Yevgheniy Zamyatin Blogroll ScrappleFace Powered by Movable Type 2.63 September 19, 2005 North Korea Vows to Give Up Nukes, Lying by Scott Ott (2005-09-19) China announced today that six-nation talks had succeeded in securing a pledge from North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program and its pathological dishonesty in exchange for security, cash and power. In an 11th-hour breakthrough North Korea reaffirmed some of the promises it made during the administration of U.S. President Bill Clinton, which it immediately violated, adding however that "this time we really, really mean it." White House spokesman Scott McClellan hailed the new compact, that includes a commitment from North Korea to accept international nuclear inspectors, similar to those it kicked out in 2002, and to adhere to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty which it had previously pretended to do since 1994. "Winning these commitments from North Korea is part of President Bush's overall effort to restore the Clinton-era atmosphere of trust on the Korean peninsula," said Mr. McClellan. "For our part, we'll continue to prop up Kim Jong-Il's decadent, oppressive dictatorship in exchange for his commitment to remain in power thanks to the legitimacy that this deal gives him."

The Polarization of American Political Parties and Mistrust of Government David C. King Table Of Contents Introduction
One lesson that Democratic and Republican party leaders claim to have learned in the mid-1990s is that there are great political rewards for being "centrists." While extremists may be praised within wings of their own parties, they do less well in general elections and find it more difficult to build bipartisan coalitions in Congress and the White House. Following acrimony in the 104th Congress (1995-1997), President Clinton predictably called for a new era of bipartisanship. "Today," said the president in December 1996, "the clamor of political conflict has subsided. A new landscape is taking shape. The answer is clear: the center can hold, the center has held and the American peopleare demanding that it continue to do so." Republican leaders on Capitol Hill quickly agreed. Anthony Downs, the progenitor of median voter theories in economics and political science, could not have scripted a finer exchange.

Conservative government would scrap Kyoto: Harper
Last Updated Wed, 09 Jun 2004 21:34:23 EDT CBC News BARRIE, ONT. - Conservative Leader Stephen Harper reaffirmed a past pledge Wednesday that his government would scrap the Kyoto protocol on climate change and invest the money into other initiatives. By supporting the accord, the Liberals are throwing billions of dollars at another boondoggle, said Harper. "After seven years we have a federal government that still can't tell us how it will implement this accord. I don't believe it can implement it. I don't believe it can achieve the targets. I think we need a more balanced approach to cleaning up our atmosphere, "said Harper. Harper said the "science is still evolving" and that there may be better ways to clean the air besides cutting greenhouse gas. He added that the accord won't be implemented because many other countries have refused to endorse it. "Kyoto is never going to be passed and I think we'd be better to spend our time on realistic pollution control measures," Harper said in Barrie Ont. Dr. Ken Green, an environmental scientist with the Fraser Institute sides with Harper saying more research needs to be done on global warming.

Opposition to the central government in Mexico unified the political leadership of the state, but did not create the pronounced differences that shaped the first party system in the post-independence United States. However, the range of social and political influences that shaped the subsequent party system (as well as the state's political culture) emerged during the pre-party system, setting the state for more than a century of politics.
