the garden closer to one's home or outdoor living area, such as along a sidewalk that is accessible from a wheelchair. Container gardens can place culinary herbs close to the kitchen to be snipped and used in cooking. Container gardens on patios or decks give people with limited outdoor space, such as apartment and townhome dwellers, the opportunity to enjoy plants. Potting mixes that are appropriate for use in containers are often lightweight and easy to work. Small containers or those with wheels can be moved with the seasons to place the plants in favorable growing environments. However, wheels will make containers less stable if the gardener leans on them for support. When not in use, containers can be stored out of sight in the garage or basement.
Disadvantages
Nebraska's weather can make container gardening a challenge. Extreme summer heat coupled with high winds can quickly dry the roots of container plants. This can be minimized by carefully selecting plants, growing media, site and watering methods.

Colorful container gardens brighten decks and balconies quickly and easily. "More and more people are gardening in containers because it's not as overwhelming as a big garden," said Mary McLellan, director of curriculum for the online Horticulture Gardening Institute at Michigan State University. "Sometimes it takes really big containers, but you can grow fruit, flowers and even trees in containers." A primary advantage to container gardening is that the potting mix found in most bags of potting soil offers ideal conditions for a plant to grow, she said. With no weeds in the soil, plants are able to take full advantage of nutrients and sunshine. Potting soil also drains well, unlike the sand or clay soil most gardeners must cope with. "You get bigger yields from smaller space because the conditions are right," she said. To start gardening in containers, three things are necessary: a container with drainage, a planting medium such as a soil mixture without weed seeds and diseases, and sunshine. Mary McLellan
director of curriculum for the online Horticulture Gardening Institute at Michigan State University "Some people start container gardening in antique crocks but that's not going to work unless it has drainage," she said. "If you don't want to drill a hole in your container, you need to put the plant into a regular plastic pot and put that into the decorative crock so it's easy to pour excess water out of the crock." Plants sitting in water — even just a saucer of water — are more likely to succumb to disease.

Colorful containers create mini-gardens
by Alison Arnold A certain amount of care and management is required, of course, and to some folks, keeping the container looking fresh and healthy may seem like a lot of work. Others, however, may appreciate the fact that the plants are easily exchanged when they become tired or the season ends. And since container plantings tend to dry out faster than those in garden beds, some adjustments involving both the container and the soil mix will need to be made. Otherwise, when you're going on vacation, simply move the container into the shade and ask a friend or neighbor to help out. My N.C. Arboretum co-workers Clara Curtis (assistant director of design) and June Jolley (greenhouse production manager) are great sources of information on container gardening. Thanks to them and the diligent care provided by our incredibly talented gardeners and volunteers, the arboretum is offering a seasonal landscape exhibit I call "container magic." It amply demonstrates that combining a well-thought-out design, a carefully selected container, the right soil and fertilizer, and a consistent watering-and-grooming regime is the best recipe for a healthy display with a good chance of lasting throughout the growing season. From the designer's point of view, Clara stresses the importance of container placement. You can use them to accent a step, a corner or even place them inside a perennial border. Try grouping various-sized containers within a single setting. And be sure to consider the color, decoration and style of the container, choosing one that's appropriate to the spot and in proportion with its surroundings.
