In a world of limited time and space, container gardening seems to be more and more appropriate. The popularity of container gardening has taken on a life of its own and has almost become an art form. Common plant material can take on an entirely new look when displayed in containers where the plant's unique color, texture or form can be spotlighted. "Instant color" can be introduced by placing containers around the garden. It can change the entire look of a landscape. Unplantable areas and space where there really is no place to garden in the ground, suddenly becomes a colorful oasis. Successful container gardeners know that good looking containers just don't happen. When a few basic principles are applied, even the novice gardener can create and maintain attention-grabbing containers. Ch. 10, pp. 47 - 54
If you don't have space for a vegetable garden, or if your present site is too small, consider raising fresh, nutritious, homegrown vegetables in containers. A window sill, patio, balcony, or doorstep can provide sufficient space for a productive container garden. Problems with soil-borne diseases, nematodes, or poor soil can also be overcome by switching to container gardening. Grow vegetables that take up little space, such as carrots, radishes and lettuce, or crops that bear fruits over a period of time, such as tomatoes and peppers, for best use of space and containers. Dwarf or miniature varieties often mature and bear fruit early, but most do not produce as well overall as standard varieties. With increasing interest in container gardening, plant breeders and seed companies are working on vegetables specifically bred for container culture. These varieties are not necessarily miniature or dwarf and may produce as well as standard types if properly cared for. The amount of sunlight that your container garden spot receives may determine which crops can be grown. Generally, root crops and leaf crops can tolerate partial shade, but vegetables grown for their fruits generally need at least 5 hours of full, direct sunlight each day, and perform better with 8 to 10 hours. Available light can be increased somewhat by providing reflective materials around the plants, e.g., aluminum foil, white-painted surfaces, marble chips.

Everything you need to create a Container Garden

If you live in a place where outdoor gardening space is limited, this is a great opportunity to get creative!
With simple planning, you can create butterfly, herb, vegetable, or annual gardens on a small scale. The principals of color and design that apply to beds can be applied to gardens in containers to maximize your year-round enjoyment. Container gardens can soften hard edges, serve as a transition between interior and exterior spaces, brighten a shady nook, provide drama to an entryway or patio, or simply provide a visual refuge after a busy day. A container can be any type vessel ranging from an antique garland pot to a charming old wheelbarrow. It is important to remember that your container be weatherproof and frost proof for year-round displays. If seasonal plantings are your goal, then frost proof containers are not a must. Adequate drainage is crucial for any container. Make sure your container is large enough to accommodate the developing root system. There are many new, pre-packaged soils to choose from at Pike Family Nurseries. Check with a Certified Plant Professional for a recommendation on which fills your need. Avoid letting the roots of your plants dry out in the hot summer months; even in winter watering is important. The following are great tips for container gardening. Happy Gardening!

Tips for Successful Container Gardening Smelling pretty
Many annuals give off a scent. So, why just go for visual pleasure in container gardens when you can add some wonderful fragrances to your home. Try dianthus, sweet alyssum, candytuft, petunia, heliotrope, or sweet pea. To get the most enjoyment from these and other fragrant plants, position them where your nose will find them: on a deck in containers; close to a window; and on the edges of your garden, patio, pathway or porch. Bugaboos
If bad bugs are a problem (unlike lady bugs or other good bugs who feed on the bad ones) here's a simple organic potion to keep them away. In a blender mix 4 cloves of garlic with 1 chopped onion. Place this mixture in a large glass jar and add 2 cups of water. Add 2 teaspoons of bottled hot pepper sauce, stir ingredients together and steep for 2 days. Strain the mixture and add one tablespoon mild liquid dish detergent. Then dilute with 5 cups of water. Using a mister, spray plants once a week and watch the bugs retreat. Container Gardening for Wildlife
Provide food for pollinators in small spaces.
by Marlene Haas Container gardening is ideal for the urban naturalist trying to maximize blooms per square inch, but is also a welcome addition to a larger yard. Following a few simple guidelines will result in healthy plants cascading over pots and enticing wildlife to visit. First one must find the appropriate home for a floral occupant. When choosing a container, keep in mind what plant you want to grow in it. The size and shape of the root system and the growth rate are factors determining how big and deep of a pot you want. Large pots stay moist longer, are less subject to temperature fluctuations, and allow for more root growth and multiple plant displays. Hanging pots are the most susceptible to drying out. Pots can be made out of a number of materials. Depending on your taste and setting, you might try clay, terra-cotta, cast concrete or wood. Wood can be pressure-treated and painted, just do not use creosote, which is toxic to plants. Line pressure-treated wood with plastic if using the pot for edibles. Be creative and recycle a wooden barrel or watering can. If you’re not familiar with your locally native plants, you can experiment with them in containers before setting them loose in your yard. In many cases, local natives will be hardier than non-native plants. Locally native flowering plants will attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Non-hardy plants will need to have winter protection or be moved to a sheltered location. If plants are combined in one pot, just be sure that their growing conditions and growth forms are compatible.

http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/ggk/container.htm
If you have a small area or don't have the capacity to grow a large garden, consider container gardening. Gardening in containers can be just as rewarding as having a full size garden. Many plants grow in pots just as well as they do in the ground. There are a few things to consider when planning for a container garden if you wish to be successful. The first is to consider the plants. If you are planting more than one plant in the same pot, which many do for an attractive interesting container garden, be sure that all your plants meet the same requirements. Requirements to consider are amount of light, amount of water and fertilizer scheduling. Also be sure that the size of the container matches the size of your plant. Some other things you might consider when planning your container garden are such things as height, color, and texture. Variations of these elements will make you container gardens more attractive and very interesting to look at. When watering your container gardens, the best time to do so is in the morning. Watering in the morning allows your leaves and soil to dry out, preventing diseases and viruses. You should water your plant accordingly. You should check to see if your plants need watering before adding more. Overwatering is the most common reason for container plants dying. If you push your finger into the soil, this should give you an idea of how moist or dry the soil is. Do not watering the plant if the soil is already moist.

CONTAINER GARDENING: LOW SPACE? NO PROBLEM
Enhance your patio, garden, or apartment with these great ideas
If you have little or no space for a traditional garden, then container gardening is your best bet. Container gardens can also be a charming way to embellish your patio, entryway or deck. Although container gardens generally require more watering and feeding, they are quite easy to maintain and care for. Container gardens are also a great solution if you are considering an herb garden (link to herb gardening article) as they can be placed conveniently near the kitchen door or in a kitchen window box. Choosing your Container:
Containers are not limited to terra cotta pots and formal urns. Use your imagination! Pick a style that suits the surroundings, but that also suits the plant or plants you wish to grow in it. Consider the style and color palette you are working with. Cobalt blue containers may be a great way to tone down hot color plants, but they may not suit a mediterranean-style garden (terra cotta would be more appropriate). With the increasing range of colors and styles of containers available today, sizable, stylish (and affordable!) containers are easy to find, so make the containers part of the grand scheme instead of just a place to plant.

Decorating Basics Home Furnishings Color in Your Decor Bathroom Decor Floor Decor ... Home Normally by late autumn to early winter I'm not thinking much about gardening. The flower beds are put to rest and I start thinking about the holidays and holiday decorating. This year, however, I am going to add a little color to my front porch and try my hand at winter container gardening. First you need to choose a container. Rustic wooden boxes, half barrels, oil drums, and ceramic or clay pots make great gardening containers. Depending on the extremity of your winter weather, keep in mind that some ceramic and clay pots may crack in the cold. Concrete and stone containers are the most weatherproof. Next choose some plants that look good together. Winter pansies, trailing ivy, small evergreens, herbs, ornamental cabbages, flowering kale, primroses, dwarf deciduous hollies, and variegated yucca are all attractive winter plants that work well together. Try to pick some short, some tall, and maybe a trailing ivy for variation.
